Who was the most infamous serial killer in American history? The most logical answer is the Zodiac Killer, based out of northern California. He was active from the mid 1960s to the early 70s terrorizing young couples. His publicity comes from the many letters and cyphers he sent into different newspapers in that area. In the letters, he would brag about the killings and taunt the L.A. Police Department. By the end of the letters in 1976, he had claimed to have killed 37 people, but the police were only able to confirm 5 murders. The first two victims in the winter of 1968, David Arthur Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen in the Lake Herman Road Murders. The second victims, Michael Renault Mageau and Darlene Elizabeth Ferrin, in the Blue Rock Springs …show more content…
Arthur also had a basement that was searched, but nothing was found. The many sightings the Zodiacs face that match up with Arthur is baffling how they have never arrested him. On top of them looking the same, all of the people that heard his voice said that they sounded the same as well. Although this presents one theory, other theories about the identity of the Zodiac Killer exist. Some may argue that the Zodiac Killer could have been multiple people instead of it being Aruther Leigh Allan. Many believe that the Zodiac Killer was actually multiple people doing the murders, but only one letter writer taking credit for others' dirty work. There is no way that it could have been multiple people because of how similar the first three murders are. All of the murders were in, or near cars, and the first three all took place at popular lovers lanes where he targeted young couples. Similar weapons are also there, where in all of the murders except the stabbing, the same.22 caliber gun was used. You can also connect the Lake Berryessa stabbing back to him due to the handwriting on the side of the car matching the handwriting in the

A serial killer is defined as a person who murders three or more people. This is usually in service of abnormal psychological gratification. The Zodiac Killer may be one of the most well-known serial killers in the United States, partly because of the unusual events surrounding the investigation. This serial killer is famous for many reasons. These include his the murders he committed, the killer’s relationship with the media, and the still mysterious unsolved case.
The Zodiac Killer in my opinion is one of the most mysterious killers that I can think of, and from a historic aspect is my favorite due to the killer never being caught. One reason that makes the killer mysterious to myself is their sudden stoppage of killing people, and the stoppage of taunting law enforcement by using the local media., and like previous stating their never being caught, charged with the offenses, and being found guilty. This means given the period the murder could have been anyone and possibly still be alive today for example someone like your next-door neighbor and even possibly a U.S. Senator. One of the main things this killer is known for were his cryptic messages
A serial killer is defined as “a person who commits a series of murders, often with no apparent motive and typically following a characteristic, predictable behavior pattern” (Dictionary.com). This definition perfectly describes the Zodiac killer who wreaked havoc on Northern California for years. The killers identity has never been revealed, but some have their suspicions on who this mysterious killer could be. Some of the most popular suspects include Arthur Leigh Allen, Earl Van Best Jr., and Lawrence Kane “Kaye”. He named himself through his letters to the police and most of his letters included his signature which was a circle with a line through it.
The Zodiac killer was a serial killer who operated in San Francisco from 1960s to 1970s. The Zodiac killer got this name following a series of letters that contained ciphers that he supposedly sent to the press. The zodiac killer is said to have murdered five known victims between 1968 and 1969 but investigations have never substantially connected the murders. However, there were other murders that the Zodiac killer was tied to even though there was inconclusive evidence to confirm these claims. The last Zodiac murder was reported in 1974 after which the serial killings were never reported again. However, the zodiac killer was never caught and the police closed investigations in 2004.
The unknown origins of the first serial killer dates back to thousands and thousands of years of civilizations and knowing the act which started it is not a recent development and has grown deeper and perplexing in present-day society. Examples being news outlets who question and try to humanize these so-called monsters. The people grew fascinated by these psychopaths and human cursoity wanted to know more. Two influential serial killers who happened to be living in the same period (19th century). First being Jack the Ripper who terrorized England predominately targets prostitutes and remaining unidentified. Second being H.H. Holmes a doctor who had a facility informally remarked “The Murder Castle” proclaimed 27 murders however 200 victims
H.H. Holmes said, “ I was born with the devil in me. I could not help the fact that I was a murderer, no more than the poet can help the inspiration to sing. I was born with the evil one standing as my sponsor beside the bed where I was ushered into the world, and he has been there ever since.” Serial killers became a recent epidemic in the 1970’s. There were a lot of famous killers at the time like the Manson family, the Zodiac Killer, John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, David Berkowitz, Hillside Strangler, and Jim Jones.
The FBI defines a serial killer has someone who has killed a minimum of three people with a cooling off period in-between each of the killings. What would drive someone to kill three or more people? A lot of it has to with their childhood, but there is not really a definitive answer. With that being said doctors, investigators, and others agree that serial killers are made because of their childhood. It stems from the unconscious mind, which is able to control behavior. Most serial killers had an abusive childhood that showed the child that they have no other value other than being a sex object or someone to hurt. This fear will build up the child’s mind and they start to fantasize about being all powerful and controlling. They aren’t shown how to love or care for others making them be a sociopath because they lack the ability to empathize.
Serial killers have always been around, but no name was given to those people who committed such awful crimes until the 1970’s. They tortured and raped innocent people for centuries, without anyone even knowing their reasoning. Overtime, as psychology became a growing subject of interest, people started to get a concept as to why they killed so ferociously. In the 1970’s , the term “serial killer” was made to classify these people, to help give an understanding to their motives, and to help show why they have no remorse for the awful things they do to innocent people.
Repetitious murderers alongside mass murderers have always existed as human monsters that instill fear in the lives of people, however it was not until the mid to late 20th century that we came to know these monsters as ‘serial killers,’ and begin to understand these crimes did not have such easy to understand motives. In James Alan Fox and Jack Levin’s Extreme Killing: Understanding Serial and Mass murder their research shows an exponential growth of a few criminals who would now be classified as a serial killer pre 1960 vs the American peak in the 1980s with hundreds of these serial murderers. The term serial killer itself is universally known to have been coined by FBI agent, Robert K Ressler in 1974 and it supported by Peter Vronsky’s
Envision a mental picture of a serial killer, what image comes to mind? Presumably one of a relatively young, fairly attractive, and intelligent middle-class white man. Why is this? It is not plausible that every serial killer fits this category, so why do a majority of American citizens immediately picture serial killers as all displaying these characteristics? By the conclusion of this paper, I wish to identify some key disparities between differing groups of serial killers. Is there a certain quality that drastically separates ethnic serial killers from the rest, or a specific trait that differentiates female serial killers from the males? I believe there is an entire spectrum of these murderers who are both alike and unique from one another
Monsters are creatures or people that applies fear into their own lives to scare those that are around them. Villains in comic books or movies are considered monsters but have no true fear for the readers since they are fake, and can only bring us entertainment or the sense of being afraid. Serial killers are the monsters of the real world and should be feared the most. Serial killers bring true fear into people’s lives. The Zodiac uses this knowledge of fear and implements it into his own style of killing mass amounts of people, and not be caught. The Zodiac Killer’s intelligence is used to evade the police, with the murders many people of all statuses, age, and gender, by letters filled with his own language and a hidden message that slowly
No one knows who one of the world’s most notorious serial killer is. While his identity remains unsolved to this day, there are many theories as to who it is.
