Design my own dream city 1. Introduction The notion of sustainable city has mounted a paramount place in the contemporary urban planning. In the world Conservation strategies in1980, the concept of sustainable development was firstly introduced. In the following part, the essay is divided into three major parts of the sustainable ways in different aspects. Firstly, I will give you a brief insight in urban planning. Secondly, transportation policy and planning will be discussed. At last, I may analyze the design in sustainable housing. The highlights of these three aspects would build a better understanding in the possible effects of sustainable development and arouse public awareness on the natural environment. Before discuss how the sustainable development can be made, the definition should be emphasized first. 1.1 Definition of sustainable development ‘Development that meets the needs of the present with the ability for the future generation to meet their own needs.’ (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987) Sustainable development requires three key components: economy, society and environment, sustainable development can be success through striking balance in those factors. These three components are indispensible, they compel to depend on each other. On the other words, we can only gain a decent and energetic environment and society if the economy is strong with a healthy a stable growth rate. Figure 1 The relationship between environment, society and economy Source: http://www.susdev.gov.hk/html/en/sd/index.htm There are different approaches in sustainable development. Beside, carry capacity contains the ability for the area to provide our basic needs such as clothing, food, medical care in order to offer a decent and reasonable life quality. Therefore, government should cooperate with the developers to renew some used land in order to supply more public housings, which can let more needy to live in the area to meet the overpopulation problems without harming the precious environment. Taking Tak Long Estate as an example, its area is about 300 hectares with the capacity of 90000, which can settle more than 10% of total population in Hong Kong. It illustrates that the government may use reasonable size with well planning to develop large capacity to meet housing problems without cutting green belts area.
9. Smith’s report defines sustainable development as, “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". Smith’s definition is important to consider, because it illustrates that that we do not have to destroy the natural environment to have economic progress.

Sustainability is a concept with a diverse array of meanings and definitions – a widely used glamorous, ambiguous, ambivalent and vague concept that is used by different stakeholder groups in various ways. Presumably to avoid noodling over a terminology or to avoid the confrontation with a definition, most widely the concept is broken down a planning process (c.f. e.g. Döring & Muraca, 2010). That is why most common sustainability is understood as sustainable development.1
In a world where over half of the human population calls a city their home, the need to restructure and revolutionize the way we design our urban environments has never been greater. Currently, the notion that these vast metropolises of metal, concrete, and sludge could one day be fully realized pillars of sustainability is certainly laughable. However, when these same cities are constantly growing and multiplying across the globe, all the while using a greater and greater chunk of our planet’s energy, this impossible task becomes a necessary focus. To strive towards the closed, continuous loop of “true” sustainability could greatly alter the image of the modern city. Any improvement over the current state of urban affairs could carry weight, and even if that goal is not entirely fulfilled, the gained benefits would be immense.
I consider it’s not very appropriate to say “sustainable X” because these “X”s are only sub-systems which exchange energy and materials within a larger overall system. Only a single small system reaching the “equivalence of sustainability” (if this ever exists) doesn’t mean the whole system is sustainable. That is to say, the hierarchy and complexity of systematical thinking must be taken into consideration of the definition of “sustainable city”. We should evaluate the city-system in its ecosystem and context. Sustainable is used to describe the overall complex system in which there are sub-systems exchanging energy and
With the development of urbanization, an increasing number of social problems have emerged. These problems will decelerate the urban development, however, there are many ways in which sustainable development can reduce the impact of these urbanization problems. “Sustainable development seeks to improve the quality of human life without undermining the quality of our natural environment” (Adams, W.M. 1999). Actually, sustainable development can partly solve the urbanization problems, for it can reduce the impact of the problems such as traffic jam, housing shortage and severe pollution, but it is difficult to completely solve these problems in a short time.
