Members of the Y Generation include those born between the years 1982 and 1994. A generation is known as a group of people born in a particular period who would have experienced similar events or experiences while growing up. There are often negative connotations made against members of the Y Generation, as they are known for being spoilt, overly confident and too dependent on social media and technology. They are the first generation to have grown up with high-definition television, mobile phones, internet and social media. Generation Y are possibly more interested in the environment, caring and community orientated than previous generations. The majority of this generation is now in young adulthood and starting their careers. They make up most of the young singles and couples market and are a very critical group of consumers. Many of the claims made about Generation Y are based on little evidence and contradictory, this report seeks to examine these claims. The purpose of this report is to investigate whether or not people born in the Y Generation, between the years of 1982-1994 really hold the beliefs and attitudes the media portrays them to have. Generation Y will be studied to find out if they are as technologically minded as they are said to be, and if they hold concern for the world they live in and the environment. It is important that business have a good understanding of this section of the workforce, so after examining Generation Y’s attitudes, values and beliefs it will be evident whether or not they make excellent employees. 3. Generation Y is renowned for conducting their personal and work life through their phones, iPads and laptops. They are up to date with the latest software and gadgets, and can pick up anything technological must faster than past generations. Although, all this technology can be harmful to their performance in personal interactions, as they are missing out on a lot of the face-to-face communication that is necessary in the workplace. This generation seems to have a sense of entitlement beyond that of their older peers, they have a strong desire for their work and accomplishments to be recognised and rewarded. This drives their need for regular promotions, which they see as an important part of their career development. Generation Y strives to have their voices heard and feel empowered (Gratton, 2013).
In Catherine Rampell’s article, “A Generation of Slackers? Not So Much,” the idea of the younger generation, known as Generation Y or Millennials thought of as lackadaisical and indolent by older generations has been quashed by Rampell’s explanations of the differing behaviors and ideas held by these two generations, causing a misunderstanding and misinterpretation of productivity. The era of computers has especially been a major cause of such a rift, specifically the dependence on technology of which has contributed to the growth of synergistic and collaborative dispositions amongst the younger generations- behaviors once thought of as ineffectual in the workplace.
The millennial generation is made up of people that were born from 1978-1999. People from older generations say the millennial generation people are growing up being unprepared for the real world. In an article titled “The Tethered Generation” written by Kathryn Tyler she talks about why the millennial generation is so different than any other generation. She also explains how they depend heavily on their parents well into adulthood. In this article Tyler allows the reader to see why HR professionals are worried about the millennial generation entering their work force. Using Toulmin’s schema the reader can judge the effectiveness of Tyler’s essay to the audience, and this schema is used to persuade the audience to
Generation Y, more commonly referred to as the “millennials”, is today’s group of young people. Similar to other generations, each cohort is labeled with unique characteristics and inevitably faces adversities while taking its place in society. Many American’s today debate their views on the youngster generation, but none the less all sides can agree the discussion has become a hot topic. Catherin Rampell creates an open discussion in her article, A Generation of Slackers? Not So Much, addressing the main issue: Are millennials a generation of slackers. I feel strongly that my views align with Rampell’s, in believing my generation has already begun to show its capability of doing great things. Through analysis of the text and my own personal experience I am able to dispute the opposition towards my generation as well as, express the positive relationship of millennials in
early childhood. Gen Y members are much more racially and ethnically diverse and they are much more segmented as an audience aided by the rapid expansion in Cable TV channels, satellite radio, the Internet etc. Gen Y are less brand loyal and the speed of the Internet has led the cohort to be similarly flexible and changing in its fashion, style consciousness and where and how it is communicated with. Gen Y
Ron Alsop, in his article “The ‘Trophy Kids’ Go to Work” explains that the millennial generation, 'Trophy Kids,' are noticed how they do in their job and market. The author wrote a convincing essay from the essay’s composition.
We now have five generations in the workplace. Formally the workplace consisted of two groups the old timers and known it all young hotshots. For the first time in history, there are five generations working side by side. They are the traditional generation (born pre – 1945), Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964), Generation X (born 1965-1980), Generation Y (born 1981-1995), and the Linkster generation (born after 1995). Knowing each generation characteristics helps immensely in attracting, engaging, retaining, developing, and advancing its members. Together they represent a vast pool of talent and skill, the most crucial resource that organizations have.
