There has been an ongoing debate for many years in the United States concerning whether or not kids should get summer vacation or go to school twelve months a year. “It is a good thing for kids to get a summer break because school can be very stressful.” (Nair) A summer break is very important to families who look forward to spending time together on summer vacations and outings. Furthermore, many kids participate in traveling sports and other enrichment's such as Boy Scout and church camps. Summer breaks are needed and these are just a few of the reasons why.
The first reason why kids should have a summer break is because if they went to school all year just think about all the homework every night. The stress that comes with not getting a break would be overwhelming. According to Patti Neighmond “A little stress is a good thing, it can motivate students to be organized. But too much stress can backfire.”(Neighmond) Stress can also have physical effects. Patti Neighmond also wrote about a sixteen year old girl who is always sleepy and easily angered by her brother and sister, and often has to deal with painful headaches. The main source of this stress is

Family vacations are very important according to Susan Krauss Whitbourne, Ph.D. “Vacations have the potential to break into the stress cycle. We emerge from a successful vacation feeling ready to take on the world again.” (Whitbourne) It would be very difficult to plan one without a summer break. Year round school would also affect a teacher’s personal life. The teachers and their kids can never take a vacation. If they did, it would have to be very short. So therefore, if all families were not able to spend this quality time together, then they would not be getting the relaxation that they need and
A student at Ste. Genevieve High School even expressed how she needs the summer break to unwind and not have to care about studying for a class when school would return to session. Another reason students may oppose this change is due to the fact High School students may hold summer jobs to earn some spending money. In certain instances, the year-round calendar may prevent students from holding these jobs or holding them for extended periods of time. One more reason students may disapprove of year-round education is because of extracurricular activities, and how they will be changed or shifted. New teachers can be affected in many ways. Unlike teachers who work in traditional school districts, they do not have the long summer to prepare and acquaint themselves for the forthcoming school year. Along with preparing lessons and assignments, teachers would not be able to take their own vacations and prepare for school
Family vacations, pool memberships, and corn de-tasseling; these have been the experiences of traditional Midwestern summers. For centuries young American children have attended school during the winter months, during farming off seasons when their families could afford to be without them. Families have grown accustomed to a traditional school calendar that provides time for bonding throughout the year. Students have grown accustomed to an eight week break during the summer months where they are allowed to refresh their minds before returning for a new school year. Unfortunately, these traditional experiences and practices are now in jeopardy. In today’s race to improve student achievement, traditional school calendars have become a point of contention. Today more and more school districts and parents alike have begun to debate the pros and cons of an alternative school calendar.
Another significant reason is summer vacation needs to be longer. The primary reason for this is children need time to wind down and relax before they have to go back to school. For instance, during the summer children relax and prepare for school, if they...
...on what they have learned by attending more days in school but not getting burned out on a traditional nine month school schedule. A few short breaks allows the mind to rest but not forget everything they have worked hard to achieve educational greatness. American society will achieve great things if the education system takes a step in all schools operating on a year round calendar.
In the United States, most schools still use a ten-month calendar that was developed when our country’s students needed school off to help with harvesting (Palmer). Trimble Local Schools Superintendent Kim Jones says, “year-round schooling is the notion of getting away from the old agrarian calendar...which was formed up around the planting season. Students were out of school from April until harvest to work in the fields,” (qtd. in Hapka). Under the agrarian system, most United States students are in school for nine to ten months, and get a two- to three- month summer vacation. However, the United States is no longer an agricultural-based society, and students have no need to take a three-month-long, unnecessary, not to mention disruptive break during the summer months; instead, the United States should switch the school systems to a year-round calendar.
Back in the olden days, schools were originally put on a schedule in which students would spend the majority of the year in school, and 2-3 months off for summer break. The purpose of this was so that children could be home for the summer to help their parents run family farms. Today, due to progressive industrialization of farming, modernized farming equipment, and decrease in family farms, the need for children to be home during the summer to help run family farms is minute if not obsolete; because of this many schools across the United States have transitioned to year-round schooling (“Summer”). Contrary to belief, year round schooling does not usually mean more school days. Currently most year-round schools adhere to the 180 day school year. Instead of the traditional lengthy summer vacation, year-round schools distribute the 180 days throughout the entire year while allowing for shorter breaks. Common scheduling for year-round schools includes cycles of 2-3 months in school followed by 2-3 week breaks (“Research Spotlight...
