Winter Concert-Band
The winter concert was a great experience. I especially loved the program because it really showed a decadent design. It showed falling snow, different sized leaves, little cute berries in between the leaves, and right in the middle it stated, “Cedar Ridge Band Winter Concert”. The winter concert part was the biggest part of the entire program, it was there to indicate that the concert is the main focus.
The Symphonic Band went first. The music that they chose was Russian Christmas Music and A Christmas Flourish. I particularly liked A Christmas Flourish because it sounded very upbeat. I felt really excited when I heard it Clarinet was, I believe, my favorite part of the entire song. I could just clearly hear them with no problems. Also, percussion was very satisfying to listen to, as well as, watch. Everything flowed together so perfectly.

Russian Christmas Music was very subtle at first.
It started soft, but then it opened up with very elegant, and beautiful music. I loved the percussion the most in this whole piece because they really just matched with the music so well. I felt that if the percussion weren’t in this piece, it wouldn’t have told the story it was meant to tell. It wouldn’t have told us the amazing story as well as it did. The slowness in the music shows how serious the song can get, and the upbeat parts show the happiness of the piece. I just really liked Russian Christmas Music. The music made me feel something, it was just the most amazing thing I could hear.
Next was the Wind Symphony, they played the music Annabelle Lee and A Christmas Festival. I really enjoyed the piece Annabelle Lee. It started off very high pitched because of the flutes. The beauty of this piece was that it just really told a story, and it just blew me away. The trombones, tubas, and trumpets sounded the most beautiful to me. I really loved how they came together. I think I smiled through the whole piece, it was just so
extravagant. A Christmas Festival was the next song for the Wind Symphony. The music included a song that everyone knows. Deck the Hall was apart of this as well. That is one of my favorite songs in the Christmas category. It then slowed down to a beautiful ballad like feel. I really loved that part it was very soothing. There are several songs that we might know from this piece that they were doing. I just enjoyed this song very much, and I hope to always remember it. Lastly, the Wind Ensemble, they played the pieces Procession of the Nobles, La Procession Du Rocio, and Sleigh Ride. Procession of the Nobles was probably one of my least favorites. I didn’t really like how it sounded, but that’s just my opinion. I think they executed the music very well, but it was not one of my favorites. La Procession Du Rocio was fairly interesting to me. I felt like I had heard it before. I really enjoyed how bouncy, and bubbly it was. It started off so happy, and then it breaks down to a lovely slow, but upbeat, part. It was just wonderful. It really showed me something about band. It showed me band can really do amazing things. Sleigh Ride was the last song. The song was just lovely. I could tell everyone knew the lyrics and would probably be singing it in the crowd. I know I was. The crowd seemed very cheerful. I definitely enjoyed this piece of music. I really enjoyed the show, and I hope I can attend another concert sometime. The young women and gentlemen playing the music looked so elegant, and beautiful up there. I was very happy and enjoyed my time. My time was well spent.
I was impressed by the range of the pieces that were performed as they were from 18th century classical symphony arrangements to contemporary techno pieces. However, the pieces that moved me most were Mozart’s Molto Allegro, Oaken Sky by Chris Rogerson and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. In hindsight, I am surprised that the two pieces from the Classical Era had such an impact on me. Perhaps, “classical” pieces were what I expected to hear at a Symphony. Oaken Sky evoked the most imagery for me and the conductor’s introduction of the piece was perhaps partly responsible for my ability to go from the earth to the sky in my mind’s eye. Oaken Sky was definitely a pleasant surprise and very pleasing to all of my senses. I was fully engaged in body, mind and soul with Rogerson’s composition. Cielito Lindo was interesting and the soloist really enhanced the piece with a stellar performance. Warehouse Medicine caused an incongruent stirring in me; perhaps I was not prepared for electronics to be added to the symphony. Ravel’s composition, Le Tombeau de Couperin, was a moving piece, but did not engage my senses, only my intellect. This work essentially left me feeling confused and although I appreciated the description of the dedication of the work by the composer, this was my least favorite piece. The “CPCC” soloist, Juan Caljero’s, rendition of Cileito Lindo was mesmerizing. Charlotte
It is also the piece that had enough of an effect to make the evil man go away, in the film, Fantasia. My strongest reaction to this piece, is the warm and chilled feeling I get hearing it. The idea of developing “chilled” bones from music is amazing. I arrived at this certain place, by truly diving into the song. I really listened to it, and could hear the seriousness in the singer’s voice. I could hear and understand the passion that the musicians felt when they pressed the piano’s keyboards. The singing, along with the instruments complimenting, is astonishing. I caught myself listening to this piece during the interview, and I could imagine even an evil monster falling in love with this tune enough to turn good. I felt the drama and power in the singing, and the seriousness in the playing of the
Overall, I was very impressed by the concert and I feel that the rest of the audience was also impressed. The expectations for the members of the Chamber Orchestra are high and those were met, but I feel that the expectations for the choral group were not as high. My expectations for the choir were not very high and they were immensely exceeded. The level of talent in that group was something that I was really not expecting at all.
