Since India’s first nationwide election in 1995, through legislative fiat, more than 800,000 women have entered local government through gender quotas. However, these roles may not have a significant impact on jobs and education for women in rural India. Historically, rural women in India did not hold formal jobs, rather they performed a plethora of laborious tasks to raise their households. Wadley recounts the story of Amma, who started her days at four in the morning - grinding grains, cleaning the household, and cooking for a large family (Wadley, 2). A woman 's role in rural India was to primarily care and maintain their household while the men were expected to farm the land. These duties consumed her entire life. These expectations are expected of future generations of rural women as well. Some rural women, such as several daughter-in-laws in Dadi’s Family, help their husbands manage the fields of crop in addition to their everyday duties. In Amma’s generation, only 4% of village women had an education at the time, as most women worked due to the relatively far distances for higher grades. (Wadley, 2) The next generation had better access to school as villages built primary and middle schools in the 1950’s, but any higher grades were still off-limits for the majority of women. Most women remained illiterate as the overall female literacy rate in the 1960’s increased only to 9 percent (Wadley, 3). Unfortunately, this situation has further shown the structural issues and inequalities of cities, as most migrants end up having a poor quality of life living in informal settlements as highlight substantially by Boo. From the very beginning of history, women were portrayed to be insignificant in comparison to men in society. A woman was deemed by men to be housewives, bear children and take care of the household chores. Even so, at a young age girls were being taught the chores they must do and must continue through to adulthood. This idea that the woman’s duty was to take charge of household chores was then passed through generations, even to this day. However, this ideology depends on the culture and the generation mothers were brought up in and what they decide to teach their daughters about such roles.
She grew up with her mom, dad, and thirteen siblings on a farm and enjoyed it very much. Laura and her sisters helped her mother with tend to the house. Her mother worked from home doing chores for other people and the interviewee continued on saying “That’s all married women could do.” Laura stated how there weren’t a lot of jobs for women to begin with. Most of the jobs available for women went to those who were widows or single so it was normal for married women to work from home. The women working from home not only did laundry and iron for other families for income but they also were babysitting the children of people working outside of their home. Her father never did any of the household chores, and was never asked to help with them either. He did all of the work that needed to be done outside such as farming, cleaning the barn, cutting grass, etc.. Her brothers also helped the father complete these tasks. The work they did included milking the cows and goats, cleaning out the barn, tending to the chickens by cleaning their chicken coops and gathering eggs. They then walked to the nearest store to sell their items. “Each of us had our own set of chores we had to do daily or we didn’t eat supper,” the Laura explained. “We had to dust, sweep, cook, do laundry, make beds, wash the dishes, anything to keep the house
Many traditional women faced those same challenges of balancing the care of their children and household obligations while successfully satisfying their working husbands. “They took pride in a clean, comfortable home and satisfaction in serving a good meal because no one had explained to them that the only work worth doing is that for which you get paid”. The responsibility to solve the social inequality lies with everyone. Empowerment is a key aspect in not only raising awareness for women’s rights but allows those facing discrimination to fight for themselves. One way individuals and society as a whole can empower is through governmental activism. Legislation promoting equality, such as the Equal Pay Act, help women receive fair wages for equal work. Other laws that improve women’s rights are those abolishing arranged marriages. Fighting against arranged marriages solves other societal issues such as the fact “only 40 percent of Indian women can read, compared with 60 percent of men” (Kazmin).

Governments in developing countries should organize an economically and political stable environment, to be economically attractive (Maxfield, 1998 as cited in Richards & Gelleny, 2007). Other critics state governments are forced to cut expenditures in education and social programs. This phenomenon especially affects women (Ayres and McCalla, 1997, as cited in Richards & Gelleny, 2007). Since the public sector is one of the main employers of females, women are often the most disadvantaged by governmental efforts to cut expenditures in the public sector (Hemmati and Gardiner, 2004, as cited in Richards & Gelleny, 2007). In the year 1869, John Stuart Mill published a controversial essay, “The Subjection of Women”, that advocated equality between sexes in a male-dominant society. In this essay, I will demonstrate that Mill’s analysis regarding the systematic subjection of women, by an education system producing conventional “womanly” characters favorable to men, is correct. However, I will argue that this analysis does not apply to today due to the advancement of the political rights and powers, progression of social equality, and improved economic conditions of women in countries with high education indexes. The education index is referring to the statistics on literacy rate, gross enrollment ratios, and other factors compiled by the UN that determine which countries have exemplary education.
Despite progress in recent years girls still suffer a lot of disadvantage in education systems. While gender equality in education remains a crucial issue for many countries women still account for two-thirds of the world’s illiterate population. Estimated thirty one million girls of primary school age and thirty four million girls of lower secondary school age were not enrolled in school in 2011. Girls’ education is important to the achievement of quality learning. Girls who have been educated are likely to marry later and to have smaller and healthier families. Educated women can recognize the importance of health care and know how to seek it for themselves and their children. Education helps girls and women to know their rights and to gain confidence to claim them. However, women’s literacy rates are significantly lower than men’s in most developing countries. UNICEF recognizes the opportunities provided through girls’ education and it supports governments in the reduction of gender discrimination through interventions at national, local and community levels aimed to empower girls.