School is usually a huge part of every child’s daily agenda. Teenagers in high school basically dedicate their entire day to school and homework. Students in grade 8 are similarly going through the same process as high school students. As students work 2 months after the Winter Break, some of them tend to start reducing their quality in their work. When we’re tired of doing school work for two straight months, why should we only receive a short March Break? Can’t the March Break just be one week longer, the same as the Winter Break? Students shouldn’t be limited to the amount of activities they can do during the March Break. Since the March Break is the last Break of the year, students clearly deserve two weeks of March Break rather than one. Furthermore, students should have the need to relax before the next three more months of school.
How many times has this happened to you; it’s six thirty on a Tuesday morning, your alarm has already gone off twice, your still laying in bed and your bus comes in twenty minutes. This is an everyday occurrence at my house. It is a proven statistic that the average high school student does not get enough sleep. While some experts like Dr. Lee Yanku say “It is not the schools starting time that is the problem as to why students don’t get enough sleep, it is because of facebook, myspace and cell phones” The truth behind it is that we can’t budget sports, homework and extracurricular activities into one day and still get nine hours of sleep. This is hurting student’s academic averages and needs to change. Changing the school time will help boost academic averages among students, and isn’t th...
For years, parents and educators have debated the advantages and disadvantages of the traditional school calendar, which has long summer vacations for all students. The longer you are away from school, the more you lose what you learned in the previous year. Studies have shown that children who know English as a second language benefit the most from year-round education because during the long summer break, they may not hear English for several months. Long summer breaks is a problem for traditional schools and the solution is to substitute traditional schools for year-round schools.
Although, year round school wouldn’t be just a bad thing. For example, shorter summer breaks may decrease the amount of learning students lose. It can also mean that students are less likely to have summer learning loss. Also, students test scores lower after summer break. Therefore, some people get free or reduced meals but in the summer they wouldn’t get that. Shorter breaks would cause a hard time to find childcare and to pay childcare.
Back in the early ages, the idea of year-round school would be thought as completely insane, because the farming families depended on their children to be home during harvest time. Now in modern times, the term year-round school is becoming more and more common in the United States of America. Slowly the schools are changing the way they teach, from giving the students a long three month break to a shorter one month break during the summer. The change of America’s high schools to the year-round schedule benefits both the schools and the students because they still get breaks throughout the school year, the children are less likely to forget information, the children would have more time with the teachers to learn, and the parents would not have to pay for childcare during the long summer break.
Do you ever get stressed over work from school or your job? Well, that is why breaks and vacations are so important. Stress is pressure or tension applied to a material object. When people have stress or are stressed, they do not need to worry about it, stress is a normal physical response to events that make you feel threatened or upset your balance in some way. Stress is your body’s way of protecting you. When working properly, it helps you stay focussed on what you're doing, keeps your energy flowing, and helps you be more aware of what is going on. Being stressed isn’t always a long lasting situation, it can easily be demolished by taking frequent breaks in between activities, events, assignments, and other stressful moments. Another way to relieve stress, is to have one or two days in the week that are dedicated to your relaxation. Getting stressed from school is extremely common. Children especially get stressed because their system can not handle too many things at once because they are still developing humans. Your health will deteriorate over time if we don't take a break from work, research concludes. Many people need the time and space away from what they experience every day in order to recognize harmful or self-destructive patterns in their life. Many parents, teachers, and adults complain that summer vacation for schools is such an amazing idea because, there is much knowledge loss throughout the break, however scientists have proven that to live a happy, satisfying, and successful life, everyone needs to give their mind a break from stress at school and work thereby proving that summer break is necessary.
For some families it is a tradition to go on a summer vacation every year if we have all year round school it could be more difficult for families to go on
The summer vacation students on a traditional schedule receive could be very beneficial since summer gives time for the students to attend camps or other activities that would allow them to learn. The camp may not be like the learning in school, but students would be able to get a different style of education while having fun. Lynn-nore Chittom and Jeff Klassen, two authors who wrote about year-round vs. traditional schooling say,
Also, a longer break would let them spend time with family members. Students would like a longer summer break to spend time with family members. Students could stay with other family members and cook out with them, play games with their family members, and talk with their family members as well.
