Yoga can be a significant part of a sexual assault victim's recovery process. This is what a college student realized.
NBC News reported the case of Zabie Yamasaki, a woman assaulted in her senior year in college. Yamasaki used yoga as a supplement to her professional treatment but go so much more from it that she initially thought she would get.
She soon discovered that yoga was not introducing some great mind-body health benefits, she was also started to heal faster from her ordeal. Most sexually-assaulted victims become detached from their bodies but with yoga, Yamasaki started to to reconnect with her physical self. She is now recommending the exercise to other sexual assault victims.

According to the authors of “Enhancing Care and Advocacy for Sexual Assault Survivors on Canadian Campuses”, “Sexual assault has immediate and long-term health consequences for victims including suicide, HIV infection, depression, and social isolation,” (Quinlan, Clarke, and Miller). Another common side effect these victims face is post-traumatic stress disorder. Someone experiencing PTSD may have random outburst of anger, have trouble concentrating on day to day tasks, or may even have flashbacks of their attack. These consequences make it hard for victims to get back into the normal routine of everyday life (“Effects of Sexual Assault”). In a case at Amherst College a young women named Angie Epifano faced many of these consequences after she was raped by an acquaintance in one of the college’s dormitories. While immediately choosing to ignore what had happened to her Epifano soon became an emotional wreck. Before the attack Epifano had believed herself to be an extremely strong and independent individual. Sexual violence is a pressing social problem with victims of sexual assault having to cope with physical and psychological consequences (Welch & Mason, 2007). Contrary to common beliefs, perpetrators of sexual assault are rarely strangers, but whom the victims know and trust (Eichenberg, Becker-Fischer, & Fischer, 2010; Mason & Lodrick, 2013). It is crucial to note that for sexual assault to occur, it does not necessarily involve violent force (Mason & Lodrick, 2013). Findings also suggest that sex offenders are more likely to target individuals with mental health problems (Campbell, Keegan, Cybulska, & Forster, 2007; Creighton & Jones, 2012). Creighton and Jones (2012) described these individuals as vulnerable, that is due to individual variables such as their psychological well-being interacting with the environment, they are more susceptible to harm, in this case becoming targets to sexual assault. Unfortunately, there is dearth in research concerning preventive interventions specified to mitigate this vulnerability in individuals with mental health problems. To establish the pertinence of this issue, this essay will review research that demonstrate the link between mental health problems and vulnerability to sexual assault, as well as discuss possible preventive interventions for psychologists to integrate into practice to mitigate this vulnerability.

This week’s analysis is associated with the yoga class provided online to help with stress reduction. The first term that I came across was psychophysiology and how this principle is based on the mind and body being one and how our thinking affects all physiology. This principle was the perfect definition of yoga because yoga focuses on how the mind and body connects with each other. It gives you a sense of relaxation throughout your mind and body together. Furthermore, the yoga that was in the video was a yoga style called hatha. Which practices asana (yoga postures) and pranayama (breathing exercises). According to the book, this practices helps bring peace to the mind and body and prepare our body to do deeper exercises. The art of breathing was mentioned during the exercise and in the book. Breathing is very important when trying to unite the mind, body, and spirit. So, having slow, deep breathes was a main focused during the exercise. Another term that was used in the video was the art of stretching, which allows us to become aware of our flexibility of our muscle while moving. Lastly, the art of balance is significant because it allows us to move into the next form of position on both sides of our body. Through the practice of yoga, I have begun to learn many things about myself that I did not know before. These new findings are due to the implementation of the practice of yama and niyama into my everyday life. Yama means restraint or behavior to avoid. While, niyama means observance or conduct to cultivate. Yama principles focuses on a person’s interactions with the world while niyama is more of a self observation and how to deal with ourselves. I find that these ten commandments of yoga have caused me to examine myself and the world around me in a way that isn’t negative but of understanding. I think that as humans we tend to fear the unknown but the unknown is only unknown until we actively engage in finding the truth. Thus, we can go on in life being afraid of the things that we don’t know about ourselves and the world around us or we can enthusiastically search for the truth.
The goal of this study was to identify the ways in which engaging in yoga practices would alter psychological well being, and allow people to engage more fully in their lives and flourish in health and happiness. The pre and post test set up of this study allowed the researchers to see the ways in which students had been affected by their participation in the yoga teacher training.
