Introduction/Problem How many times have you tossed a small gum wrapper out the window while driving down the road? Almost all of us can admit to having thrown some type of trash on the ground at least once before. While throwing out a gum wrapper may not be as drastic as throwing out a bag filled with trash, these minor items we think are no big deal are part of the reason littering has become such an out of control problem. So many of us think that throwing one small thing out may not be such a big deal. However, if everyone in the world threw out one small thing, that would already be seven billion pieces of trash in our environment. Due to the bad habits humans have unfortunately formed, littering has become a widespread problem; however, …show more content…
The estimated cost of litter pickup is thirty cents per piece of trash, and with one mile of highway containing about sixteen thousand pieces of trash, that is already four thousand eight hundred dollars spent on litter pickup (“NCDPS”). Why should we allow so much of our hard earned money to be used when we could just avoid littering altogether and have extra money in our pocket?
Although littering may not always be intentional, sixty percent of pedestrians and forty percent of motorist deliberately do it (“NCDPS”). Because of all the littering being done, there is an island of trash two times the size of Texas floating in the Pacific Ocean (Cruice-Barnett). This enormous amount of trash damages our environment more and more each day. When looking at it from that perspective, it is much easier to understand exactly how large of a problem littering actually is.

Some of the solutions for littering are completely free of cost and take little to no effort. The easiest (and most obvious) solution is to set a good example by not littering (Cathy). If more and more people take it upon themselves not to litter, others will follow the pattern. Another cost-free solution that you and your family can partake in is cleaning up litter around your house once a week (Cathy). By everyone keeping clean just a small portion of their community, like their yard, the entire community will increase in cleanliness without one or two people having to do it all. As for public places that no one is solely responsible for, prisoners should be taken out more to do community service by helping clean litter on side of highways, public buildings, and anywhere else in the community that may need cleaning. A few other solutions include keeping a small bag for trash in your car that can be emptied out weekly and asking friends and neighbors to keep their own property clean (Cathy). Finding out how you can plant and maintain flowers along curbs or sidewalks is another way to make the temptation of littering a little less. People litter less when areas look more appealing
She suggests that Americans should reduce their overconsumption of such commodities since they are overburdening the non-biodegradable waste load in the garbage collection facilities. It is surprising to note that every Americans disposes more than four pounds of trash on a daily basis (Royte, 2005).
In Indianapolis, I see people toss trash out of their car, throw trash onto the ground, and have seen somebody aim for a garbage can, noticed that they missed it, and just left it on the ground. One person throwing garbage on the ground might not think much of it, however, when that piece trash collects other trash, they start to build up and soon form big loads of junk. For example, I am sure people never supposed that if they littered, that their trash would eventually end up in some kind of body of water. Typically, no one thinks about it until they actually go to a sea or lake and see how disgusting it looks because of the people who were too lazy to throw their garbage away. To worsen matters, littering has become very mutual, which must be stopped because in most instances, trash is not disposed of appropriately, which eventually leads to innocent individuals having to spend money on cleaning up. Some people know about the littering in Indianapolis, but most do not care, and that is only because they are not aware of the consequences it can bring or the way it appears to others. For the ones who do recognize it needs to spread the news around so there can be a solution.
The world would be a much better place if people who litter are nonexistent. As Captain Tidy and Neatness man go around Miami in outlandish costumes searching for trash in addition to people who do not dispose of it properly. The pair of men try to change the world and make it cleaner but it does nothing but make them look crazy and not taken seriously. Dave Barry’s short story “A Couple Of Really Neat Guys” is a low level comedy that uses Comic Characters and hyperbole to convey the idea that it is wrong to leave trash everywhere in the envirment a person lives.
We always hear "do not litter!" or "throw your litter in the bins", maybe some of you bored to hear that yet we still do not throw it in the correct place. Litter is a serious habit problem to just throw away objects on the ground or leave them lying on the ground, instead of putting them in the garbage can. In Indonesia, the amount of litter is 175.000 ton/day and this is increasing every day. But we don't have to see that far, just look around us, our campus, Sanata Dharma University is still facing the littering problems. Each day, although there are various spots of bins and it is never full yet there are many litters lying in the floor, you can see the student hall as the evidence that even though it has 10 spots of bins, we still find people throwing their litter everywhere.
If everyone recycled think of how much more space there would be in landfills across the world. There is only so much room on this earth and we are using a huge portion of it for our trash. Clearlake, California alone on a busy day can bring in 80,000 pounds of trash to the local dump. I know this because I work at the local dump in Mckinleyville. I also see a lot of people that throw away their recycling for the simple reason of being too lazy to sort it. I watch bag after of bag of plastic, aluminum, and glass get thrown into the bin which we haul straight to a landfill in Anderson, California. If everyone in Mckinleyville recycled there plastic, aluminum and glass they could save thousands of pounds a day from going to the landfill. I think people are not informed that waste is a big problem in this world. But in fact conservation is an issue, and resources and energy aren't too plentiful. Someday these resources are going to run out. But the more we recycle the longer we can make these resources last.
Littering is like a cause and effect when its saw or done others will do the same. In the essay “A Couple Of Really Neat Guys” Dave Barry uses comedy to explain the point of not to litter. He uses hyperbole and one liners to explain his opinion on littering. Littering is something Dave Barry feels very strong for and does not appreciate. So, instead of starting a debate or argument he uses comedy to effectively show his point. Using hyperbole and one liners/puns to show his point that littering is bad and people should throw their trash away.
