Social Media Being Unsafe Social media is starting to become a global addiction. Since 2010, the amount of social media users has increased from 0.97 billion people to 2.22 billion people (Statista 2016), and that number is expected to keep rising. The first social media website was called “six degrees”, it was a blogging site that was created in 1997. Ever since then, there have been many websites that help us communicate with others. Currently in 2016, there are over 200 social media sites that are still open to the public. However, the most popular ones are Facebook and Youtube with over a billion users each, and research proves that the average amount of time spent on social media is 3.2 hours and some teenagers even use it for a whopping …show more content…
than playing outside with their friends or family. Even though, there are a lot of people who use social media and also go outside, the time being spent on social media deducts the time being spent playing outside. Research proves that some teens spend less than an hour outside compared to the 2-3 hours spent on social media per day (Clare 2009). Also, when someone is outside, they usually take a lot of pictures or selfies (when a person takes photos of themselves using the front camera of a phone) and they post it on Snapchat, Twitter or Instagram. Adding on to this, since people spend more time on social media compared to playing outside, it can ruin people's relationship with each other. For example: when two friends are hanging out, instead of talking to one another they will probably be on their friends talking to other people. Last of all, since people are on social media for a long time, it can affect a person's mental health. Research states that the more time on social media can cause emotional suppression, lack of attention span, a decline in intellectual abilities, stress, fatigue, and worst of all an addiction that will be hard to get rid of (Perov 2014). Not only can this affect your mental health it can also affect your health physically. For example: with all that screen time you can ruin your …show more content…
Also, people (usually teenagers) end up posting things that reveal too much about them exposing them to child predators and etc. What we mean by “there is more treats on the internet” is that since the amount of internet users is rising, meaning that there are more people around the world using social media and not everyone will be a genuine person, who is nice to everyone and respects everyone's privacy, there will be people with fake personalities and accounts. These fake accounts can be made by anyone who has access to the internet. It can be used to act like a different gender or different age,so he/she can appeal to a specific person or a group of people. These fake accounts can also be used to get private information from someone else like their phone number, address, email and more. For example: the most common situation is when a boy tries to appeal to a girl. The boy will make a fake account with a pretended name, false age, and a picture off of Google for their profile picture, just so the girl will talk to the boy. When a teen exposes her/himself on their social media, this can result in treats such as child predators, hackers, spam mail, viruses, spyware etc (Tray 2012). When a teen posts a picture that reveals to much of their body, it will get a lot of attention from your friends. But, not only does your
I also disagree with this statement because I believe that social media is actually addicting, and provokes a feeling of sadness which is also mentally unhealthy. In Walton's research article she addresses a study found a few years ago from Swansea University, and interprets how they found that people experienced the psychological symptoms of withdrawal when they stopped using social media. To get more into depth, what she implies is that the more we consume social media, the more it reduces our happiness when we stop using it leaving us in a state of social isolation. According to an information, resource and solution center for veterans called Make the Connection social, withdrawal and isolation can cause victims difficulty in accomplishing regular tasks. The effects of this symptom include relationship problems, loneliness, drug or alcohol abuse and trouble sleeping. Which are all either psychological or physical affects. This is another way social media not only psychologically but physically affects us, and why we should spend less time on
Being involved socially online can open many doors to hackers and scammers. Posting too much information online can be a way for scammers to steal information.
To begin with, social media has been proven to be a dangerous addiction due to the many negative side effects like: sleep deprivation, and self-esteem problems. Most of the adult American population is connected to some sort of social media site, and they have joined the banned wagon of people whom check their social media accounts at least five times a day. Using social media to often can be time consuming and essentially causes sleep deprivation because the user stays up late on social media. Since social media has grown in popularity many have began to believe that social media is a life necessity. It is viewed by many as a daily necessity like brushing our teeth, or yet as important as eating. People whom are constantly on social media have been linked to develop self-esteem problems because they are so consumed on pretending and portraying this image of a person they are not. Social media has became such an addiction that many people wake up and the first thing they do is...
Some of the effects of using social media can be depression, addiction, cyberbullying, and exposure to inappropriate content. One of the most concerning effects of social media is depression. When teens create an online identity, they often display an unauthentic self. This “other” self is often what the person wants to be. Having to jump from the online self to the real self can often lead to depression.
allowed people to create a profile and share everything about themselves to the whole world. When social sites first were developed, they only linked people by their name and address. Since sites such as Xanga, Tagged, and Facebook were gaining so much popularity, more users were logging on, and online predators are becoming a problem. These sites are so easy, that it is not that hard for predators to “pose” as another person and trick young adults. It is extremely difficult to differentiate the real person that you are looking for from a fake.
In today’s society, much advancement has been made throughout the universe. However, one that seems to stand out in particular is the use of social media. Social media has both positive and negative effects on society. This advancement has led to a difference in communication to everyone by reconnecting with others, or even informing the public nationwide through televisions such as the news or talk shows. However, is social media safe to use? Social media has a great impact on everyone in society. While allowing your children or teenagers to engage in social media a few things to consider are the risks of youth using social media, what age is too young, and also how social media is useful in some cases. Children participate in cyber bullying now and even find themselves involved in bad habits, such as sexting (Schurgin O’Keefe). According to a recent poll conducted, over 22 percent of teenagers log onto their social media site more than ten times a day (Schurgin O’Keefe). Not everything is negative towards social media, but there are precautions that need to be taken when there is the youth involved.
