In the UN conference on women, Hillary Clinton said, “If women are free from violence, their families will flourish. If women have a chance to work and earn as full and equal partners in society, their families will flourish. And when families flourish, communities and nations do as well.” As a young woman myself, I know that a woman can reach her full potential only when she feels safe and is treated with respect. Although many presidents have talked about the problems that women face, the women still encounter challenges related to the gender. Thus, with the next president, I would discuss policies concerning sexual violence, equal pay, and birth control and abortion.

However, young women particularly, who are studying in college or working, are at a high risk of being sexually assaulted. The research suggests that 1 in 5 young women has been sexually assaulted. This is a major problem as the victims of sexual assaults suffer from a wider range of physical and mental health problems. These problems stay with the young women for the rest of their lives and result in depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and post-traumatic disorders. They are more likely to committed suicide compared to non-victims. Holding the most powerful position in the country, the president should try to make this country a safer place for young women. In order to do so, the president should work on improving the criminal justice system. Numerous litigations such as equal pay act in 1963 and the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, have been passed to mitigate the employment discrimination. However, the disparity in the pay of the men and women is very apparent. Both young men and women pay equal money for the college. But as they graduate women earn less than their men counterparts. Since an equal amount of loan, taxes, are deduced, the lesser pay impairs their ability to save money for house, pay for college education and reduce their retirement savings. This leads to financial stress, especially in the families where a women is the sole or primary earner. The disparity in pay also results in fewer women at higher positions as it mitigates their desire of women to rise up the management ladder. These implications gravitate the need to fight for the equal pay. Although litigations like Equal Pay Act of 1963 and Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 have been passed, these litigations are not being strictly imposed. To resolve the gender wage gap, the government should consult with employers in federally-regulated sectors to apply a gender-based analysis to the design, development, implementation and evaluation of the policy. The law should clearly outline the systematic discrimination that women face in the workforce. This policy would entail employers to determine whether gender-based disparities exists and reevaluate the current pay system from an equity perspective to ensure and promote pay transparency. The law of ensuring pay equity should first be applied to the public sector, including federal public servants, employees of Crown cooperation and federally regulated companies. If we want to resolve issues over the treatment of women, we must tackle and overcome negative views of women, take preventive measures to ensure the safety of women, and bring attention to these injustices.

Women, who have the same amount of experience as men are not getting paid at the same rate as men, these women also are equally trained and educated. This shouldn’t be happening in today’s society for the fact the society lived in today is suppose to be more accepting. Men are viewed as being more popular, valuable and having higher powers than women. Additionally, we believed men deserved to have higher power by getting more money than women. After some research, we think it’s not fair that women make less than men who have the same education and the same job. In the long run, it can make it hard for women to support their families. Sexual assault is defined as any type of sexual contact or behavior that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient. Falling under the definition of sexual assault are sexual activities as forced sexual intercourse, forcible sodomy, child molestation, incest, fondling, and In the United States 80% of sexual assault victims are under the age of 30. Of that 80%, 44% are under the age of 18 (RAINN, 2016). That leaves 36% of victims between the ages of 18 and 30. These percentages become even more alarming when that 80% is of about 293,000 victims of secual assualt each year (RAINN, 2016). It is estimated that 1 in every 6 women in the US has been or will be victims of sexual assault in their lifetime. The risks of sexual assault increase on college campuses. Women ages 18-24 who are enrolled in college are 3 times more likely than women in general to suffer from sexual violence (RAINN, 2016). One would think that with all these women being sexually assaulted, one would hear more about it, or perhaps the police stations would constantly be busy. This is not the case. Sexual assault is one of the most unreported crimes, with 68% still being left unreported (RAINN, 2016). This could be because of every 100 rapists, only 2 will spend a day in jail. Of the 32 out of 100 that would be reported, only 7 are referred to an arrest (RAINN, 2016). Why would men or women want to report sexual assault when the system that is supposed to protect them fails so often, and why does this system continue to fail?

One cannot begin the discussion of gender pay gap without defining it. Simply put, gender pay gap is the inequality between men and women wages. Gender pay gap is a constant international problem, in which women are paid, on average, less than that of their male counterpart. As to if gender pay gap still exist, its exactness fluctuates depending on numerous factors such as professional status, country and regional location, gender, and age. In regards to gender, in some cases, both men and women have stated that the gap does not exist. Due to various countries initiatives to shrink the wage inequality between men and women wages in the work force, the gap has narrowed, respectively, which may have helped form such opinion. However, stating that the gender pay gap does not exist in today’s society, anywhere, is completely unlikely. Seeing that the gap has loosened its grasp in the working world, in other countries, the gap between pay has widen or remained stagnant. One cannot help but wonder why the gap remains consistent even with such substantial progress made in countries where the gap has decreased.
In today’s society, Women perform similar jobs to men. Whether it’s blue or white collar jobs, women are always present and thriving for success balancing a life of business and family. In the job market, some are graduates of the best schools and have interned at the best firms, but are still not compensated as equally as men. Following the recent comments by the CEO of Microsoft concerning women asking for raises and how they should trust the system to install equality, the issue seems to be still present, and women’s work is not rewarded similarly to men’s.
