Nursing is a profession that requires a unique skill set. A few of the traits include compassion, understanding and empathy. Clayton State University has a goal to produce competent, compassionate, professional nurses with communication and technical skills. Clayton State’s School of Nursing has outlined nine program outcomes or concepts that are part of the Conceptual Curriculum Model. These concepts include caring, communication, critical thinking, human diversity, informatics, interdisciplinary collaboration, nursing therapeutics, professional development, and theory based practice. These program outcomes relate to three nurse and client transitions; health-illness transitions, developmental transitions and organizational transitions. In health care, it is necessary to be knowledgeable and advanced in many areas in order to provide efficient care; these concepts are the foundation for a healthy nurse and client relationship.
Transition is the process of changing from one state to another. Transition is the core of discipline in nursing ( Schumacher & Meleis, 1994, p.120). One particular transition listed in the Conceptual Curriculum Model is Health-Illness. Health can subjectively be defined as a state of optimal well being while illness can be defined as a sickness having a negative affect on the body. Two of the four aims of nursing are to promote health and prevent illness. In order to be successful in meeting these aims, a nurse will use knowledge, skills and critical thinking. Sufficient knowledge, skills and critical thinking capabilities are developed through experience and practice. Registered nurses become leaders through professional development. Nurses holding Bachelor Degrees will eventually become placed in leadership roles. We must evaluate the program outcomes now in order to be successful when it is time for us to fulfill these roles. I often refer to the quote that Doctor Tanner provided that states, “Nurses have the power to make decisions to determine how patients are born, live, suffer and die”. Some components of holistic nursing are knowledge of growth and adaptation (Murphy, 1990, p.1). Nursing is holistic in nature and nurses may not realize how much power they truly possess.
Florida Career College focuses a great deal on Dr. Jean Watson's theory of caring as it pertains to nursing, as written in their statement, "The College That Cares". Jean Watson has worked on perfecting what she believed was a useful, effective method and thought process to nursing; this pertains to Florida Career College's nursing program because a main goal of the college is to produce students who understand and appreciate how much caring, respect and understanding is in life and moreover in nursing. Personally as a Florida Career College student I strive to reinforce Dr. Jean Watson's theory of caring into my future career as a nurse.
The nursing key challenges chosen for this essay include professionalism, preparation, personal factors, competency factors, patient-centered care and job satisfaction. These nursing challenges will be thoroughly discussed and supported by current evidence-based research and nursing literature. Transition is defined as a process or period of change from one state or condition to another (Oxford, 2016). In relation to nursing students, it is also defined as students transitioning from one program to another (Oxford, 2016). It is important that students have the ability to be competent in a clinical setting.
Extensive use of the word transition in nursing literature signals that it is a significant concept (Ralik, Visentin, Van Loon, 2006). It is essential for nurses to possess knowledge and understanding of transition. The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive examination and explore the definitions and key elements of the concept of transition and show how gaining knowledge of transition can positively impact client care and the nursing profession. Understanding transition will help improve client care by teaching nurses how to assess for, and facilitate transition and develop health promotion initiatives. Ultimately, the goal is to have better outcomes for clients going through transition. Continued research and education benefits the nursing profession because gaining knowledge and a better understanding of transition helps guide the underlying standards that help nurses remain current and consistent in their delivery of care.
In healthcare it is very important to have strong leaders, especially in the nursing profession. A nurse leader typically uses several styles of leadership depending on the situation presented; this is known as situational leadership. It is important that the professional nurse choose the right style of leadership for any given situation to ensure their employees are performing at their highest potential. Depending on which leadership style a nurse leader uses, it can affect staff retention and the morale of the employees as well as nurse job satisfaction (Azaare & Gross, 2011.) “Nursing leaders have the responsibility to create and maintain a work environment which not only promotes positive patient outcomes but also positively influences teams and individual nurses” (Malloy & Penprase, 2010.) Let’s explore two different leadership styles and discuss how they can enhance or diminish the nursing process.
Throughout this philosophy paper, I have explored what nursing is based on my personal values and beliefs as it relates to the body of work in nursing. I value the importance of holistic nursing and the care of patients being individualized for them and their family. Also, effectively collaborating among health care professionals to ensure quality care for patients. Additionally, the importance of health promotion as one of the main roles of nurses is being a teacher, since promoting health prevents illness and increases the level of health in clients. These principles will serve as a guide for my personal standards of nursing practice.

