Broadcast Yourself
YouTube is an online form of entertainment. While some viewers do not appreciate its format, others enjoy watching and creating videos on YouTube. YouTube videos range from being educational, instructional, comedic to amusing. Creating videos to upload to YouTube is being done by people of all ages from all over the world. According to author Alex K. Rich, “thirty-eight percent of Americans want to distribute content online.”(Rich 1) YouTube has brought about a new form of high quality amusement and entertainment to a lot of its viewers.
YouTube “is a popular video streaming website that displays uploaded video files created or disseminated by its users” (Belanger 1) writes Craig Belanger in his overview of YouTube. It is free and user friendly which makes it very popular. According to Jennifer Sexton this innovative website was founded by three former PayPal employees who had a “simple desire to capture short videos and share them with others.” (Sexton 1) While their intentions were not to make money and become a popular website, very quickly YouTube’s popularity increased and it is used by many internet users. According to the viewpoint of Alex K. Rich, “YouTube has lowered the bar for what is considered entertainment”(Rich 1) It is true that a majority of the videos created and uploaded to YouTube are not professional quality, it is a website that allows submitters of all ages and degrees of creativity to make a video. For example, the Lonelygirl15 videos were “shot on a $150 web camera and showed that digital videos could be made by anyone.” (Hirschorn 3)
The motto of YouTube is “Broadcast Yourself.” Michael Hirschorn wrote in his article, “Thank You, YouTube”, that the “start of low cost videos and its...

...s become part of the culture of the internet and influences things going on in the world today. As a viewer, people become of what is accepted and what is deemed not worth watching. In “YouTube: Guide to Critical Analysis”, some of the “videos that YouTube viewers have watched are 1) Soon after YouTube’s launch, clips from the 2006 Winter Olympics were posted, 2) Pop band OK Go won a 2006 Grammy award for a video that had originally achieved notoriety on YouTube and 3) excerpts from “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” were regularly featured on YouTube.” (YouTube: Guide to Critical Analysis 2) So, as long as YouTube exists, while some of the videos will be done by professionals wanting to promote their product, there will always be the submitter who wants to “broadcast themselves” and upload it, even if it is using their cell phone and the use of their internet.
The commercials appear in the press and reduce the matters to entertainment and trivialities. Given that television is the primary channel for public communication, it programs people’s minds through their images and determines the direction the people take. Postman claims that these claims are not a form of criticism of the visual arts, but types of communication become positive or adverse contingent on the link they have to symbols and functions in the social order. Television, the internet, and social media pay a similar role in the society. Since the emergence of technology a few decades ago, the various forms of communication has developed. The internet, being one of them, is primarily an international computer linkage that began over four decades ago. It is a global open linkage of networks depending on the protocol. The latest emergence of the contemporary internet is social media which consists of applications grounded on technological and ideological establishments of Web 2.0 and which facilitate the formation and exchange of use produced content (Haier, Flynn & Sternberg). It is a new kind of interaction
One word: neediness. The entire Generation Like documentary can be easily summarized with that unique word. People striving for approval, fame, and the monotonous exacerbation of what one likes and what not; they believe that they are doing something empowering with their lives, without realizing that they are being exploited. Does social media truly empowers individuals to strive for better? I do not think so, for what I saw, is that people will almost do anything to get a “like”, or getting comments on their feeds. Values and principles seem to be forgotten for the likes of fame and small advancements; so much work for little gain. In the video, there is a girl who has millions of followers and many sponsors, and the girl’s mom was asked
Those videos can even be shared on other forms of social media like Facebook and Twitter. According to The Telegraph’s article How YouTube changed the world, they state that “The online video behemoth has become the world’s third most-visited website, after Google and Facebook” (How YouTube changed the world). This website has thousands of videos that anyone with access to the it and internet can view. In the same article, they explain that Youtube has been the birthplace of some celebrities in the music, fashion, and video game scenes. (How YouTube changed the world). Because of how easy it is for a person to watch these videos and share them from all across the world, American culture, and other cultures can be spread to each other. It is almost like the United States in a website, where a wide variety of people share their different beliefs, and can influence, or inform others of what they have to show, or
For my project, I chose to reconstruct my rhetorical analysis essay in the form of a commercial or public service announcement posted to YouTube. My rhetorical analysis essay analyzed David Foster Wallace’s “Consider the Lobster” which concerned the morality of cooking and utilizing lobsters for food. Because of this, I decided to turn my analysis into a video advocating for an end to the slaughter and consumption of lobsters. Video is a common form of media for this type of advocacy, since it is easily accessible to people and doesn’t require the audience to put much effort into consuming the information. I chose to upload this video to YouTube since it is one of the most common places on the internet to share videos and has a large user base. Posting the video
Using leaders of YouTube with a large subscriber base and grouping them together for a joint effort media campaign, is proving itself very innovative. An excellent example is Hannah Hart, DailyGrace and Mamrie Hart collaborating for ‘movie night” where they get together and watch a movie on Netflix and discuss, they ask you to get a membership with Netflix (using offering a coupon code to get a free month upon subscribing to their youtube channel) and everyone watches together in real time, their request reaches around 670,000 views. This also leads to a discussion on Facebook and Twitter about what they just did. It’s like having a personal movie theatre with all of your online friends.
