An immigrant from the Dominican Republic, Ramon Robles is a middle aged male, who first came to the United States at the age of 24. He lived in New York City for ten years and then moved to St. Louis. Facing many hardships throughout his life Ramon endured the countless challenges placed before him during his lifetime. Ramon typically sports short hair, so short it is easily mistaken for a shaved head at first glance. His skin is a glazed caramel color. Combined with his graying goatee it gives his face the appearance of a sea salt covered caramel candy. Blind as a bat, he wears two-tone rectangular framed glasses, black on the upper half and clear just like the glass on the bottom half, giving off the illusion that the glass is floating in mid-air. Though his teeth are not perfect (as some are over lapping), his smile is just as bright as a freshly washed white t-shirt. Standing at 5’9 Ramon isn’t the tallest man around; however his presence is larger than life. His belly is large and with a slight protrusion. His chest is large and barrel shaped. His cheeks are swollen like a squirrel with it’s filled with acorns. Ramon has hands with motor oil and grease permanently embedded in his palms and finger prints. At a young age he might have been a …show more content…
handsome fellow; however, age has taken a toll on those good looks, as he is now 48 and wrinkles have drawn themselves on his forehead, under his eyes, and around his mouth. His chest, back and shoulders are covered in a thick blanket of hair so thick it’s as if he is wearing an animal pelt. His legs and arms give the appearance of gauntlets and fur boots respectively. Ironic seeing as he was brought up in the tropical climate of the Caribbean. Rarely is he seen wearing anything other than a pair of Converse sneakers, dark colored jeans and a button down shirt. With a charismatic personality Ramon is a very social and lively person. He always brings a positive energy into the room. His charisma can be seen whenever he poses for a picture, his signature pose being getting down on one knee and pointing directly at the camera. Having many friends and family who drawn to his magnetic aura. Those who are close to him will say that he gives the dominant impression of perseverance, as he has endured many hard ships throughout his life. Originally from a small poverty stricken town in the Dominican Republic, Ramon spent most of his child hood wearing ill-fitting clothing and walking the dirt roads of his home town without any shoes. Coming to the United States during his mid-twenties Ramon left behind his first love and his oldest daughter in pursuit of a better life. Unable to speak English or understanding the American culture Ramon had to make adjustments to survive in the crime riddled streets of Brooklyn, New York. Going hungry and homeless for many days he eventually found work as a construction worker. Ramon’s lack of education led him to work many lackluster occupations working as a custodian, waste collector, commercial truck driver, mechanic, stone setter for a jewelry company, an Uber driver, and as an electrician. Three years later Ramon would yet again find love meeting the mother of his oldest son; however, while visiting his family in the Dominican Republic with his now wife their son was unexpectedly born.
Unable to return to the United States with their son Ramon and wife eventually parted ways, leaving their only child together to be raised with Ramon’s parents in the Dominican Republic until the age of 5. Facing heart break yet again Ramon had to part ways with his oldest son once more; he was moving to St. Louis reason being the jewelry company Ramon had worked for at the time were relocating. He had finally found a well-paying job after 10 years since he left his hometown and had feared being unable to support his
children. Though Ramon has experienced poverty, homelessness, and heart break; He continues to strive for the best things life has to offer.

Rodriguez believed that although he experienced a drastic physical changed, his mental state stayed the same. He states that, “After that summer, a great deal-and not very much really-changed in my life. The curse of physical shame was broken by the sun; I was no longer ashamed of my body. No longer would I deny myself the pleasing sensations of my maleness.” Richard Rodriguez has finally accepted himself as who he is after his hard work at his summer job. In his essay, he uses imagery to show who he became when he wrote, “The torso, the soccer player’s calves and thighs, the arms of the twenty-year-old I never was, I possess now in my thirties.” He urges the reader to indulge in their body work and to change their body for their personal likings and not for others. Rodriguez depicts a moment in life when he visited a school in the ghetto. He says that, “Ghetto girls mimic high-fashion models. Their dresses are of bold, forceful color; their figures elegant, long; the stance theatrical. Boys wear shirts that grip at their overdeveloped muscular bodies… Bad nutrition does not yet tell.” He states this to show how the youth are taking advantage of what they were born with and have yet to accept themselves without being flashy or trying to mimic others that they believe look better than

The story “The One Legged Wrestler Who Conquered his Sport then Left it all behind” by David Merrill is about a young man and his wrestling career in high school and his time at Arizona State University. Anthony Robles was faced with many distinctive and difficult challenges as he was born with the horrendous fact of missing a crucial part of the human body, his right leg. Many believe a person born with this disability can’t have an athletic career, but Anthony found wrestling. When he began wrestling he didn’t draw anything but laughter from the audience, but as his talent grew, this changed. As he dominated the high school level of competition in his junior and senior years with an astonishing record of 96-0, he was declined from his top choice schools which were Iowa, Oklahoma State, and Columbia because they didn’t believe he would be a success at the National Collegiate Athletic Association level. They believed he was “too small” to win at that high level of wrestling. Years later he managed to walk away with his first NCAA title going 36-0 his senior year of college with an overall college record of 121-20. As he walked away a
