INTRODUCTION Nowadays, economy is growing rapidly, this is a result of the world focusing on economic growth more than other sectors. Finally, such overwhelming development on economy has become a crisis to the world. Like global warming, which is an example that reveals the importance of other developing sectors, such as social and environmental perspective. In other words, the better way to run the world is to attain the sustainable development. This book, ‘Institutional and Social Innovation for Sustainable Urban Development’, which is edited by Harald A. Mieg and Klaus Töpfer, brings out the message of the importance of social innovation to the advancement of sustainable urban development, which is one of the perspective that we neglected for long and it is one of the essential element in attaining the sustainable development. In this book, the editor gave a considerable amount of examples and findings to help us in understanding more deeply about the topic. For example, one of the chapters in the book discussed about urban ‘ climate-change experiments’, which integrated findings from a survey of 100 cities and expanded on the UK experiences. HOW SOCIAL INNOVATIONS HELPS SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT Social innovations, in my own understanding, they are new concepts, ideas, strategies, organizations or even enterprises that meet social needs of all kinds, from education and working conditions to community development and health that strengthen and extend the society. Social processes of innovation are included in social innovation, in which they have a social purpose in helping the needs of the community. While in this book, it investigates the recent social innovations for sustainable urban development, such as smart growth ... ... middle of paper ... ...from it, not only the theoretical knowledge about social and institution innovation for sustainable urban development, such as the planning and the built environment, institutional economics, and sustainable development, but also the ethical and moral values that we should have in life, such as how those institute and company made contributions to the society. Personally, I think this book is quite interesting Also, the book is well designed and easy to read which makes me feel comfortable during reading this book. The editors also included core findings, new methods, and international experience in order to help us to explain more deeply about the challenges we faced in the advancement of Sustainable Urban Development, in which this might be one of the strengths of this book. Therefore, I believed it would be worthy for us to spend our time on reading this book.
Finally in 1991, the federal government initiated a ‘Better Cities Program’ which aimed to make Australian cities sustainable and more liveable. It encoura...
Drawing on your knowledge of social innovation and organizational form, compare and contrast two organizational forms (e.g association and social movement; company limited by guarantee and coop; hybrid and some ‘pure’ form. Critically evaluate them with regard to their enabling or constraining impact on social innovation. Draw liberally on the relevant literature and illustrate with examples.
...nefits that SEs offer because the sector still lacks sufficient government and public awareness and support. The OSICP and SIF establish a framework for federal involvement in the social innovation process; however, they are merely a launching point for continued discussion. Countries like the UK provide an example of the positive impact that government support for SE can have in building the necessary bridges between business, nonprofits, and the government. As the government gains a better understanding of the capabilities and challenges associated with social innovation, it will be better positioned to establish the institutional structures and environmental conditions for SE to flourish. When supported appropriately, SEs can provide a self-sustaining, inclusive opportunity to strengthen the national economy while simultaneously serving a social need.
In this regard, city authorities all over the world are increasingly adopting energy efficiency measures in a quest to become sustainable into the future. Consequently, this has led to the emergence of the term ‘green cities’ (Aulisi & Hanson, 2004). New York City, viewed by many as an urban, concrete jungle, was recently named the “greenest city" in the United States. This is mainly because most of its residents live in energy-efficient buildings, and use public transport, bicycl...
As previously implied, cities are currently the antithesis of even the barest sense of sustainability. To succinctly define the term “sustainability” would be to say that it represents living within one’s needs. When it comes to the city, with almost zero local sources of food or goods, one’s means is pushed and twisted to include resources originating far beyond the boundaries of the urban landscape. Those within cities paradoxically have both minimal and vast options when it comes to continuing their existence, yet this blurred reality is entirely reliant on the resources that a city can pull in with its constantly active economy.
Understanding all of the steps involved with innovation is essential for an organization to be successful. There are many aspects involved in managing technological innovation. While a technological innovation can help the organization be successful, it is important to consider social responsibility as well. Social responsibility has becoming an increasing more important as society evolves and moves forward. Organizations that desire long term success understand the importance of social responsibility and how it can affect their organization in a positive way, if executed
With the development of urbanization, an increasing number of social problems have emerged. These problems will decelerate the urban development, however, there are many ways in which sustainable development can reduce the impact of these urbanization problems. “Sustainable development seeks to improve the quality of human life without undermining the quality of our natural environment” (Adams, W.M. 1999). Actually, sustainable development can partly solve the urbanization problems, for it can reduce the impact of the problems such as traffic jam, housing shortage and severe pollution, but it is difficult to completely solve these problems in a short time.
