They will buy pricey visits with specialists, when after visiting ten doctors the problem just keeps coming back, if it even ever went away at all. There has to be a simpler way. Something that doesn't come with a large price tag and doesn't have side effects; it fixes the illness and doesn't just mask the symptoms. Alternative medicine is becoming more and more popular because it attempts to find the underlying cause of the patient’s condition rather than focusing solely on symptomatic treatment. With many conditions there are simple, natural, and effective cures that could be considered next time as an alternative to traditional medicine or used with traditional medicine to reach optimal health. Homeopathy was founded in the late 1700s in Germany and has been widely practiced throughout Europe. Homeopathy is a medical philosophy and practice based on the idea that the body has the ability to heal itself. It is based on the idea that "like cures like." That is, if a substance causes a symptom in a healthy person, giving the person a very small amount of the same substance may cure the illness. In theory, a homeopathic dose enhances the body's normal healing and self-regulatory processes. Homeopathic medicine views symptoms of illness as normal responses of the body as it attempts to regain health (Web M.... ... middle of paper ... ...lternative Remedies 4 References Holistic Medicine: What It Is, Treatments, Philosophy, and More. Homeopathy medicine is a self-healing alternative medicine developed in 1790 by German physician and chemist Samuel Hahnemann. Homeopathy medicine aims to treat the whole body and not just the symptoms. Homeopathy medicine was very popular throughout the united states during the early 1900 but began to die out after the civil war. Homeopathy is basically giving an unhealthy person a small dose of medicine, that if it was given to a healthy person in a larger dose it would produce symptoms of the disease the unhealthy person has (Billitterl 37). Naturopathy is promoting health instead of trying to destroy the disease itself. Naturopathic professionals usually recommend: herbal remedies, homeopathy, acupuncture and a few other CAM techniques (Billitterl 39).
Medicinal plants have been used extensively as sources for numerous active constituents for treating human diseases and for its therapeutic value (Nostro et al., 2000). The use of plants in treating ailments has been known for thousands of years through the empirical knowledge gathered about the usefulness and harmful properties of different plants and by intuition. Many of these indigenous plants are used as food plants, added to food meant for pregnant women and nursing mothers for medicinal purposes (Edeoga, 2005). Hence it is very important to scientifically understand the chemical composition and bioactive constituent and the biological activity of the different plant part with regards to their usage in both orthodox and primary health care.