The scope of this essay will focus on generational differences and more specifically how understanding each generation in various aspects will help the company grow and ensure individuals feel a part of the whole. At this point there is five extraordinarily different generations participating in the workforce, each generation offers both unique and similar characteristics (Noe). Considering that the oldest generation in the work force were born around 1925 -1945, while the newest members of the work force were born after 1996, we can assume based on the amount of changes in the world that these two groups would be worlds apart. Because of these large gaps it is imperative that companies train to this or it could become a point of discontent amongst employees and senior leadership. When you look traditionalist s they are defined by the era they grew up in, an era of sacrifices, unwavering patriotism, and absolute respect for all rules and regulations. It would be easy for a traditionalist to misunderstand a Millennial, a generation that hasn’t had to sacrifice as much, has been known to challenge rules, and their questioning nature may come across as lazy and
These five generations will be a part of the discussion in this paper and for the purpose of this paper Generation Yers and Millennials will be grouped together in discussions.
The parents were successful and they had many different opportunities. They are more optimistic than the Xers. They tent to work hard however they will only work until the end of their shift unlike the Xers who prefer to complete the task/project. Generation Y`s are great at multitasking and they are highly educated.
In today’s workforce, it is very common to have coworkers in multiple generations. The four generations that are currently in the workforce are the Traditionals, Baby Boomers, Generation X and Generation Y. Currently, the Baby Boomers and Generation Y make up the majority of employees in the workforce. There is great diversity between the generations in terms of what motivates them to perform well at work, attitudes about work, causes of conflict in the workplace, and communication in the workplace. Another aspect of the generations that has great diversity is the way in which they learn in the workplace. Because of this, employers have to provide training and development opportunities that cater to each generation. Baby Boomers typically prefer traditional classroom training, while Generation Y prefers online, self-paced training.
All three articles in this article explore generational perspectives and values in the workplace. Two of the articles go into depth regarding the specific characteristics which are common in each generation. These characteristics and values are important in understanding how multiple generations can work cohesively in the workplace. All three of these articles are in alignment that for the first time in history we are seeing four extremely different generations working together and that this is causing conflicts. Companies that can embrace all generations, championing diversity and inclusion are bound to be more successful. The purpose of these articles is exactly the same. They all explore the different generational views and how to
“Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” is a term that can be used to describe Generation Z. But who is Generation Z? Generation Z is a group of people born between the years of 1995 and 2009. Generation Z is part of a generation that is global, social, visual. “Gen-Zers are known to be the most connected, educated and sophisticated generation ever”.The term “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” is used because this particular generation is known to be more technological apparently making this generation “Better”. This particular generation is also known for having a short attention span, anything that is not fast paced is not for this Generation thus making the generation Faster. Generation Z is also a generation ‘globally focused through the appearance of global pop culture, global brands, and endless virtual realities’ They are not known to care about “Important” issues such as politics, the government and epidemics etc. Generation Z is a generation not known to hold back, Gen-Zers are always looking for a challenge to incorporate into their every day lives pushing the boundaries and tryi...
Time changes everything, and people are no exception. As philosopher Herakliotos said that “the only thing that is constant is the change”. Each generation has grown and born at different times, so time causes some crucial differences between 60's and 2000's generations. Who could have guessed that a half of century later most of the people communicate with someone who lives in the different country or easy access would be provided? Now, all of them are possible with the rapid progress of the time. As time has changed, people's lives have changed immediately. As a result of these changes which create differences between 60's generation and 2000's generation have occurred
We are a generation that is failing but remarketing it as above average intelligence. This is causing a narcissistic epidemic that starts off in young adolescents and leads well into adulthood. The now grown up members of generation Y have entered the job field, and feel entitled to more than an entry level position, they are not willing to put in the hours and hard work to climb the corporate ladder. This has led to a very lazy generation who wants what they want, and wants it now, this national issue can be remedied with two things, accountability, and less praise when nothing is deserved. One thing that Generation Y members are good at is selling themselves. We are a generation that has seen nothing but advertisements flash across the television screen. We even watch people sell themselves. The Kardashian’s are a household name, they worked to sell themselves and become a billion dollar franchise. E! Proliferates the ideals that one can create a sex tape and in a few years have a million dollar business. We learn to sell everything including
Also with multiple generations in workplace today, organisations must deliberately put in place different processes, motivators and tools to stimulate collaboration and create a knowledge sharing culture that appeals to all generations. To attract and retain generation Y, organisations need to employ leading edge, real time collaboration practices to effectively engage their employees while at the same time managing the more technology adverse baby boomer generation that prefers face to face collaboration. Simply put, the workforce has changed while the workplace has not.