“Sustainable Development: At its heart, sustainable development is the simple idea of ensuring a good quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come. It is about living within the carrying capacity of the environment so that how we live, work and enjoy leisure activities, which do not harm or put undue pressures on the environment. It is about ensuring everyone has the opportunity to have a decent education, a quality environment that they take pride in, good health and a decent job (n.p, 2014)”
Social sustainability is “identifying and managing business impact, both positive and negative, on people.” The quality of a company’s relationships and engagement will directly or indirectly “affect what happens to employees, workers in the value chain, customers and local communities” (Wynhoven). This definition focuses on the importance of sustainable relationships. It focuses on the social aspect, which can be good helping to determine what social sustainability looks like. The UN definition makes it clear that it is important to manage the corporation’s impact proactively so that employees, customers, and local communities all benefit from a corporation’s presence. BMW is an excellent example of a corporation that focuses on social sustainability. BMW promotes exchange between refugees, local youth, and BMW employees through a neighborhood project called “Lifetalk” which aims “to give young people a better idea of possible career paths” (BMW). These actions come from the company’s beliefs and goals. BMW states that “taking social and environmental responsibility for everything we do is an integral part of how we perceive ourselves as a company. We are convinced that the lasting economic success of any enterprise these days is based increasingly on acting responsibly and ensuring social acceptance” (BMW). BMW believes that sustainability is an
According to the International Institute for Sustainable Development, sustainable development is defined as development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. If we follow this definition, it becomes easy to see that the vast majority of the “developed” world has not, and is not developing sustainably. The idea of sustainable development requires us to consider how our action of developing will affect other countries, and future generations. Many people believe in “the butterfly effect”, where the flapping of a butterfly’s wings in one part of t...
Cities all over the world are developing. As war ended in 1942, a significant number of people move to the city because they want to improve life. This urbanization process is causing a number of problems and should be met by sustainable development policies. In the beginning, it is important to know the definition of sustainable development. There are some definitions for sustainable development, but simply they say that sustainable development is a development which using resources now and preserving them for future generations (Adams, 1999, p.137). This concept has been agreed internationally at a Rio Conference in 1992 to be implemented by all government policies which mostly known as “Agenda 21” principles (Adams, 1999, p.141). This paper will show that traffic jams and housing problems caused by urbanization can be met by sustainable development policies. The structure of this paper will first explain the situation that leads to traffic jams and housing problems. Next, it will elaborate the sustainable development solutions, implications for the solutions, and evaluations how effective the sustainable development solutions solved the problems.
The first is to encourage economic growth and sustainable development. It emphasizes the need for economic growth, the need to improve the level of contemporary human welfare through economic growth, enhance national strength and social wealth. However, sustainable development should not only pay attention to the amount of economic growth, but also to the pursuit of quality of economic growth. That is economic development, including growth in the number and quality improvement in two parts. Growth in the number is limited, and rely on scientific and technological progress and improving the effectiveness of economic activity and quality, adopt a scientific mode of economic growth is sustainable. Flag of sustainable development is the sustainable use of resources and good ecological environment. Economic and social development can not exceed the carrying capacity of resources and the

In the following part, the essay is divided into three major parts of the sustainable ways in different aspects. Firstly, I will give you a brief insight in urban planning. Secondly, transportation policy and planning will be discussed. At last, I may analyze the design in sustainable housing. The highlights of these three aspects would build a better understanding in the possible effects of sustainable development and arouse public awareness on the natural environment. Before discuss how the sustainable development can be made, the definition should be emphasized first.
Climate Change and Sustainable Development This research paper is about climate change with the concept of sustainable development, meaning that it will approach the climate change problem in an economical way and try to solve it with the new growth theory. New growth theory argues that innovations, population growth, new technology, and creative destruction are connected to each other and that these connections will solve the climate change problem. The exponential technology growth, improved international private rights and improved use of human capital are some of those key terms that the theory is all about. The most important thing towards the solution is human capital.
