I am Yasir Zaidan Abdu, I am applying for the MPP program in HKS this year. My plans are confined in the field of Nation’s strategic planning. Especially, In Sudan, my country, people have suffered many complex problems since the declaration of its independence. Moreover, occupying the third place among the most corrupted countries in the world¹, poor practicing of democracy, 46.5% of population are poor ², civil wars (Southern Sudan and Darfur) and lack of security are the main challenges of Sudan. After a profound analysis of the situation in Sudan I came to a conclusion that there is no clear vision for the state, and the awareness for strategic planning is low among our current government leaders. In fact, the limited vision of our current leaders was the main reason behind the disastrous separation of the southern part of Sudan. Consequently, the agreement was very ambiguous about the situation of the contact areas with Southern Sudan, which lead to a civil war in that areas (South Kordofan state and Blue Nile state).
Moreover, in my third year of engineering college I started to rethink my future career, and about exactly what I wanted to be. With this concern I had a chance to get into the Leaders Training Academy in Turkey. This academy is concerned about training the potential leaders in Arabic countries. One of the courses I took there was about planning for your life and how to discover yourself. I took many career and personality tests such as DISC test, but the results did not favor Engineering.
Afterwards, I realized that my interest, personal readiness and skills are concerned with public activities, which provide public contact as in management, economics and public services. Consequently, I decided to change my...

...g expenses, fellowships and scholarships give us a great opportunity to overcome our financial constraints. With all my intentions and obligation to be a part of positive change in Sudan that can decrease the poverty rate and develop the country politically and economically, I applied to Scott and Isabelle Black Fellowship to give me the opportunity to seize the required knowledge and skills for such a huge change.
I believe that life is fair and financial constraints will never be an obstacle for those who are faithful, visionary and hard-working. Also, Great people usually overcome their obstacles and difficulties in order to achieve miracles. Thus, I am starting the journey of miracles; the miracles which will not be feasible without your fellowship support.

Last summer I volunteered at a local hospital for a total of 136 hours. At the end of the summer I received an honorable mention award for being a dedicated volunteer who is highly respected around the hospital. Furthermore, I've been a committed volunteer during this school year. I have also been an active member of my school's HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) chapter; this March I will be competing in a medical terminology competition against members of other HOSA chapters across the state. Additionally, I am a devoted member of my school's academic decathlon team. Finally, I have been a member of CSF (California Scholarship Federation) for the past two years.
The AMGEN Summer Scholars research experience will contribute to my plans to become a M.D./Ph.D. candidate, and ultimately an Oncologist, by helping me develop critical and independent thinking as well as creative skills as they relate to the field of medicine. It will also help me develop a more thorough understanding of biological concepts, how they directly apply to medical treatment, and the ways in which biotechnology fuses multiple fields of science to create technologies to care for others. The opportunity to assist in creation of the technologies that will be used on my future patients will ultimately improve my ability to treat their illnesses in adaptive ways. The opportunity I would have to read, interpret, and be a part of creating
I’m so happy to be given the opportunity to join National Junior Honor Society(NJHS). I would love to be a member. I think it is important for kids to be involved in the community. Also, myself personally it would be an honor to be a face for our school.
As a student that is currently seeking a career in the medical professions, I have had to routinely contemplate my reasons for pursuing such an extensive education program in a field that is constantly demanding excessive time and effort. I know of students—many friends and acquaintances of mine included—that have the most sure-fire, inspirational stories that align with their desire to become doctors, surgeons, physician assistants, etc. They always seemed to have a story that emphasized their desire to “give back” what they have received from the medical community. Because of that, ever since the beginning of high school, I have been trying to find an extraordinary reason, a purpose for my medical pursuits. Perhaps I could justify my passion for
As a student at Northvale Public School, I have grown up with my older siblings being inducted into an organization called the National Junior Honor Society. I had seen all the hard work and dedication they put into their school work and activities just to get into this society, making me want to be just like them. Then a few weeks ago, I found a note on my desk in homeroom telling me that I had been nominated to be apart of this society. Through citizenship and character, leadership, and service, I intend on being inducted into the society I have heard so much about. Though it will take a lot of effort this school year, being a part of this society is a dream of mine that I will make sure to come true.
