Thin Pickings I can honestly say, I never thought I would ever be writing an essay about my food preferences, even though it is something in my life I have always been in question or thought about. I love food, but my relationship has been a little shaky with it through the years. This has made my food preferences fluctuate a lot, however my relationship with these food preferences have no doubt morphed me into the person I am today. Personally, I am currently a fan of a lot of vegetables, meats, cheesy, and hot foods. To be more specific, I guess the foods that I like are just healthy choices that the average person eats during a daily breakfast, lunch and dinner. However, I never always liked those types of food, or had the structure that I have now with eating. The types of food I liked changed throughout the years from my early lifestyle, my teenage years, and my early adulthood, and have made me the person I am today. When I was a little girl, I would eat whatever my heart desired. Cakes, cheese curls, potato chips, and many other salty, sweet snacks were a few of my favorite treats to eat when I got home from school. My family would always stock up on snacks to make me happy. I remember having soda with every meal. It wasn 't that my parents were feeding me unhealthy food, for I would usually end up sneaking food whenever I could find the chance. I would still be fed breakfast, lunch, and dinner by my family until I turned nine years old. That 's when my family taught me how to cook simple things, so they wouldn 't have to worry about it as much. However, instead of cooking, I would just eat more junk food. My obsession with these junky and sweet foods shaped my identity. I started waking up early to make myself breakfast to eat before a shift. I simply started eating the foods that I enjoyed, and because of that, I didn 't mind eating these foods. I felt like a full person again. I took more time off of work to make sure I had rest days where I could make myself better meals and time to relax. I felt grown up, and more mature as I knew it was my responsibility to start taking care of my body, rather than ignoring the signs that it needed help. I am currently a healthy, 19 year old woman that is still growing. My food preferences have shaped my identity into a big part of the person I am today. It is a timeline of my life from when I was a little girl, to where I have grown now. Instead of worrying about my food, I live it, and enjoy it.
In the essay “Her Chee-to Heart”, by Jill McCorkle, she discusses about the various difficulties she has encountered of being a junk-food junkie and the struggles of overcoming the guilty pleasures of junk food. In the book, “In Defense of Food” by Michael Pollan, he critiques scientists and government recommendations about their nutritional advice. Pollan presents a strong case pointing out the many flaws and problems that have risen over the years of following scientific studies and government related warnings on the proper amount of nutrients needed for a healthy diet. Proper nutrition is important in maintaining a long and healthy life. Most Americans are rushed due to their busy work schedules, and do not take the time to plan their diets properly. Like me, most Americans are unaware of the importance of eating a healthy diet and consume too many foods without the proper nutrients. Throughout my life I have been fortunate. I have not had any major health problems, and have been able to consume most foods without having to worry about gaining weight. These last two years, however, I started to gain weight and have become concerned with my diet. Changing my poor eating habits has been difficult for me, however, having this assignment has taught me that it is not as difficult as I previously imagined.
There is no surprise that food is important in all aspects of our lives—it is shared amongst families, celebrated as a major part of our culture, and crucial to our daily routine that keeps us fit, healthy, and active. Today’s western culture glorifies a skewed perspective on how food is supposed to fit into our lives. Somehow this perception has led us to believe we no longer have the time or money it takes to prepare a wholesome, healthy meal that is shared at the dinner table with family. For years, I have been eating what I want. Food choices are a significant factor that affects our health. What we like or crave, often, is the determining variable in what we eat. Finding the right balance of food choices is the key factor in improving our health benefits. Choosing nutrient-dense foods will provide more nutritional value than foods that are found to be low in nutrient density. Making the right choices in foods, however, is extremely difficult. One of the reason’s why I felt my nutrition needed to changes is because nutrition is a huge part of a healthy lifestyle, the way that we eat and what foods we consume can have a huge impact on our everyday lives. Nutrition plays a huge role in multiple facets of a person’s life energy, health, skin, weight, confidence, and more making having a good control on your eating habits extremely important. Food is a great obsession to human beings; it also can say something about us beyond what we decide to put in our mouths. The seventh grade health curriculum at Wayne Central teaches that foods are either gold, silver, or bronze; representing healthy, okay, and unhealthy retrospectively. This information is accompanied by instruction to not eat bronze foods and eat silver foods sparingly. Education that gives strict, polarized, definitions of food can cause adolescents to become pre-occupied with what they eat and dissatisfied with themselves. Food is a major part of everyone’s everyday life. It’s hard to imagine life without the chocolate cake on your fingers or a carne asada taco in your mouth. Enjoying delicious desserts and fast food seem extremely magnificent to eat and spend money buying them. Although, there have been many controversies in the United States on how it’s the largest country with the most obesity regarding children, which affects their health, many people are still going throughout their day snacking. My favorite meal is the chicken fettuccini pasta. I chose this dish because I can never stop eating it. The meal is made up of warm tenderized chunks of chicken, delicate smooth creamy white sauce, and many varieties of sliced up vegetables. However, when I was a child vegetables has always been difficult to eat. It prevented me from enjoying my favorite meal because I would always have to take out the mixed vegetables in the meal. As a child I 've tried avoiding vegetables, but was found throughout the school cafeteria 's food, my mother 's cooking, or many fancy restaurants. There was nowhere to run. Over the years, my mother knew I was struggling to eat vegetables. She worked very hard by coming up with her own recipes in order for me to eat healthy. From mixing in the vegetables into the meals I usually eat or to trick me into eating meat but was actually vegetables. Soon later I came to realize how much effort she has put into the meals. All those hour and hard work my mother put it allowed me to enjoy my favorite meal again.

Previously to taking this class, I had never given much thought to my eating habits. I always thought of the way I chose to eat as one of those things I didn’t need to concern myself with too heavily now because I’m a young broke college student. The way I eat is pretty similar to the way most of my friends eat and when you live away from home, that seems like the norm for people in college. However, after applying what I’ve learned in this class to my life, I’ve realized that the dietary choices I make now affect not only my current health, but my future health as well. So overall, I would say that my eating habits are pretty bad, but I’m working on making them better.
