Is Suicide the Solution?
Throughout time, death has been viewed in a negative light. In general, it is an event to be mourned and is seen by some as the end to existence. People do not usually seek death as an answer to their problems. In various pieces of literature, however, suicide is contemplated by the characters as the only solution to the pain and grief that they experience.
The National Library of Medicine’s website states that most people who commit suicide do so because they are “trying to get away from a life situation that seems impossible to deal with” (“Suicide”). This idea is prevalent in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The main characters, Romeo and Juliet, fall deeply in love at their first meeting. Unfortunately, it is not meant to be, due to the fact that they are from feuding families. They disregard the feud, however, and secretly marry just two days after meeting one another. After the wedding, Romeo runs into Juliet’s cousin Tybalt, who hates him. They engage in a duel and Romeo kills Tybalt. He flees the scene of the crime. Later, he discovers from Friar Lawrence that rather than executing him for murder, the Prince of Verona has declared that he be banished forever. Instead of being relieved and grateful, Romeo laments his fate and claims that he would rather be dead than be separated from his dear Juliet. “There is no world without Verona walls but purgatory, torture, and hell itself” (3.3.17-18).
The two lovers spend their wedding night together. The next day, Romeo leaves for Mantua to begin his banishment. Juliet discovers that her father has arranged a marriage for her and the ceremony will take place in three days. She runs to Friar Lawrence for help. She is desperate to find any wa...

This is explored through the characters of both lovers, Romeo and Juliet. Near the end of the play, Juliet drinks a potion to make her appear dead to her parents and get her out of an unwanted arranged marriage to a man named Paris. Once her parents would find her dead and place in a tomb with her ancestors, her other lover, Romeo, would get her and they would elope together. However because of miscommunication, Romeo was not aware of this plan and he heard that Juliet had died from someone else. Because of this he goes to see her and decides to kill himself, but after seeing her “dead” body for closure. When Romeo thinks Juliet is dead, he immediately resorts to suicide without once thinking about any other possibilities or considering a life without her. This quick conclusion leads to the unnecessary death of Paris, who also came to meet Juliet, and Romeo, himself, which then leads to Juliet killing herself. Before Romeo drinks poison and commits suicide, he says “Here’s to my love! (drinks the poison) O true apothecary,Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die.” This rash and hasty decision, had it been put off for a minute or so would have resulted in Juliet awakening and the couple living together, which was their goal. Night by Elie Wiesel is an autobiographical novel recording Mr. Wiesel’s experiences during the World War II holocaust. As a 15 year old boy Elie was torn from his home and placed in a concentration camp. He and his father were separated from his mother and his sisters. It is believed that they were put to death in the fiery pits of Auschwitz. The entire story is one of calm historical significance while there is a slight separation between the emotional trauma of what are occurring, and the often-detached voice of the author.

There are various reasons as to why one might commit suicide. With regards to Sophocles’ play, Oedipus The King, Jocasta is a primary example of why one might commit suicide. Have you ever known someone who’s committed or tried to commit suicide and thought, “I wish I would’ve done something, said something, to stop it from happening?” I know I would ask myself that question everyday if I hadn’t. A few years ago, a good friend of mine thought her life was so bad she wanted to end it. I did the only thing I could think, and told the nearest teacher. It may sound so childish or stupid, but it worked. Luckily, she’s still alive and well. I’m here to make sure you can make the difference and help a person who might be, or is suicidal. Just think of what would happen if you didn’t try to help.
The number of deaths per year is approximately 55.3 million. About 42,000 of those 55.3 million deaths are suicides, but what reasons do people feel suicide is the only answer? Romeo Montague, in Romeo and Juliet, kills himself because he can not live without Juliet. Knowing each other for about three hours, they decided it was necessary to get married. They had to find a place where someone would allow them marriage. Friar Laurence was a pastor to Romeo and Juliet, so the two of them agreed Friar Laurence would be the one to marry them. Committing suicide probably sounds like a foreign idea to most people, but to the people who think about it, they deal with it every day. More importantly, the question is what leads people to kill themselves? In general, most people do not want to actually kill themselves, even though many people joke about it on a daily basis. Being a human, we all have a certain amount of will to live. Depression is the major cause for suicidal thoughts and ideas. After a long enough period of time, people become worn down and become less and less happy.
Teenagers all around the world are having millions of suicidal thought running through their minds. Even if they have a happy childhood when they grow up and become adolescents, they can become suicidal.(Berman , 2006). There are several different factors that contribute to make a teenager think suicide is the only solution. Depression, bullying, lack of parent's attention are just some of many causes that lead to a teenager's suicide. In the United States suicide is the third cause of death in teenagers between 15-24 years old (Gould, 2004). Studies have shown that having a gun in the house is a big contributor to suicide. Many other causes can involve psychological issues like depression, a bipolar disorder, alcohol & drug abuse, feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness, lack of support (parents, friends, neighbors, teachers, etc.) Suicide also changes between boys and girls. Suicidal thought are more common in girls but the methods they use are less effective like medicine abuse or cutting themselves, unlike boys that use more powerful and efficient methods like guns, hanging themselves or jumping from a high spot(Achilles, 2004). Whether you think a person is happy or not we still have to look out for suicidal signs or weird behavior that shows they are having suicidal thoughts (Beautrais, 2008). It's not hard to know if someone wants to commit suicide and here I will mention some of the main clues to know if someone wants to commit suicide, preventions and treatments.
