Intercultural Ethic Issues:
"Intercultural Ethics" is with no doubt a very important issue that it's importance is growing rapidly considering today's societies around the world. Where companies operate in different countries, stakeholders live even in different societies and let’s not forget people's immigration in search of new job or experience a new life. In contrast with it's highlighted role in today's world, it is still considered as a minority project from a very few scholars. Sadly, it is not even accepted topic in the worldly academic area. Having said that, Intercultural Ethics is undeniably known as one of the main keys for a democratic citizenship and social involvement in multicultural societies. If we really want to get a better understanding of it, several scientists and thinkers should work together in an international project but it is also helpful if we take a look at the basic meaning of ethic. Probably it is better if we first get familiar with it's concept through Kont's theory.
Basically he did not believe in anything as a good thing. He just used the term good to describe the good will and by that he meant the resolve to act purely according to one's duty. He believed in God and other life cause he said otherwise morality does not make any sense. He said since we can act morally, so we must be free but it was just his presumption and he could not prove that we are free. As I mentioned in the beginning of this essay, Ethics can guide us to make the right choice and decide correctly in every given situation. Not to mention that this becomes even more important in Healthcare system settings and among the healthcare providers cause they are responsible for giving the best health care possible to the patients. For such an important duty not only they need to respect the other people’s rights as humans despite their differences, but also they need to communicate well with their coworkers and ignore each other differences and overcome to the language barrier.
Throughout this paper I will examine three different ethical views and interpret the ways in which one would respond to the scenario at hand. The initial ethical view is composed of cultural relativism. Another view is Kantian ethics. The final view involves utilitarianism. When presenting these views, I will describe each ethical view, and also I will speak abouts how a person who abides by the given ethical view would respond to the situation.
Ethics is an important proponent when considering any decision. Knowing the difference between right and wrong is something everyone should know. However, the importance of ethics gets minimized when a decision that seems wrong actually has benefits. In the efforts of improving society, often ethics is violated. Sometimes in order for society to be better off as a whole, there has to be little sacrificing of ethical practices along the way to do so.
In “Common Sense” he wrote many quotes exemplifying these ideas; “the simple voice of nature and of reason will say, it is right” and “male and female are the distinctions of nature, good and bad the distinctions of heaven” (Common Sense). These two quotes show that there are good and bad, but what people make of themselves and what they feel is good or bad and the decisions they make, make them. It is also directed, according to the code of ethics, that Healthcare executives have a fiduciary responsibility to the society and community and should act in such a way that wins their trust, confidence, and respect. Hence, it is needed that the healthcare professionals lead exemplary lives. By acting their role, they are said to be moral advocates. Every decision taken by these professionals leads to an impact on the well-being of the people; therefore, decisions should be balanced and ethical.They should safeguard the interests of every audience that they serve.
In today’s society, it is very important for the healthcare professional to be educated about the culture of their patients. It can be seen that the number of patients who are Muslim are increasing throughout the healthcare system. It is challenging for healthcare workers to care for the needs of Muslim patients when they don’t understand their cultural beliefs. Muslims don’t necessarily have the same health beliefs, outcomes, or priorities that their providers have, therefore making it more difficult to come to a final healthcare decision (Al-Oraibi, 2009.) “This intercultural gap in understanding between clients and providers may result in poor care services and low levels of satisfaction” (Al-Oraibi, 2009.) Muslims are not being properly accommodated in healthcare settings because of a lack of education from healthcare workers about the Muslim culture and religion.
Advocating for diverse patients is important. In this paper I will be discuss a personal ethical dilemma in which I have encountered. I will give an objective interpretation of both my side as well as my patient’s side of the dilemma. Then I will describe the conflicting values and beliefs that I and the patient had. Then I will give the information I was lacking concerning the patient’s culture. Lastly, I will define culturally congruent care.
The ethical situation in question is a culmination of intolerance, ignorance, cultural insensitivity, and failure to follow hospital protocols and procedures. The location of the facility in which the ethical dilemma took place is a small, rural hospital in the Midwest of the United States of America. A new male patient has been admitted and he is currently a practicing Muslim. The facility does not have a large Muslim population and does not have any cultural protocols in place to accommodate the Muslim religion.
In this diverse society we are confronted everyday with so many ethical choices in provision of healthcare for individuals. It becomes very difficult to find a guideline that would include a border perspective which might include individual’s beliefs and preference across the world. Due to these controversies, the four principles in biomedical ethic which includes autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and justice help us understand and explain which medical practices are ethical and acceptable. These principles are not only used to protect the rights of a patient but also the physician from being violated.

The values enable me to associate well with my family, colleagues, friends, and the society.