... middle of paper ... ... Social media can also affect social health; for example, it can lead to cyber bullying. Then that teen will not want to attend school because that teen is living on constant fear of being bullied. Most dangerous of all, it can give away your identity.
It can distract you from your family, work, and school work. It can distract you from special events and moments with your family. You can be so caught up in your sites you’re missing the most important events of your life. It can become an easy distraction from work and school work. Some people may just need to take a ‘break’ and then can get too caught up on social media that they will fail to return to their work. “Many companies have blocked social networks on their office Internet as addicted employees can distract themselves on such sites, instead of focusing on work” (Ta). For those that are in school, grades can begin to drop. Students procrastinate and will choose social media over writing that paper, doing their homework, or studying for a test. Spending too much time on social media can distract you from a certain task. Motivation slowly decreases the more social media is being used. Another big thing that social media distracts people from today is driving. Some people just can’t wait to post a status that they do it while driving. While doing this, it can cause many accidents. It is slowly taking over our
With many ways to access social media it allows for constant exposure to information “that contribute to a general communication overload as individuals are bombarded simultaneously with information from multiple electronic channels, which has been associated with psychological distress” (Vannucci qtd.). An example of this overload would be having multiple social media apps on a smartphone such as notifications from Instagram and Snapchat will come at varying times, but the significance is having more than one source of information because “Pew Research Center found that 71% of teens use more than one social network” (Lenhart 1). that will enable more overstimulation because the person will be browsing multiple apps throughout the day. Is related to Robson’s article about overstimulation this correlating effect all point to overuse of social media and technology devices. Social media makes it seem that everything you read or see is beneficial because people think more information retained the better off they will be.
In 2017, there were a reported 2.8 billion people who used social media, which makes up about 40% of the world’s population. These statistics can be broken down further by individual social media sites: Facebook had a reported 1.9 billion users, Youtube had 1 billion, and Instagram had 600 million.
Social media has token a huge step from when it first started. The more the years go by there are new trends and new technology that continues to grow. As the newer technology comes out, the younger the kids are getting their hands on the new gadgets. As a result our younger generation begins to get into the internet having their own accounts to multiple social media websites. Kids don’t realize what they can get themselves into when they get an account, it can lead them to older people (child molesters, Perverts, ect.). Since 2011, teen Twitter use has grown significantly from 16% to 24% (Pew Internet & American Life Project, 2013). These social media accounts can make it easier to cyber bully there victim. Most importantly it takes away their
According to the article, “10 Ways Social Media Affects Our Mental Problems,” Degreed claim that social media make us restless by “two-thirds admitted to having difficulty relaxing when unable to use their social media accounts.” Teenagers are always tired when they have to stay up late at night to catch up with all the news feed on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter that make them have no energy to go on the next day. Based on the newspaper, “Excessive Social Media Use Harms Children’s Mental Health,” by the Telegraph shows that “children who go on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for more than three hours a day are more likely to have mental health problems.” Social media can lead to bullying that affects teenagers mental health issue and being stressed. Social media have now taken a part of human life and some are addicted to the point where they can’t even live without
Social media has nothing but negative effects on people’s minds. Social networking can become very addicting and people can get wrapped up in the drama and excitement of the cyber world. It would only improve our society today if social media never existed to our knowledge. Our society today feels so connected with social media that it interferes with our lives making every task even harder with the temptations.
I believe that the key to safe and secure social media begins with proper use. Illegal and highly discouraged activities should not be tolerated and consequences should be mandatory. In terms of social media use in teens and young adults, it is important for parents to teach their children what acceptable use of computers and social media is so that they can understand the potential danger and all minors should be monitored while using the Internet to ensure safe usage is being followed. Regardless of age, all users of social media should think twice before clicking the post button about what unintended consequences that post could have.
There are about one and a half billion users of social media worldwide. It can be used to meet new people, find old friends, chat the day away, join interest groups, or even to share pictures. Social networks were mostly created so people could meet and find new friends. What most users of social media don't know, are the dangers of using social media. One example is when you meet a person online, because they are not always who they say they are. If someone is not who you may think they are, who could they be? They can be a stalker or a person that wants to steal your identity; which could be done easily thanks to new developments of new technology. Also thanks to new technology it is now easier for people using your information to track you. Posting personal information can risk your family and friends lives. Social media can be used as a weapon against you. It can even lead to a kidnapping, or even someone's death. Many people use social media to help to waste time, but could also become an unhealthy addiction. Also social media can damage your future. When you are a teen you tend to post pretty much anything you want. This is dangerous because you can post too much personal information. What most teens don't realize is that what they do on social media now can affect them for the rest of their life. It can even come back to haunt you in the future. Social media is dangerous because it makes it easier to be stalked, identity theft to happen, kidnappings and murders, and also can ruin your future.
