For many being able to push ones self above all odds to achieve the most difficult of tasks would seem impossible, yet for William E. Peck this is his lifestyle. He is a “Go-Getter”, a man with a strong drive and determination to finish any task regardless of its difficulty. As a war veteran William is left crippled without an arm, and for that is left challenged in the business world, as he cannot preform as well as many others who are abled bodied. William’s first challenge is that of obtaining a job with Alden (Cappy) Ricks. William’s determination is first shown when we states that he has come for the job that he has already been given before even saying a paragraph. He also informs Cappy that he had been turned down from two other jobs …show more content…
that he had previously applied to and was not going to take no for an answer in this case. From this Cappy see’s potential in Bill, and gives him the opportunity to prove himself to see if he is up for the tasks at hand. The only issue Bill faces now is Mr. Skinner and his disapproval towards giving Bill a job, as he wanted his friend Mr. Andrews to be given the job. Yet Bill being the persistent and determined man he is goes over his head and convinces Cappy that he is the man for the job, and wants the Shanghai position that is up for grabs. From observing Mr.
Peck it is already apparent that he represents the employee trying to climb the corporate ladder in order to achieve success. Yet many people in modern society don’t possess the determination to help climb the ladder, instead the fall breaks them and they find themselves running around in the infinite loop that is only destined to bring them so far. And once they have reached as far as the position will let them, they settle for that unable to climb higher and achieve greatness. Mr. Peck is the paragon of what a model employee looks like. Although his physical capability is not perfect, his mental determination and ability to follow through as he does throughout the story leads him to disprove all others and surpass …show more content…
expectations. During his employment William has great success in being able to sell lumber. He travels all around the west coast and parts of the mid west selling timber and is only met with success. Mr. Skinner even comments to Cappy that Williams performance surpassed all his expectations that he had previously held. Yet in order to truly be accepted and given his management position Mr. Cappy gives a daunting and basically impossible task for William to complete. For William he must purchase a blue vase and bring it to Mr. Cappy before he departs to Santa Barbara, little does William know that the task is nearly impossible as Mr. Cappy has stacked the odds completely against him. Yet he does not question his mission when he finds the challenge to be difficult, instead he perseveres to no end to eventually recover the vase and bring it to Mr. Cappy. “I’ve been trained not to question orders, even when they seem utterly foolish to me; I’ve been trained to obey them - on time, if possible, but if impossible, to obey them anyhow.” William’s words suggest a universal meaning to all people that possess this “Go-Getter” quality.
The world revolves around tasks being taken and executed correctly so that the next task can be handled. By not doing so progress is impeded, and business collapses on itself. Although this may seem that the ideal person is a cold, heartless man who does what there told and thinks nothing else of it is not necessarily true. These people strive for a cause and to achieve their own goals so that they can become successful in their line of work. This model can even help my own carrier as it tells one self to take life by the reins and make your own path, instead of letting it be carved out for you by someone else. It follows the simple leader and follower strategy, where people who choose to be leaders will have success and make their own success while the followers will simply feed off that. For myself I must come to the realization that in order to become a “Go-Getter” I must take better charge of my life and actions, and focus on the matter that will help me drive my life upwards towards
success.

There have been countless books, lectures, and and trainings, and retreats constructed around the idea of cultivating leadership in an individual. However, cultivating individuals’ ability to follow great leadership has received far less attention. Who are these people leading if each person within an organization is being trained to be a leader? The word follower has negative connotations, evoking the images of a weak, uncreative, milquetoast personality. However, Jimmy Collins, in his book, “Creative Followership: In the Shadow of Greatness”, suggests that the ability to be led brings as much creativity, consciousness, and indeed leadership to an organization or team as the leader himself.
The life of Boy Staunton is a testament to both the good and bad things that motivation and ambition can bring about. To these two traits, he owed his success, hi survival of the Great Depression, and the avoidance of filling his father’s footsteps in he small town of Deptford. However, these forces also brought about his death.
My philosophy of success, is me growing into the person I want to become and being comfortable with the choices I decide to make in life. Success is not something I can achieve overnight, it’s something I must plan for then proceed to working hard for it as well. Without hard work, there isn’t anything successful about the job I want to get done or the job I wish to get done. Doing anything without hard work and dedication, and expecting the best outcome is not success; it’s mediocrity. Being mediocre/ will only allow me or anyone else to have a ‘Victim’s Mindset.’
