Many people cringe when they hear it; Vegan. But why has did it become the dirty word it is today. Vegan-ism gets a pretty bad reputation in today’s society. Seen as a hipster trend for pretentious snobs, many people would never in a million years consider the vegan lifestyle and give up delicious meat and cheese. However, this trend may have some great benefits that people often overlook. Theres many reasons people go vegan today; whether its because of a love for animals, their health, or because of the unsustainibility the diet is to the environment. One of the biggest reasons people go vegan is because of the cruelty farm animals suffer from on meat and dairy farms. 9 billion farm animals are slaughtered each year; 99% of those farm animals are raised in terrible conditions on factory farms. It is a common misconception that meat is necessary to a human’s health. However, the human body’s biology suggests that we are 100% herbivore. Humans normally do not have fangs, or claws, or the physiological thirst for the blood of our kill. People can get all the rich nutrients they need in other plant-based foods without the health risks of eating meat. In fact, humans only began eating meat well after evolving into what we are today. Early humans had diets very much like other primates, consisting of a largely plant-based diet because our hands are perfect for grabbing and picking fruits and vegetables. Our bodies have never fully adapted to it a meat-eating diet either. To this day, people who eat a meat inclusive diet are at a higher risk of heart disease, high cholesterol, cancer, diabetes, clogged arteries and other problems that no other meat-eating animal would ever have.
