In the contemporary society, education is a foundational human right. It is essentially an enabling right that creates various avenues for the exercise of other basic human rights. Once it is guaranteed, it facilitates the fulfillment of other freedoms and rights more particularly attached to children. Equally, lack of education provision endangers all fundamental rights associate with the welfare of human beings. Consequently, the role of education and in particular girl child education as a promoter of nation states welfare cannot be overemphasized. As various scholars asserts, the challenges and problems faced by the African girl child, to enjoy her right to education are multifaceted. Such difficulties include sexual abuse, child labor, discrimination, early pregnancies, violence and poverty, culture and religious practices (Julia 219). Across the developing world, millions of young girls lack proper access to basic education. In the contemporary society, this crisis, which is particularly critical in remote and poor region of sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia have fascinated increased public attention. However, almost all global nation states have assured their commitment in addressing various girl child challenges and allowed a declaration to enable each young girl and boy receive education by the year 2015 (Herz and Sperling 17). This target was firmly established and approved in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. However, this study will focus on girls’ education in Africa and its impacts to their livelihood.

In societies in Cambodia and Thailand, an uneducated girl is very disgraceful, and the people do not care what happens to those girls. Families will sell their own children to pimps because their child is uneducated. Education for girls keeps them off the streets where they are likely to be trafficked. An educated girl is seen to be more worthy than one who is not, so the traffickers will not seek them because they might have more protection. Girls find it hard to stay in school because they cannot see the long term rewards I can have. They are overwhelmed with the pressure that they must provide for the family right away, so they drop out and find a job of any sort. Building schools is the first way to make sure girls have the opportunity to seek an education. Rarely do girls have any sort of education, so when a girl actually receives any education, it is acknowledged by the other villagers. Sex traffickers deceive uneducated girls by offering them jobs selling fruit in different cities. Once the girls are sold, they cannot escape or try to because they are illiterate. They would not know where to go. Another side of education is to educate the rest of the world as Half the Sky aims to do so. Education is extremely important for unshackling the freedom of these women who hold great potential. Today, more women are in school than men. These women take up classes in medicine, geology, engineering and computer science. Sam Mbah, a Nigerian author and activist, writes, “The traditional African society would not achieve balance and harmony without the role of the women.” Women in African society are often looked down upon however, they are fighting against stereotypes.
As time allowed more men and more women to be schooled together, it was evident that a woman's presence alone would not ensure an equally beneficial education. The school systems continue to follow a gendered curriculum, created mainly by men in order to serve men. It is the reinforcement of the gender biases and assumptions through their methodical distribution and teaching of stereotypes and ideas that put the education of men and women on two separate levels. There is no example to follow when it comes to the equal education of children because even though they receive the same education, it is far from equal. It is this along with the lack of recognition towards women who have achieved greatness both in and out of education that creates an outsider status for the female student (Lasser, 1987).

For many years women in America have experienced many different situations in the education arena. Situations that women experienced were very different than the experiences males experienced in the same classroom and women expectations were also different than that of their male counterparts. Renzetti and Curran wrote in their Fifth Edition of Women, Men and Society that women were expected to not only attend to their studies but also attend to the males’ laundry, cleaning their rooms and meal service. (Page 101.) Women were expected to keep silent and were only allowed to major in degrees like Home Economics and Teaching degrees. Was this treatment of women the same for women in other cultures? This paper will show that women in America fare far better than in other countries in their ventures in education. The countries that will be explored are the United Kingdom, Brazil, Africa, and China.
The rise of feminism still seems to be a new development that is gradually being accepted in the African society. This is because the traditions in Africa and some other countries in the world defines the position and the rights of both genders which has gone for generations. Women had limited access to education and also limited or sometimes completely removed from decision making whether in the family or community. According to Shawn F. Dorious and Glenn Firebaugh in their article Trends in Global Gender Inequality pointed out that “the biggest success story for women involves tertiary education where, by the year 2000, women had eliminated the gap in post-secondary educational enrolments.” This was the case in Africa, where women were seen as simply responsible for taking care of the home while the men were to provide, especially financially hence, the community saw no relevance is educating the girl child. According to the UN sustainable development goals, 103 million youths lack literacy skills in the world and 60% of them are women. In terms of asset ownership, the male have 13% more asset wealth and 28% more landed property than the females, but isn’t the case in Senegal as women owns more in both categories. Professional students who are females or colored most times have to deal with what Carrie Yang term as “identity dissonance.”
Education is a form of learning that is necessary for the development of one’s personality, identity, physical and intellectual capabilities. Education also provides to the growth of a person through the enhancement of social and professional integration. Education can improve a person’s quality of life. Underprivileged adults and children have a chance to escape poverty. “It is a tool for the economic, social and cultural development of all population around the world. Education is a human right and should be accessible to everyone without discrimination. All children should be awarded the same opportunities to be able to build a future for themselves. Therefore they must and should be able to go to school. Each child have the right to benefit from a quality education that fits their needs.”(Humanium 2016).

Governments in developing countries should organize an economically and political stable environment, to be economically attractive (Maxfield, 1998 as cited in Richards & Gelleny, 2007). Other critics state governments are forced to cut expenditures in education and social programs. This phenomenon especially affects women (Ayres and McCalla, 1997, as cited in Richards & Gelleny, 2007). Since the public sector is one of the main employers of females, women are often the most disadvantaged by governmental efforts to cut expenditures in the public sector (Hemmati and Gardiner, 2004, as cited in Richards & Gelleny, 2007). As a result, women will become unemployed and unable to expanded education among themselves or their children. (Richards & Gelleny, 2007)

I have started with this remarkable quote to support my topic and how the women education is important for any community and nation. I have chosen to write about the women’s education rights in Afghanistan I believe that the education of women is necessary for any country’s development. In fact, women are the mothers, sisters and daughters and they deserve to be a part of the society. Also, Women should be treated the same as men, so they can be productive in their countries and contribute to its development. Women need to be independent and have their right to study and join schools and colleges. Actually, they can be effective citizens if they have enough support. Woman who can take an active part in the development process improve the economy power of the country raise the level of economic and for her family, can raise the level of personal income. Women need to have the basic knowledge, so they can deal with different life issues. They need to be educated, so they can be aware of different diseases and participate in the development of their country. Also, the lack of education for women can be a reason of social and economic problems. Education is a basic human right. Like all human rights, it is universal and inalienable—everyone, regardless of gender, religion, ethnicity or economic status, is entitled to it. While gender equality in education remains a crucial issue for many countries women still account for two-thirds of the world’s illiterate population.