Did you ever look outside your window and see the beauty of the Earth? People should stop littering because it can cause damage to animals, animals get sick and eventually die, the trash affects the animal's body. It is proven that animals get hurt because we are bad at throwing trash in the garbage can. Additionally littering is bad because animals get hurt and sick from the trash. Furthermore owners of their pets do not want to them to get hurt. Some owners don’t care about their pets and don’t care if they get hurt or sick. But I believe every owner should be concerned about littering.
According to Statistic Brain, about 75% of people admitting to having littered within the last five years. In fact, the average number of paces that a person will hold a piece of trash before littering is a measly 12 paces, with up to 50% of all litter composing of discarded cigarette butts. These statistics show that this “trivial” issue is far more prevalent than one would think. This “trivial” issue is a cause of many reasons for us, as citizens on this planet, to start paying attention, and to deal with this problem before it balloons to the point where we cannot deal with anymore. Littering causes many adverse effects to the environment and to our daily lives, in being hazardous to wildlife, taking away from the local environment, and causing many ill effects on people and
Cluttered trash filled parks, waste filled rivers, and town sized landfills and that is what awaits the people of earth if nothing is done to aid in the efforts to keep the world clean and recycling is one best and most beneficial ways to do just that. The truth is a frightening thing however it is true if we don’t act to improve our habits soon it might just be a reality, recycling should be mandatory for all households in order to prevent this trash filled grim future.
Do you know what ruins the earth. Pollution! So many people think it is a good idea to just throw things on the ground and think. “Oh nothing's gonna happen if I throw this bag of Cheetos on the ground outside”. Well they are wrong. They are making life worse for the animals out there. I am giving four reasons why you should not litter.
Have you ever wonder what can you do about the bottles and cans you find around you? People that doesn?t care about the world being clean is littering the place. It makes things very difficult to put up for. Recycling cans and bottles can help save the earth form waste and trash buildup and can make new things. I think that recycling should be mandatory and there should be recycling cans in various locations at school and everywhere else.
Disposable containers create unsightly neighborhoods and countryside. While driving this weekend, I counted 28 Dr. Pepper bottles and 14 Diet Coke cans in a 2½-mile span of roadway. Our neighborhoods and countryside are being plagued daily by enormous amounts of empty bottles and cans. People don't think twice about pitching their empties out of the car window. An uncaring attitude is taking over society. Although Coca-Cola seems to be reaping the benefits of our fast-paced, thirsty society, our beautiful land is not so lucky. On Saturdays, I see Boy Scout Troop 99 picking up trash using separate sacks for the bottles and the cans. By noon, their total bottle and can collection for a one-mile radius generally fills about 17 large garbage bags. Obviously, this is proof that these disposable bottles and cans are destroying the beauty of our neighborhoods. Another example I have encountered is the ugliness presented on Highway 66 between Luther and Wellston. Again, it is common to see paper sacks full of bottles and cans thrown to the side of the road. Subsequently, the bottles break in pieces over the side of the highway, threatening flat tires for the motorists. Playgrounds are demolished by cans left behind after picnics on Sunday afternoons. Parks have been invaded by party groups too lazy to hit the trash cans. Instead, glass is broken and left behind for others to deal with. In addition to blemishing our neighborhoods and countrysides, disposable bottles and cans cause hazards to the wildlife.
Do you hate seeing litter on the streets, or seeing and smelling heaps of garbage sitting, and rotting away? Humans recycling more will help to reduce this. We throw many things that can be recycled. Recycling glass, plastics, paper, and metals will reduce solid waste dumped into the ecosystem daily. “96 percent of U.S. plastic, and 50 percent of its paper, goes into landfills. Mexico, not exactly a bastion of environmental awareness, recycles more glass than the U.S.” (Alice Horrigan 1). That’s 96 percent of the millions of tons of plastic, which will outlive most of us in a landfill that we could recycle and keep it out of our landfill. Paper is made from trees, if we recycle it, we can decrease our rate of ugly deforestation and the destruction of animal habitats. When paper gets to the landfill, it is guaranteed to get wet. The wetness and decomposition of paper atracts mold spores, which produce an odor and are potentially bad for your health. Also k...
While walking through the park last Sunday, I observed a shocking scene. There are two cans: one for recycling and one for trash. The recycling receptacle had only an empty Dr. Pepper can and a few used Ozarka water bottles. On the other hand, the trash can had a plethora of half eaten meals, wrappers, banana peels and disgustingly even bottles, cans, newspapers and plastics that could have been recycled. Because people do not understand or do not care to understand about conserving our resources, many reusable items are being put in landfills when recycling these items could help save the environment.
...mproper way of disposing of waste and other materials. Littering not only impacts our environment but also many animals. Even though many people see littering being done they do not do anything to prevent this. One thing that may occur is that many of these wastes that are improperly disposed of finds its way to the ocean or other places. This is something that can be very dangerous for many aquatic creatures because they could think that it is food and this would cause them to choke on it and eventually die. A lot of people litter because they really have no idea of the damage that they are causing our environment. Another reason why people do this is because they are too lazy to dispose the materials into a proper trash can. Most of the litter that is being thrown on the ground eventually goes and finds its way into the sewers and goes into the oceans and lakes.
