Serial killers have always been around, but no name was given to those people who committed such awful crimes until the 1970’s. They tortured and raped innocent people for centuries, without anyone even knowing their reasoning. Overtime, as psychology became a growing subject of interest, people started to get a concept as to why they killed so ferociously. In the 1970’s , the term “serial killer” was made to classify these people, to help give an understanding to their motives, and to help show why they have no remorse for the awful things they do to innocent people. In history there was not a term for serial killers up until the 1970’s. The FBI first ever made term was not even “serial killer”, it was “sequence killer”. The FBI had made that term after they started the Behavioral Science Unit. This unit was started by FBi agents John Douglas and Robert Ressler. These two came up with the term “sequence killer” because they did not stop killing after one victim they killed multiple. After creating the term for the killers, guidelines had to be made. This way there would be a difference between serial killers, mass killers, spree killers. Serial killers have distinct characteristics, they kill at least three to five victims and they are in no rush to find their victims. Their target of interest are women and what they do to them is torture and rape , and ultimately kill the victim at the end of it all. Other killers like spree killers, also kill at least three to five victims but they only space a couple days in between and do not favor any gender over the other. Mass killers kill two to three people within a matter of hours and tend to not care if their life is