Leadership is defined by Northouse (2013) as a transactional experience between persons whereby one individual influences a group of individuals who have a mutual goal. Leaders may hold authority attributed to them by the group, substantiated by how they are regarded, whether or not they have positional authority. In contrast to management, where the goal is to provide order through control, leadership is concerned with producing change through transformation and practical adjustments (Northouse, 2013). Because of the nature of nursing, its obligation to promoting health and healing of people, nursing leadership concentrates change efforts based on human needs and concurrently ponders the needs of administrations largely because they understand the interrelatedness of the two influences.

They confirmed six crucial aspects of nursing as the following: patient centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence based practice, quality improvement, safety, and informatics (Cronenwett et al., 2007). The authors of QSEN outlined how a nurse, or nursing student, should be able to implement these competencies through their “knowledge, skills, and attitudes,” referred to as KSAs. In order for nursing students and new nurse graduates to develop the KSAs required to provide excellent overall patient care, they must learn how to accomplish them. Quality improvement, in particular, as defined within QSEN guidelines, can be taught in nursing programs via academic practice partnerships. According to the American Nurses Association, nursing is defined as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations” (American Nurses Association, 2016). Nursing is a multidisciplinary career that encompasses many different aspects into one to be able to provide the best care possible for all patients. Nurses are caregivers, counselors, advisors, teachers, and more, but to be able to do the job of a nurse one must put into perspective the person or patient, the environment, health, and the nurse. These four concepts together create the Nursing Metaparadigm. These concepts directly influence how a nurse will perform care to a patient and the type of nursing practice that will be demonstrated by that nurse. According to our reading, Transitions are triggered by turning point events and for people with chronic illness, these can be predictable or unpredictable, cyclical and potentially recurring throughout life and result in the persons redeveloping their ways of living with illness (Kralik, Paterson, & Coates, 2010). Transitions of care refer to the movement of patients between health care practitioners, settings, and home as their condition and care needs change. For example, a patient might receive care from a primary care physician or specialist in an outpatient setting, then transition to a hospital physician and nursing team during an inpatient admission before moving on to yet another care team at a skilled nursing facility.
Nurse leaders should ensure that nurses are trained to understand the complete person, interested in discovering the whole experience of each individual patient, and skilled at eliciting information from each patient so that both the nurse and patient learn about the patient’s whole life experience. Using Newman’s theory, the nurse can help patients to understand their own realities better and find the “choice point” that allows the patient to decide to live a healthier life. For this modern era, the advanced practice in nursing is moving towards the vision of the DNP, very important to restrain the transitional leadership inheriting the courage and vision of our past leaders. Nurse educators must assume leadership roles in various levels of institutional governance and work collaboratively with another faculty to create a dynamic educational climate that demonstrates significant student learning outcomes and is responsive to the ever-changing regulatory higher education environment (Patterson & Krouse, 2015). Towards that I am leading as leader “transformational.” Lastly, I believe now that in this time that we are experiencing a crisis in the health system it is time to position myself as a leader that transforms and evaluates the health system where I can position myself as being an agent of change based on the health of the population. In today’s society, leadership is a common yet useful trait used in every aspect of life and how we use this trait depends on our role. What defines leadership is when someone has the capability to lead an organization or a group of people. There are many examples that display a great sense of leadership such being an educator in health, a parent to their child, or even a nurse. In the medical field, leadership is highly used among nurses, doctors, nurse managers, director of nursing, and even the vice president of patient care services. Among the many positions in the nursing field, one who is a nurse manager shows great leadership. The reason why nurse manager plays an important role in patient care is because it is known to be the most difficult position. As a nurse manager, one must deal with many patient care issues, relationships with medical staff, staff concerns, supplies, as well as maintaining work-life balance. Also, a nurse manager represents leadership by being accountable for the many responsibilities he or she holds. Furthermore, this position is a collaborative yet vital role because they provide the connection between nursing staff and higher level superiors, as well as giving direction and organization to accomplish tasks and goals. In addition, nurse managers provide nurse-patient ratios and the amount of workload nursing staff has. It is their responsibility to make sure that nursing staff is productive and well balanced between their work and personal lives.