With its recommendation feature I am able to see an endless amount of videos that are similar to what I already watch. For instance,If my history is filled with videos of animals then my recommendation page will be clustered with alike animal content. YouTube works like a memory card that saves all the things that I can learn from and get ahead of. With today's culture, things become in demand only to be forgotten about in days to come. Objects like fidget spinners and emoji merchandise are considered the coolest things until everyone has one. Modern washed out pop culture like pointless TV shows-that create dramatic plots with resolutions that could have been avoided from the beginning- don’t mean a lot to me either. Even if YouTube is apart of popular culture, some of it’s content and users have proven to be genuine and inspire me to do more of the things I love. The videos exhibited daily past and current events happening out in the world and how one day I can be a part of that
Are technology and the media shedding the very fabric of the existence we have known? As technology and the media spread their influence, the debate over the inherent advantages and disadvantages intensifies. Although opinions vary widely on the subject, two writers offer similar views: Professor Sherry Turkle, director of the MIT Initiative on Technology and Self, in her article “Can You Hear Me Now” and Naomi Rockler-Gladen, who formerly taught media studies at Colorado State University, with her article “Me Against the Media: From the Trenches of a Media Lit Class.” Turkle asserts that technology has changed how people develop and view themselves, while at the same time affecting their concepts of time management and focus (270). Similarly, Rockler-Gladen believes media and its inherent advertising have had a profound effect on the values and thinking of the public (284). I could not agree more with Professor Turkle and Ms. Rockler-Gladen; the effects technology and media have worried and annoyed me for quite so time. The benefits of technology and media are undeniable, but so then are the flaws. People are beginning to shift their focus away from the physical world to the virtual world as they find it easier and more comfortable. The intended purpose of technology and media was to be a tool to improve the quality of life, not shackles to tie people to their devices. I no longer recognize this changed world and long for the simple world of my youth.
They put stories that are supposedly private. Imagine, stories together with sexual experiences are available and many are also provided with graphics. (Straubhaar and La Rose) Sometimes it reaches to the point that sexual violence is televised. Although it is clearly stated in YouTube’s Community Guidelines and terms of Use that YouTube is not for pornography and sexual explicit content, YouTube still contains videos with nudity and sexually suggestive content. Sexually suggestive content includes explicit texts, nude or semi-nude images and videos shared by texts, emails, and
The internet has become the television industry’s prime competitor. Reality TV has been a staple in American homes since as early as 1948. Current reality shows are edited and usually scripted to add to the dramatics of the show. The internet has opened more media outlets such as YouTube which has become a place for people to create uncut, real-life, video footage. Television has never been raw video straight from the camera which leads to setbacks with viewers for that reason alone. This study will discuss if YouTube has a greater impact on viewers than reality TV cast members.
In bringing attention to the sad state of women in the video game industry and community there is no platform better than the internet, specifically YouTube. The internet is the home of many in the gaming community and has immense potential to be a source of societal change due to the capability of spreading information around the globe in a fraction of a second. In choosing this platform, I draw inspiration from YouTube content creator Anita Sarkeesian’s Feminist Frequency, which is a web based video series that critically examines the representation of women in pop culture (“About”). Sarkeesian has been the subject of ire for her criticism of the video game industry, but her long running series illustrates that the web based video log format can be a great tool due to its accessibility and the ability for customization of content.
Streaming video content over the internet continues to grow in popularity with consumers for a variety of reasons, including the widespread availability of high speed internet, attractive video content, easy to use video streaming devices and the rising cost of cable television service. Some consumers use streaming video to enhance or supplement the typical offerings available from their local cable provider. Others take a more extreme approach and use streaming video as a means to eliminate the need for a cable television subscription altogether. Presently consumers cancelling their cable TV subscriptions are still considered a minority of all subscribers; nevertheless their steadily increasing numbers have earned the moniker of “cord cutters.” Those looking to ditch cable TV can also find a growing number of online resources that will ease their transition to cheaper online television viewing.
With the way the world is now it should not be a surprise to anyone that social media has literally taken over the world in this day and age. From late 2008 to early 2009 the size of Facebook users doubled from 100 million to 200 million in eight months, and was already up to 400 million by early 2010. Twitter also raised its number of users in 2009 from 4.5 million to 20 million (Zandt). These numbers just show what Facebook and Twitter have accomplished. Other social media sites that are getting more and more popular are Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr, Pinterest, and many others social media websites that people use on a daily basis. With one in four people using social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, it is no wonder that all of these social media websites are considered to be important (Whiteman). With a few clicks of a button or taps on a screen, a person can be connected to family and friends in every corner of the world. Social media can even allow people to see what their favorite celebrities are doing with their lives. According to Honor Whiteman,”Social media defines an array of internet sites that enable people from all over the world to interact. This can be through discussion, photos, video and audio (Whiteman).” Social media is a beast in its own right that is used by a multitude of people all over the world everyday for things such as updating their Twitter status for personal use to updating a company 's Facebook page on a weekly basis. Yes, there is no doubt about it, social media has done its share of very good things, but there is also an entire list of the negative things about using these websites that can really make a person question if they should even be on them. In the contemporary society, popular culture represents the emerging lifestyles, fashions, values, as well as customs that the mainstream population follows without hesitation and with loyalty. It embraces a blend of philosophies, opinions, beliefs, viewpoints, and imageries, besides various forms of events that specific groups of individuals adopt in the society. Popular culture plays a significant role in shaping the way people think or perceive things by offering them a unique interpretation of something that they may eventually like. In this digital age, some of the popular culture known today takes account of television programs watched by many people, the numbers of individuals who currently use the internet constantly as the best means
People can share pictures, videos, and “status updates” to let people know how they are doing or exciting things going on in that person’s life. Twitter can be similar to Facebook, but updates are limited to one hundred – forty characters. YouTube is a site specifically made to share videos, which is its only function. Vine is used to share 6 second video clips, Instagram is a picture sharing website, that just recently allowed sixteen second videos to be shared. LinkedIn is used by employers to find prospective employees and vice versa.
For example, many revolutions started on face book and it changed the lives of many people in many countries some to better and others to worse. Unfortunately the horror nature of these events have been documented on the internet, which means when children view these videos they is how life supposed to be.
