The Victorian time period started in 1837 when Queen Victoria took the throne. The people living in England that were ruled by Queen Victoria at the time, were called “Victorians”, this congregation of people were also said to be very “stuffy, prudish, hypocritical and narrow minded” (Everett). During this time period, if you were at the nobles rank you were the very best you could be and everyone wanted to be at that rank. Even the literature during this time had a lot to do with social improvement (Everett). Although Robert Browning was technically a “Victoria poet” he did not go along with the “typical Victorian style” that everyone from this time period was used to, Robert Browning had a very different style that included violence and many different dramatic verses (faculty.unlv.edu). In 1812 on May 7th, Robert Browning was born (The comp. Poetical works of Browning) . He was born in the Parish of St. Giles in Camberwell, London to a middle-class family Browning was the oldest of three children. Browning`s family consisted of a boy and two girls. Browning`s younger sister, Clara, died during childbirth, while his other sister, Sarianna, outlived him. Robert Browning and his family were always very close, and he was also taught many good values from his father, who conducted most of his education and is said to be why his writings were so strange (The Comp. Poetical works of Browning). When browning was twelve years old he wrote his first small piece of poetry which was quite good for a young man or even women at his age, but as advanced as his talents were, Robert Browning did no writing in between the ages of thirteen and twenty (Knipp). For many of Browings fans and himself, poetry did not need to be a big extravagent piece of work, and for he critics who did not understand that aspect, Browning`s work would always “lacking something”. Although there was not understanding of that, there was still a light at the end of the tunnel for Browning in the respect of being appreciated by later critics. Of course, not all of Browning`s poetry reviews were pesimistic, and one literary scholar, William DeVane, considered the poet`s name to have increased as he had gotten older, along with the number of positive reviews. Although Browning was obviously not happy by the many negative reviews he received, but even some of the most brutal reviewers acknowledged his flat out raw talent, even if they did not agree with how he went about using it.

Byron was born on January 22, 1788 in London, England. He was the son of Captain John Byron and Catherine Gordon (Magill 312). His father had a daughter from a previous marriage, named Augusta. Byron was born with a clubbed right foot, which gave him a limp every time he walked for the rest of his life. His father was greedy and sought out money from all of his wives, so in 1789 Byron moved with his mother to Aberdeen. He grew up with a rough childhood, being abused by his mother often. However, he found help when he began reading the Bible and developed a love for history. This eventually led to his ideas for writing and his journeys across the globe (“Lord”).
Elizabeth Barrett Browning was a talented writer and over the years her stories and poems has not changed. Including the poem ‘The Cry of the Children’ but yet from now and then everyone’s views on the poem has changed in different ways such as the sentimental values and the religious views. Alethea Hayter, a modern critic, said she found that the poem was way too religious for the modern audience. Angela Leighton said after she read it she would think that the modern audience would see it as “propagandist ically tear-jerking poem” (Henry). Elizabeth Barrett Browning, while being one of the more talented victorian poets, wrote a poem ‘The Cry of the Children’ that modern critics do not really agree with apposed to critics from earlier times. What in the poem is looked at so differently that we now have disagreements.

The Victorian Era is a remarkable time in history with the blooming industries, growing population, and a major turnaround in the fashion world. This era was named after Queen Victoria who ruled United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from June 1837 until she passed away 64 years later in January 1901.When Victoria received the crown, popular respect was strikingly low. The lack of respect for the position she had just come into did not diminish her confidence. Instead she won the hearts of Britain with her modesty, grace, straightforwardness, and her want to be informed on the political matters at hand even though she had no input. She changed Britain into a flourishing country. She also impacted how women interacted during this era based on her personality.

Browning's amazing command of words and their effects makes this poem infinitely more pleasurable to the reader. Through simple, brief imagery, he is able to depict the lovers' passion, the speaker's impatience in reaching his love, and the stealth and secrecy of their meeting. He accomplishes this feat within twelve lines of specific rhyme scheme and beautiful language, never forsaking aesthetic quality for his higher purposes.
Elizabeth Barrett Browning was one of the braver literary pioneers. Choosing to utilize the vocabulary she favored rather than submit to the harsh criticisms of those who held the power to make or break her is an applaudable novelty about her. Many writers, having been successful in their literary exploits, are susceptible to accusations that their work was catered to critics. Surely, this cannot and should not be said of Elizabeth Barrett Browning.

The span of time is referred to as the Victorian Period (Abrams 1860). At the death of Queen Victoria, her subjects reacted in such a way that they rebelled against many of the ideas put forward during her reign. Even her own country recognized her life and rule as a distinct historical period separated from the rest (Abrams 1861).