Sustainable development has been defined as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. In 1987, the term ‘sustainability’ was expanded to ‘sustainable development’ at the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) of the United Nations which is also known as the Brundtland Commission. According to it, sustainable development is the process which keep in concern the needs of current and future generations. In this process the allocation of capital investments, misuse or exploitation of natural resources, technological development and organizational change are in consonance with each other. The stated definition of WCED specify the conflux of three pillars of sustainable development– economic, environmental and social sustainability. The aim of sustainable development is to use renewable resources as much as possible and to reduce or recycle non-renewable resources in order to prevent environmental degradation (Hall et al.,2010; Shepherd & Patzel,2010). Elkington (1997) proposes a framework known as triple-bottom-line (TBL) to encapsulate the fusion of sustainable development into business activities. Elkington emphasizes that the triple-bottom-line of sustainability focus on economic development, environmental problem and social
“Sustainable Development: At its heart, sustainable development is the simple idea of ensuring a good quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come. It is about living within the carrying capacity of the environment so that how we live, work and enjoy leisure activities, which do not harm or put undue pressures on the environment. It is about ensuring everyone has the opportunity to have a decent education, a quality environment that they take pride in, good health and a decent job (n.p, 2014)”
According to the International Institute for Sustainable Development, sustainable development is defined as development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. If we follow this definition, it becomes easy to see that the vast majority of the “developed” world has not, and is not developing sustainably. The idea of sustainable development requires us to consider how our action of developing will affect other countries, and future generations. Many people believe in “the butterfly effect”, where the flapping of a butterfly’s wings in one part of t...
The city I propose as a perfect city, would be as close to an ecocity as possible, although have some differences. For example, for electrical needs, I would suggest the city have a solar power plant, but on those desperate times, energy would be bought from other electrical plants from nearby towns or states.
Cities all over the world are developing. As war ended in 1942, a significant number of people move to the city because they want to improve life. This urbanization process is causing a number of problems and should be met by sustainable development policies. In the beginning, it is important to know the definition of sustainable development. There are some definitions for sustainable development, but simply they say that sustainable development is a development which using resources now and preserving them for future generations (Adams, 1999, p.137). This concept has been agreed internationally at a Rio Conference in 1992 to be implemented by all government policies which mostly known as “Agenda 21” principles (Adams, 1999, p.141). This paper will show that traffic jams and housing problems caused by urbanization can be met by sustainable development policies. The structure of this paper will first explain the situation that leads to traffic jams and housing problems. Next, it will elaborate the sustainable development solutions, implications for the solutions, and evaluations how effective the sustainable development solutions solved the problems.
The first is to encourage economic growth and sustainable development. It emphasizes the need for economic growth, the need to improve the level of contemporary human welfare through economic growth, enhance national strength and social wealth. However, sustainable development should not only pay attention to the amount of economic growth, but also to the pursuit of quality of economic growth. That is economic development, including growth in the number and quality improvement in two parts. Growth in the number is limited, and rely on scientific and technological progress and improving the effectiveness of economic activity and quality, adopt a scientific mode of economic growth is sustainable. Flag of sustainable development is the sustainable use of resources and good ecological environment. Economic and social development can not exceed the carrying capacity of resources and the
Also, the book is well designed and easy to read which makes me feel comfortable during reading this book. The editors also included core findings, new methods, and international experience in order to help us to explain more deeply about the challenges we faced in the advancement of Sustainable Urban Development, in which this might be one of the strengths of this book. Therefore, I believed it would be worthy for us to spend our time on reading this book.
In class we discussed what sustainable development meant to us; each group had its own definition. Our group’s definition was that sustainable development is for the long term for future generations, for the basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, and job. The basic will increase over time and our resources will diminish, which why sustainable development is important. Sustainable development is important for future generations so that they end up with a world better than ours. Sustainable development is achievable if society works together to meet everyone’s basic needs and create a better world.
My dream place would be a house on a Galapagos Island. My land will be located on the Isabella Island. It will be nice and relaxing because it has a constant weather all that time, perfect environment. Also I will have a nice 2 floor cabin. The cabins will look like the ones that you see in forest. My whole family will live there after I am 75. But before that I will spend my time gathering all the money to buy a piece of land, a plane, a boat, and some vegetable seed (lot of them). I want my dream place to be nice and relaxing where you can enjoy the environment and very peaceful weather.