Elana Sanguigni April 18, 2016 Honors Music Term Paper. The Wind Ensemble and Concert Band reflect a rich history. The formation of the Concert and Wind Ensemble bands dates back to the Middle Ages and Medieval Times. The Concert Band and Wind Ensemble have evolved over the years, due in part to significant historical events, music combinations, individuals, and progress.
I thoroughly enjoyed this concert from beginning to end. The opening piece, “String Quartet in F Major, K 590”, was both soothing and moving with an engaging theme that followed through the piece. The sudden stops and starts with changes in theme built the suspense and pulled the listener in to a jaunty gallop through the second section. Also the bass tones in the back ground seem to be slightly off kilter with the violins, providing a complex texture and harmony that provides depth and poignancy to the music.
The concert I attended was the Liszt, Prokofiev, and Dvořák concert at the Chicago Symphony Center. Emmanuel Krivine is a French conductor who conducted the orchestra to play Liszt’s compositions Les Préludes, Symphonic Poem No. 3. Next was Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor, Op. 16 in the Andantino, Scherzo: Vivace, Moderato, Allegro tempestoso, the piano soloist was Russian pianist Denis Kozhukhin who was accompanied by The Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Lastly was Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 in G Major, Op. 88 was performed by The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the four movements played was, Allegro con Brio, Adagio, Allegretto grazioso, and Allegro MA non troppo.
I enjoyed this concert. It was my first real experience with jazz music. To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect, but I left satisfied that I attended. However, there was one thing I did not enjoy. The narrator between songs was not very effective and actually took away somewhat from the concert. He failed numerous times at trying to be humorous and rambled on. My favorite piece was 88 Basie Street. It gave me that easy and relaxed feeling. This piece started softer, and then seemed to pick up with more energy. With my lack of knowledge of Jazz music, I certainly enjoyed this piece the best. I learned how exciting and fun listening to jazz being played live can actually be. I found it very interesting. Like I said earlier, the only thing I would change to make the concert more effective would be to have the narrator speak less.
The first aspect of the music I recognized was the volume, or the dynamics. It ranged from forte during the climactic moments to mezzo piano during the calmer parts, but mostly remained in this range throughout the concert. There were also several instances of crescendo and decrescendo, which served to build up tension or slow the piece down, respectively.
One performance that stood out to me during the concert was a song called Sinfonia #3 by J. C. Bach (Wind Ensemble Concert program). The reason I enjoyed this song was because it was performed by nine saxophone players. I would say
It has a very nice combination of the woodwind and violin. The music goes slow for first three minutes and suddenly it goes fast with the sound of violin and slows down again with the melodious sound of the flute and violin and repeats again giving the feeling of nature and after eleven minutes it is in very high notes. And again, from the 14 minutes, begins the second movement with the melodious sound of violin followed by other instruments. This part is very sad and attractive part of the orchestra too. It feels tragedy and sad music. The music is slow and in low notes. The flute in the fourteen minute is so attaching and alluring. I felt like listening to it again and again. The third movement then begins from twenty-three minute which also feels sad music. It reminds me of the good old childhood days. After the thirty minutes comes the most powerful and weighty part that is the fourth movement. It ends comfortably in F major. Among the four symphonies by Johannes Brahms, I liked the Symphony no.3. And I would like to thank Mr. Madere for giving us with such assignments which help us relax and get free from our
On November 16th, 2013, I attended a concert choir, fall choral concert. This event took place on the Wheaton College Campus, in the Edman Chapel at 7:30 pm. The chapel was well-lit, with long pews for the audience to be seated. The concert began with the audience looking up into a balcony, where the ensemble stood in neat rows. They watched the conductor, who stood on a stage in front of the audience, waiting for their cue.
The second piece, Paratum Cor Meum, was a much shorter piece with very few lyrics. It was interesting to hear a piece by Haydn, since we had discussed this composer in class. I was impressed by the choir members’ ability to remember words in another language, and I enjoyed the sounds of the piano accompaniment.
...re was very interesting transitions between the variation, for example, string section plays the variation from low to high, when they reach the highest note, the brass family takes over and continue with the scale and make it more higher. Tremolo style was used in this piece, which is a quick ups and downs stroke mode. The music were very soothing and attracted the audience. Lastly, they end the piece with the same variations that was played at the beginning.
The final and twelfth piece was made up of excerpts from a longer work called Five Short Pieces for Clarinet and Bassoon. To me, maybe because the concert was beginning to get long or maybe because I did not have many notes over it, the last piece seems fairly similar throughout its movements, or “Short Pieces.” The first was an up-beat piece with a distinct melody. The clarinet and bassoon alternated, with the clarinet playing the higher notes. The second movement had a have complete feel to it. The two instruments played at the same time, close to it. The third movement was an impressive sounding mix of ups and downs. It seemed that the performers were working very hard and it sounded very complex.
I would agree that this piece is of good quality. I am impressed, after some continued research of this musical piece portrays a Russia fairytale, and is designed for ballet (The Firebird, 2016). Another thing that makes this piece have “good” quality is that it is something many people and myself would find enjoyable to listen to repeatedly.
