Motivation plays a vast role in each and every one of our lives. It is the intrinsic or external drive that causes us to get up and move to accomplish our ultimate goals. There are many factors that help shape our motivation and drives. Researchers like Alfred Adler have analyzed the effect of a person’s birth order on their personality. Upon personally taking the birth order personality inventory, my score indicated that my psychological birth order was being the first-born, which is in fact true. According to Adler, the first- born is typically directive, goal-oriented, and high achieving due to very high expectations from parents. This can completely be applied to my life. Since I was enrolled in grade school, my parents have pushed me to strive and be successful in school. They have always had high expectation for me and I have always felt obligated to fulfill their expectations. One of my major motivations to get good grades and be good in school was making my parents proud and not letting them down. Another aspects that can shape personality according to Adler, is having an abundant amount of responsibility that comes with being the first-born. In my life, I can also relate to this aspect. My parents held strong their high expectations because they expected me to set good examples for my younger siblings. The idea of my sibling looking up to my every move became engraved in me. At times it did feel overwhelming and stressful to think if I feel into bad influences, so would my brothers. This served for me as a major motivator to stay above the influence and try my best in everything I do at all times. I personally like to have control over my own decisions in my life. I would not like to be pushed around and be told would to do. It would be nice to have control over what I decide to do and I am motivated to achieve this control. In order to get goals accomplished we need a push of motivation to help us get off our feet and slap the laziness away. As for my life, I am motivated to achieve and obtain power over my actions and my life. I am further filled with external and intrinsic motivation to be successful and make someone of myself, and lastly my personality has been shaped due to my birth order and as a result has led to my high levels of motivation. We are always searching for other people’s approval and acceptance. Being the middle child in my family has always felt like a competition for the attention of our parents. I lived fairly close to my elementary school growing up. I remember that every day on the walk there my mom would give me kind of a pep talk, “don’t talk to strangers” “make sure to eat and drinks lots of water” and before I left, she’d give me a blessing (she’s very religious) and the last thing she would say was “you better get straight A’s”. She used it metaphorically; meaning just the best you can be at everything you do and literally as in getting straight A’s. Being in elementary school, I didn’t get letter grades, but instead a numerical system where fours represented A’s. It was a routine that I’m very grateful I grew up with the competitive mentality, but it caused a rivalry against my brother. The moment I’d get home, I would excitedly tell my mom how my reading skills improved or a “cool” drawing I did in class. Later, my brother would come home bragging how he got an A on his history test or how he joined the soccer team. Seeing how he got more attention that day I’d strive to be superior the next day and even more involved growing up. Although personality is affected by many different factors, such as heredity, family size, the spacing and the gender of other siblings, education and upbringing, birth order plays a very important role and gives many clues as to why people are the was they are. But they want to be noticed and praised by their parents when they do well. This too however develops them to become leaders, especially if they have siblings their parents want them to set an example for (Brooks 1984). Independence, reliability, and respect for authority are other traits that this group may has. They are highly intelligent and get high qualifications in school. Decisions about how much to produce, how much to work and the quality of workmanship (job-performance decisions) are solely depend on the individual’s level of motivation. In another words, as it stated in the text, “the expectancy model holds that work motivation is determined by individual beliefs regarding effort-performance relationships and the desirability of various work outcomes associated with different performance levels…Unless an individual believes that effort lead to some desired performance level, he or she will not make much of an effort. ” (Hellriegel, Slocum, Woodman, 2001, p.147) In relation to Barlow, he could not find a reason to be motivated at the TA. First, through his past performance evaluation, he had been rated a score of three consecutively for the past four years. The scores were a punishment itself because he had no way to determine his performance. Regardless Barlow performed well or not, the same score will be given; this caused Barlow to become careless about his job because he saw no reward in his effort; no reason be to motivated.