Nearly everyone has the desire to be successful in their lives, whether it be measured in the amount of wealth a man owns or the accomplishments he has made in his life. Therein lies the most common, the success in a man's profession. There are multiple approaches to this connotation of success where a wide range of techniques can be applied. One might think that the only way to reach a particular level of success is to take on a competitive nature and achieve that coveted position of number 1. However, being competitive does not necessarily insure that a person is ‘successful.’ They must be competent in their field to reach the top spot. An example of these two sides can be found within Arthur Miller’s Death of A Salesman using the characters Willy and Bernard.
This brings up another point on the negative side of having the desire to wanting to become successful. One must be willing to sacrifice the things of present wants and at certain times even things that are needs. To accumulate the knowledge needed to ac...
Persuading others of your vision requires knowledge and a clear strategy (Business Dictionary). Leadership is a natural quality that comes up as responsibility in exchange of having followers with, in return, the followers creating a leader. Concluding that leadership in general cannot be taught, as per the Trait Theory, we argue that it is different characteristics in different situations that result in good leadership. The Trait Theory points out that there is a certain type of person making a good leader, with the decisive factor being: having or not having distinctive qualities of being a leader. Despite that, being an effective leader still can be trained. External and internal influences impact the effectiveness and must be considered in order to succeed. Which leads us to the Behavioural Theory, thinking of what a good leader actually does. Kurt Lewin developed three leadership types such as the autocratic leader who is a maker, someone who makes decisions without consultation with others. Contrasting, the democratic leader who consults with others (a team, for example) before making a decision. Laissez-faire leaders, as the name already indicates, occasionally lets other people make decisions, doesn’t
To give my personal philosophy of success I would first have to define “success”. Success is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. My success philosophy that I plan on implementing from now on is accepting personal responsibility for the good and bad choices I make. There will be time when I need to focus on school and worry less about my free time. If I have a test to take I have to study for that test to get a good grade and continuous good grades will help me pass the course. I can’t depend on anyone else to do my work for me I’m personally responsible for completing my assignments and turning them in on time. When the weekend comes around and all I do is procrastinate by telling myself I’ll study later. The smart thing to do about this situation would be to think wise and use my time-management strategies. I’ll always have time for myself, so sacrificing some free time now is well worth it. This helps me to be a creator and not the victim about things and keeping up with the self-management strategy. The success strategies that I will use will help my learning style, self-management and self-responsibility. Most people believe success is just having lots of money, cars, and women but I believe success is an individual sport and I have to be ready to play because the outcome of my performance is based on the work I put into it.
Everybody tries to be successful, yet not every person achieves this objective. There are those of us who comprehend that success comes from our individual conduct and there are those that decline to comprehend this idea. Conduct radically influences one's individual success and there are a few elements to call attention to when discussing this. Successful people realize that the establishment of individual and expert achievement lies in understanding yourself, understanding others, and understanding the effect of individual conduct on others.
Find yourself and stay true to that task by progressively applying hard-working and stress-free habits, you do not want to be the god-why-does-this-work-never-stop type of person. Don’t follow into the steps of the mainstream version of “success” instead create your own that holds similar values, but with more happiness and less stress. The marketers and big businesses want us to believe and perceive that the ultimate key to success is a stack of hundred dollar bills, foreign cars, and enormous 4,000 square foot lavish houses. But what they do not understand is a couple of things-it is falsely advertised to seem amazing and appealing, and true success requires respect to yourself and others, appreciation to the people who have been with you since day one, integ...
Before any kind of business success can be reached, individuals must first understand what it is they are striving to achieve. This is the main reason why goal setting is so vital. In fact, every successful person in history was an obsessive goal-setter. They knew the importance of clearly stating what they wanted and then actively pursuing it.[2]
Regardless of age or major, every single successful person I have met throughout my life had the urge to direct their own lives. They were willing to accept primary responsibility for their own expectations and outcomes. Thus, they held themselves accountable and truly believed that their plans will turn out the way they want them to most of the time if they did the things that are necessary to make them become a reality. Instead of just saying what...
Some people accredit their success to fate, while others accredit it to their own achievements. I personally believe, good happens to people who work persistently for what they hunger. Being a successful entrepreneur is about sacrifice and hard-work. I assume I hold the qualities of a hard-worker. Scoring a twelve for action orientated was a shock. I find myself to be amply action orientated. I know whatever I require done, will not be completed unless I do it. I demand action in everyday challenges I am faced with. One structural characteristic of being an entrepreneur is being action-oriented. Willingness to utilize action and persistence are common traits of entrepreneurs.
Many don’t realize that the road to success isn’t so much a road as it is a winding,
