This movie shows the story of two very different Hispanic girls, Yolanda and Mari growing up in different households, coming of age, and creating a special bond with one another, that includes unspoken jealousy and tension towards each other at times. Growing up in Huntington Park, Yolanda is an only child with two hard working parents who only want her to worry about her school work, in order for her to have a better future. We see Yolanda as the perfect child studying hard, getting good grades, aspiring to get into a good college in order to accomplish something in her life. Mari gets a job handing out flyers in order to help her mother with the rent payment, because her mothers job is just not paying the bills. However due to gossip from the local grocer Maris mom begins to believe that she is getting the money from a boy, showing the distrust and the sort of relationship she has with her mother. Living in a single parent household is hard and tension is high due to the lack of money, and often leads to not having the best relationship with your parent. Yolands’s parents are both hard working and only want her to focus on school but since becoming friends with Mari, her grades have been declining causing her parents to become disappointed in her, she starts to stray from her respective ways and begin to have an attitude towards her parents and now seems less interested about college. After the sexual incident at Yolanda's house there is an unspoken jealousy and tension between Mari and Yolanda. When Yolanda is asked by a boy in there class to be his girlfriend, Mari lashes out and walks away from Yolanda stating that she didn't need Maris
