"The desire to seek out instant and “magical” solutions - which, in one swift stroke, will solve all health problems and ensure ongoing well being seems to be part of the human condition" (Williams, 1996, p.180.) One of these magical solutions that have been used for hundreds of years is ginseng. Ginseng is believed to prevent disease, inhibit aging and stimulate the nervous system.
It is believed that ginseng can improve general health, and actually restrain or repressing a disease. To begin with, ginseng is deemed to boost overall immunity. "Studies suggest that members of the ginseng family may even be able to stimulate the body to produce more interferon, the antiviral protective protein" (Fulder, 1996, p.61). Research studies conducted indicate that ginseng enhanced the blood whereby the manufacturing of white blood cells and antibodies in the red bone marrow increases, thus boosting our immune system ( Fulder, 1996). Second, ginseng is considered to have certain beneficial effects on cancer patients. "The one important potential use of ginseng in cancer is for support during treatment, which is stressful, debilitating, and damaging to immunity" (Fulder, 1996, p.62). Ginseng will not prevent cancer, but it can help prevent the increased risk of secondary growths. Finally, ginseng helps stabilize metabolism disorders. People with diabetes (which is an impaired metabolism of sugar) take ginseng to help their bodies become accustomed to the insulin treatments. Also, when the metabolic rate is to slow, ginseng assists the metabolism by increasing the breakdown of foods, thus creating more energy and explusion of waste products. Fulder explains that "improved stamina and alertness equals resistance to stress" (p.52). The nervos system is one of the most important, and ginseng enhances it by acting as a balanced remedy increasing efficiency of the cerebral cortex and helping individuals to be more alert.
Over the years, ginseng has been credited with the ability to combat and prevent disease, improve the quality and length of the aging process, and improve the efficiency of the nervous system. Although ginseng has been used for hundreds of years. In Asia, it is only now gaining popularity in the Western world. Could this be the miracle, magical solution that humanity is looking for to cure all ailments?
