Workaholics Workaholics are those who work at the expense of long hours every day without breaks. Being a workaholic is different from those who are a normal hard worker. The former had intense behavior of concerning their work and always to stay till the end of the day to get it finish while the latter has maintained a great quality of working benefits of their families and co-workers. Research had shown more on how being a workaholic isn’t a good sign. The signs that are going to be dealing with is health issues, no breaks, and the denial of being one. The first sign of being a workaholic is damaging your health in your body from working too hard. Previous generations have a strong belief of keeping work and home life separate; that work is for work and home is for play (Rampell, 2011, para 21). Today’s professionals do not seem to abide by similar beliefs, constantly crossing the borders of one into the other. While many recognize this as an issue that could result in employees being less productive, it has actually resulted in them accepting that their work may run late into the evening or even into the weekend. I agree with this completely in that I grew up being taught that business is business and personal is personal; you leave your home life at the door. But now times have changed, and my weekends are no longer dedicated to my home life, but for work, because I attend classes during the week. Also, in my line of work in the Allied Health industry, it is a requirement to work off hours. In my experience it may seem that no matter how hard I may try to balance school, work, and family something always suffers. I simply try to remind myself that if I work hard and try to maximize my time that I should be able to accomplish all I need to do. Workaholics – people, who have a compulsive and unrelenting need to work (www.dictionary.com) – appear more and more among the working people of United States and other developed countries. At first glance, workaholics do not seem to be such a problem for industry and society as a whole. But in spite of all devotion to their work the workaholic will not be as valuable as a normal worker. Workaholics do not think about anything else except work that can cause severe health problems and can cause problems on their work. All that causes a reduction of economic profit for the company.
In the book Outliers, and in the articles, “Meaningful Work”, “Do, Just, Do: A Journey to Meaningful, Satisfying work”, and “ You Wont Find Meaningful work Looking Outside Yourself”, The authors Malcolm Gladwell, Michael F. Steger, Lori Deschene, and Keven wood describe what the joy of meaningful is to them.Life is what you make of it and it’s and up to you to decide what you will get out of it. Some people may work eight hour shifts Monday through Friday miserable, exhausted, depressed, unhappy, and under a lot of pressure and stress from their jobs. Others may do the same, similar, or different jobs being comfortable, happy with life, and pleased with their job position. Your job should be one of the most important things to you because you are there on average forty hours a week and most of your time is spent there. It should be important that you enjoy what you do because it is practically your second home. Meaningful work is a job you enjoy doing, are compassionate about, never tired of, and do for the fulfillment of yourself , it is important to success because if one enjoys what they do opportunities in their career path will only expand.
Ouch! She felt a tight squeeze to the left arm. With seventeen tardies, three truancy letters, fourteen missing assignments, and lack of sleep, she dolefully cupped her head in her hands and realized she can’t wake up from this nightmare with a pinch. But do not be alarmed, she is not ill nor depressed she is your average slacker. They are not uncommon; you may come across one at work, social outings or where they are most commonly seen, at school. They are known to look just like any other student with only a few slight differences. If you look closely you can notice a slight dull in the eyes or down pull of the mouth, all small details separating them from the rest of their peers. Slackers are easily spotted out by lack of work effort, empty seats in front of you, and constant procrastination of assignments. But do not worry because there are many ways to prevent yourself from becoming a slacker.
My past experience of procrastinating caused me to nearly fail a class, due to letting the gratification monkey get a hold of me. Even though, Tim Urban in his article, “Inside The Mind Of A Master Procrastinator,” discusses the entities of procrastination. The definition of workaholism from a dictionary would be someone who has a compulsion to work all time and a workaholic is someone who loves to work or who is addicted to work. How can this people work throughout the whole day and be happy and never tired knowing that they sleep only for 4-5 hours a day. Perhaps the main reason for this is that people evaluate themselves more on measurable things such as personal achievements and financial worth – not emotional wellness. This aspect has increased the number of depressed people in the population. With many people being unaware of how to deal with depression, they are turning to smoking. As a result, long working hours have been associated with smoking behaviors (Burke & Cooper 2008:46). The most affected people are the young people. This behavior has increased the number of people suffering from cancer and other respiratory related diseases in the world.