Scholarship, leadership, character, and service are four attributes that define an excellent student. Being in high school, it’s difficult at times to be a leader, show your character, and be involved with voluntary services while being focused on scholarship, but I have managed to do all four numerous times. I am so grateful and excited to have the chance to be a part of the National Honors Society.
Throughout high school I have dreamed of having the opportunity to attend Indiana University. I have a true passion for babies. I love to learn how babies are developed and how they become such an amazing part of the world. Therefore, I would like to apply to Indiana University and pursue a degree in Pediatric Nursing. I would love to be able to deliver babies and deliver new life into this earth. There are several opportunities available for me to get involved with new leadership opportunities. I want to be able to be a leader for all age groups.
Another experience that helped me explore my intended major was completing the MBTI, which helped me determine my personality type, ENFJ. This personality test reassured my preference to extroversion, intuition, feelings, and judging; meaning I am a sociable enthusiastic, idealist harmonizer, who is warm, optimistic, and imaginative. As an engineer, I would have to be able to
I have thus far endured through having a severe eye condition, not being able to have the kind of financial support I need from my family and being limited from getting a support from the US government because I am not a citizen or legal resident. But, I have also made both social contributions and academical achievements that have brought purpose to the cause of the hardships in my life. And after being though it all and coming out with a more precise strive for a better future, I face, yet again another hindrance to my plan to study Biochemistry and influence as many lives as I can in a positive way. And, since I need a support in order to reach my goal, that is why I need the Esperanza Scholarship.
Becoming an intrical part of the National Junior Honor Society would be a great privilege. NJHS established in 1929. From its conception, it has validated five guiding principles, which are; enthusiasm for scholarship, desire to render service, leadership, responsible citizenship, and development of character. Thus, I would not only like to join for the academic recognition, but to further develop and challenge myself within these areas. For many years, NJHS has paved a road to success for many alumni. Hopefully soon, I will be counted amongst them.
The earliest glimpse of my future was at an elementary career day years ago. When I filled out what I was going to dress up as I wrote the word, “farmacist.” My mom was a pharmacist and I looked up to her and wanted to be just like her! So when career day rolled around I dressed in a white coat carrying a big bottle full of M&M’s to dispense to my classmates. Now so many years later here I am actually about to take on graduate school and follow in my mother’s footsteps to become a pharmacist. Of course my career path has been less than a straight line from “farmasist” to pharmacist. My passion and talent for math and science in high school allowed me to seriously consider a career in engineering. However, the more I considered engineering, the more there seemed to be something missing. As much as I loved solving problems I did not see
As someone who has always admired the prestige and character of the National Honor Society, I am honored to have received a nomination. I view the National Honor Society as a very noble organization comprised of hard working, intelligent people committed to giving back to the communities that have helped them realize and reach their potential. I believe that both the program and I would benefit by the contribution of my skills, values, and leadership.
Congratulations, this award has been presented to oneself for running around the field, and doing nothing to help the team! Many children play sports because of the exhilaration and trepidation they get(acquired?) when participating. But whether or not they play club or recreational depends on the mindset. In club sports, children play to win, not for a participation award.
In the future I would like to see myself, as a continuously promoted public official who could possibly become a pro-active politician in today’s demanding political arena. To achieve this, I would like to gain more knowledge which can help me reach intellectual maturity to the latest practices adopted in the field of Public Administration. My desire for self-development in this area and curiosity to learn past and contemporary developments in different societies will help me to solve the problems easily.
I have known for a long time that I would love to have a career in public service; thus, I pursued my bachelor’s degree in the department of Public Administration at Selcuk University, Turkey. In Turkey, enrollment to the university is based on one’s performance in central examination. Fortunately, my score in that exam allowed me to study in one of the best universities, Selcuk University. After four years of my undergraduate, I applied and was awarded to Ministry of National Education’s scholarship, which sponsors my master and doctorate degree abroad.
