Why Power Corrupts: The Stanford Prison Experiment of 1971
Corruption of power is known to be inevitable. This tendency can be seen in those like the dictator Suharto, a former President of Indonesia, who allegedly stole $35 billion (Greenlees, 2008). Or, the corruption of Arnoldo Aleman, previous president of Nicaragua, who was known for his outrageous spending and vast amount of wealth, who was imprisoned and fined $10 million because of the supposed millions he stole (Dellios, 2002). Why is it that these alike world leaders are convicted of exploitation? Could these repeated acts of extortion and fraud be caused by the high honor that was stowed up them? The results of the experiment are reflected by infamous tyrannical and power-corrupted leaders in history (Shuttleworth). Zimbardo, a psychology professor at Stanford University, had always wondered why powerful leaders throughout history were often known to be corrupt. In the hopes to find the answer, he created the idea of an experiment where subjects would play the parts of prison guards and prisoners, hopefully emulating powerful societal roles and the behavior that becomes of it. As Zimbardo and his team built a set that imitated a jail house in the Psychology Department basement of the university, a total of 24 “healthy” and “intelligent” middle-class students volunteered to be a part of the experiment, each earning $15 a day. They were, at random, assigned to either a role of a guard or a prisoner. The set of mock guards were given the typical police officer uniforms: clothed from head to toe in khaki, reflective sunglasses, and even clubs that were to be used as weapons. This freedom that the guards were given and the isolation that was put upon the prisoners swiftly turned negative, proving the entirety of the experiment. Only on the second night of the experiment, prisoners rebelled against the vigorous guards and riots broke out. Prisoners cursed the guards’ names and harass them, barricaded their beds on the doors, and removed their stocking caps and dresses. This, of course, angered the guards. Backup was called as the night shift guards acknowledged a fire extinguisher and shot a “skin-chilling” dose of carbon dioxide towards the prisoners. They broke into individual jail cells, stripped the prisoners of their dresses, and forced many into solitary confinement. Zimbardo and the rest of his team were caught off guard at this unexpected turn of events. The guards wittily came up with a solution for this outbreak of anger: they would, instead of using physical tactics to control the prisoners, they would utilize psychological strategies. The guards quickly created a system that allowed the well-behaved prisoners to enter the newly-formed “privilege cell,” and were allowed to eat special food in front of the other starving prisoners

The Implications of the Stanford Prison Experiment In 1971 Dr Philip Zimbardo conducted an experiment in the basement of Stanford University. This involved imprisoning nine volunteers in a mock up of Stanford prison, which was policed by nine guards (more volunteers). These guards had complete control over the prisoners. They could do anything to the prisoners, but use physical violence.
A local newspaper ad reached out for volunteers to participate in a Psychological study, created by Philip G. Zimbardo and his research team, which sounded interesting for many individuals. Was it the best option to follow through with it? Volunteers were given a promise of being paid fifteen dollars a day of the study. Multiple members probably considered this a once in a life time event that could result in quick, easy money. Many may have heard about the Stanford Prison Experiment, but may not have been aware of the scars that it left upon the participants. Taking a deeper look into the study and the impacted outcomes on individuals will be elaborated on (Stanford Prison Experiment).
Every participant came from a relatively good background, with a college education, a clean legal record, and strong community ties because Zimbardo hypothesized that a good person could perform evil acts if they were given the opportunity. In this study Zimbardo chose 21 participants from a pool of 75, all male college students, screened prior for mental illness, and paid $15 per day. He then gave roles. One being a prisoner and the other being a prison guard, there were 3 guards per 8 hour shift, and 9 total prisoners. Shortly after the prisoners were arrested from their homes they were taken to the local police station, booked, processed, given proper prison attire and issued numbers for identification. Before the study, Zimbardo concocted a prison setting in the basement of a Stanford building. It was as authentic as possible to the barred doors and plain white walls. The guards were also given proper guard attire minus guns. Shortly after starting the experiment the guards and prisoners starting naturally assuming their roles, Zimbardo had intended on the experiment lasting a fortnight. Within 36 hours one prisoner had to be released due to erratic behavior. This may have stemmed from the sadistic nature the guards had adopted rather quickly, dehumanizing the prisoners through verbal, physical, and mental abuse. The prisoners also assumed their own roles rather efficiently as well. They started to rat on the other prisoners, told stories to each other about the guards, and placated the orders from the guards. After deindividuaiton occurred from the prisoners it was not long the experiment completely broke down ethically. A group of researchers, headed by Stanford University psychologist Philip G. One inmate suffered from a physical and emotional breakdown. The conditions became so severe that he was released. Zimbardo later stated that, “we did so reluctantly because we believed that he was trying to ‘con’ us.” Clearly Zimbardo was overreacting and should have seen that his actions and choice of experimentation caused the man to spiral out of control. By day 4, a rumor was going around that they newly sprung inmate was planning another revolt. As a result, they moved the entire experiment to another floor of the psychology building, and yet again another inmate suffered a breakdown. Soon after, he was released, and over the next two days, two more inmates would do the likewise. A final example of the effects of this experiment is shown when a fifth inmate is released. This time, the man developed a psychosomatic rash over is entire body. These are usually caused or aggravated by a mental factor such as internal conflict or stress, similar to all of the conditions faced inside the mock prison. After the fifth grueling day, Zimbardo finally thought his experiment was a success. The events inside the prison walls were occurring just as Zimbardo had planned. This experiment gathered twenty-one young men and assigned half of them to be “prisoners” and the other half to be “guards”. Simply put, the point of the experiment was to simulate a prison and observe how the setting and the given roles affected the behavior of the young men. The men who were given the roles of guard were given a position of authority and acted accordingly. This alone strongly influenced the behavior of both the guards and the prisoners. The guards had a sense of entitlement, control, and power, while the prisoners had a feeling of resentment and rebellion. Social pressure also played a crucial role in the experiment. Many of the guards began to exploit their power by abusing, brutalizing, and dehumanizing the prisoners. Some of the other guards felt wrong about this abuse, but did nothing to put an end to it. Finally, the situation and setting of the experiment immensely altered the conduct of both the prisoners and guards. The setting of being in a prison caused many of the volunteers to act in ways that they may have normally not. Even though the setting of being in a prison was essentially pretend, the volunteers accepted the roles they were given and acted as if it was all a reality.
