I find that society definitely takes things to the extreme when it comes to trying to be beautiful. While not everyone may do it, a large amount of both men and women take things too far while trying to become “fit” or “pretty”. “Men desperately want to look like adonis, because they constantly see the “ideal,” steroid-boosted bodies of actors and models.” (Cloud, 49). In 1999, American men spent more than four billion dollars on home exercise equipment and gym memberships, and in 1996, men in total had around 700,000 cosmetic procedures done (Cloud, 49). These numbers show that a large amount of men are unsatisfied with their bodies, and go to drastic lengths to achieve what the media is showing. This is so much more extreme than what a normal person would do, because most would never want to have surgery unless it were absolutely necessary. Another extreme option that a many men take is to use steroids. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, “Teenagers in even larger numbers are buying legal but lightly regulated food supplements, some with dangerous side effects.” (Cloud, 49). Even young children are attempting to change how they look in a very dangerous way, all while knowing the (sometimes permanent) side effects that such supplements have on their bodies. Women are not exempt from this phenomenon of going to extreme lengths to be what society considers perfect. A very common idea in other countries is that “Few people are blessed by nature and circumstance with the Golden Mean proportions that seem to be universally appreciated. Thus, in the end, it is more democratic to think of beauty or attractiveness as an attribute that one can acquire.” (Franke-Ruta, 64).
