In bringing attention to the sad state of women in the video game industry and community there is no platform better than the internet, specifically YouTube. The internet is the home of many in the gaming community and has immense potential to be a source of societal change due to the capability of spreading information around the globe in a fraction of a second. In choosing this platform, I draw inspiration from YouTube content creator Anita Sarkeesian’s Feminist Frequency, which is a web based video series that critically examines the representation of women in pop culture (“About”). Sarkeesian has been the subject of ire for her criticism of the video game industry, but her long running series illustrates that the web based video log format can be a great tool due to its accessibility and the ability for customization of content. The video game industry is a one hundred million dollar industry and like any large industry, it is resistant to change, especially when the problem isn’t obvious and affecting their bottom line (Harwell). Due to this, the audience I’d like to reach isn’t in the gaming industry at all. Instead, I want to …show more content…
By following in the footsteps of other educational and critical web based series like Feminist Frequency there is a built in audience that is interested in the material and it has already proven to be an effective way of both creating and directing a conversation while providing an environment open discussion. By bringing attention to these heavy and sometimes over looked societal issues change can happen, but it must be done diligently. Virtual social spaces are the perfect place to for the discussion of women in the gaming industry and community to take place as so much of the gaming community is online, which makes Youtube the best
The two biggest wars in the world were the Great War and The World War 2 that have ended a long time ago. However, there is still another war ongoing in the world, it is a “Women’s war.” In this war, women are fighting for their own rights in every country include American. In order to encourage women in this long fight, on September 5, 1995, Hillary Clinton gave the “Women’s right are Human’s right” speech at the United Nation’s Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing. She argued for the equal rights of the women and against the abuse of women around the world. Logos, ethos, parallelism are three elements make “Women’s right are Human’s right” an effective speech.
“Women Rights” Hillary Rodham Clinton is a well-recognized woman in the United States. Her great contribution as secretary of State impact people’s lives. One of many remarkable speeches Hillary gave was the “The women rights speech”, in the 4th World Conference on Women Plenary Session where she uses strong words and emotions to appeal the audience. Even though the speech talks about women rights, she wants everyone, including men and children to listen and take action. Her use of ethos, logos and pathos throughout the speech made the audience believe in her words.
In today’s society, the dominant ethnic group continues to be the white race, as it has been for the past few centuries. Whites can ignore what is occurring in the world since the majority of the time it does not specifically affect them. The Caucasian race is very privileged, yet they are unaware of this fact, and it is, therefore, invisible to them. There are many reasons as to why this fact is true, some of which is explained in Roxane Gay’s novel “Bad Feminist,” she outlines her views on this subject and writes about what knowledge people should have about their privilege and how they can change their perceptions. People being unable to acknowledge their privilege becomes a worldwide issue and affects the lives of many individuals worldwide.
I want to make it clear, to those who may question my positionality, that I do not believe that my journey as a white person is somehow special or better than anyone else’s. I do not believe that I hold some sort of special looking glass through which the solution to whiteness can be seen. I am a production of whiteness, and I am also a human being, which means I have many, many, flaws and blind spots that I continue to work on while simultaneously being inhibited by this blindness in my effort to see past it. What I do believe, as Roxanne Gay so beautifully said in Bad Feminist, is that,
Hillary Clinton is running a campaign for a GOP nomination, in which much of her support is based on her persona as an advocate of women’s rights. Depictions of Clinton’s projected image have little basis in fact. While she is not overtly misogynistic or racist like other politicians who are running for presidency, her actions as a policymaker have had the same devastating impacts to non-white women locally in America and abroad as her male peers. Though Clinton is one of the first women to run for presidency and be taken seriously (which certainly is to due to white privilege), she still condones foreign policies that destroy the lives of women around the world.
This journal article is entirely credible and written by two women who know what they’re talking about. This article discusses how video games form stereotypes about both genders and that they impact both gamers and non-gamers. Men are portrayed as aggressive and women are unsurprisingly portrayed as sex objects. A main issue with this is that video games are mostly played by the younger generation meaning these are the ideas being imbedded into the youth of the world. The...
Instead of the franchises popularity having a positive impact, overtime, it infected the gaming market along with it’s consumers and developers such as Microsoft Game Studios and EA. It has become an aggrandized cancer on the face of video games everywhere, destroying franchises a...
"In order to create an inclusive experience for women, it is imperative that game companies design and market games with female target audiences in mind." (Gonzalez, A., Gomez, E., Orozco, R., & Jacobs, S., 2014).

The issue of sexism in video games has been going on for a long time. Similarly, Fox talks about how “Research has indicated that many video games and virtual worlds are populated by hypersexualized and unrealistic representations of women.” This shows how women have been sexualized in media which represent women as self-objective. Jess explained in his research that, “as a result of hypersexualization of women in videogames, it would lead to an increase in rape myth acceptance.” In one of Jess’ experiments, he focused on the effects of avatar features on women’s experience of self-objectification.
Video games have come a long way. They have evolved from the simple game of Pong into a complex, multi-platform, multi-genre, multi-billion dollar industry.
The media and television broadcasting of women is not all negative. But current culture is constantly taking the easy way out. It refuses to explore different ways in which women can be represented. That is why for years to come women will still be seen as motherly, passive and innocent, sex objects, or they are overlooked or seen as unimportant entities. Whether it’s motherly birds on kids TV shows or scantily clad dancers on Monday Night Football, the portrayal of women has yet to catch up with what real life women are like. There are single women, obese women, and smart women. Women who are single mom’s, lesbians, or don’t have any children at all. Women are able to do the same type of work as men without being manly. The day that women are treated as equals on television will whole new level of success for feminism.
The media needs to understand the negative effects of video games, comprehend potential benefits of video games, and know how to monitor their impact in order to
The video game market has shifted from being a predominantly male market to include the female population with games like The Sims, in which players build virtual worlds. Such games often result in online communities, where players build avatars and interact with others across the globe. My sister used to spend hours at the computer buildi...
