The profession of child and youth care worker is something that I am very interested in becoming as it is a job that is both accomplishing and hardworking. Personally, it was difficult for me to decide what I wanted to do with my future but I know I wanted to help people. I constantly changed my mind when it came to picking a profession. I shifted from paramedic, to nurse, to vet technician, to therapist, and lastly social worker. I came to the conclusion that I wanted to work with youth as well as help counsel troubled youth who have become strayed from society. While looking through college programs and doing research, the child and youth care profession seemed to be the perfect fit for me. That being said, my goal is to work at a group home, specifically The Covenant House. …show more content…

The strengths that I bring to the organization is that I have great listening and interpersonal skills. I also know a great deal about different cultures which can be helpful when working with either newcomers or youth of different diversities. Some of the concerns I have is knowing how to properly handle an intervention crisis and how to professionally asses a youth in
My choice to become a part of the childcare profession was not just made casually. This decision was the result of a thought process about what I wanted to do with my life. My current job as a Behavioral Intervention Specialist for Bakersfield City School District has motivated me to pursue my masters in social work. Working with troubled students on a daily basis has allowed me to see the great need for social workers at schools. Many students are not successful in school due to their emotional and social issues in their daily lives. I want to be a professional social worker so I can better understand behavior, trauma, and learn of more ways to assist the students at my school. I truly feel The Master of Social Work (MSW) program will prepare me to help create that change in the schools that is desperately needed.
Imagine for a moment that you are sitting in a court room in a custody battle. The judge has ruled for the child to go with their mother, but you can tell by the look on the child’s face that this is the worst thing that could happen. I desire to be that person for the child and to have their best interest in mind. Every child deserves some structure in their life and to be with people whom love them. Sometimes the best thing which can be the hardest is for them to be separated from their parents.
My motivation to be a social worker initially came up by my aunt. Since childhood, I realized that my aunt, a Macanese, was a deaf. Even though our conversation relied on a pen and pieces of paper, we had tight relationship. Unfortunately, my aunt split from his husband spontaneously due to my uncle’s adultery. After that, aunt lost her interest in everything, even making communication with their children. She persistently felt anxious and got hallucination lately. When I was in high school, my aunt was diagnosed as suffering from depression, a seriously one. For quite a long period, my mother stayed at Macau to accompany with my aunt. At that time, I wrote many letters to her on the grounds that I believed words could deliver positive energy. Subsequently, my letters seemed to cut ice with my aunt. She told me that reading my letters could ease her anxiety and enhanced her to stay positive in a day.

The main reason I chose the social work profession, manifested early within my stages of childhood. The importance of giving to and caring for those in need, were deeply embedded in my very soul. Being reared by my grandmother, a nurse and by my teenage mother, a psychology student, I was exposed constantly to acts of kindness and generosity. As a result to my empathetic personality, I was welcomed into many social and ethnic groups, not commonly open to a young gay black male. In these younger years with the assistance of my parents, my love for others allowed me to help other teenagers in crisis, often providing shelter, advice, monetary assistance and a listening
My interest persisted and grew as I began to see how my efforts had the ability to improve the lives of people around me. I first noticed this on a personal level as friends would come to me for advice or for me to listen to their struggles and provide comfort. No matter how mundane, horrific, unique, or common the story was, I listened to them in a genuine and non-judgmental manner. I truly enjoyed hearing people’s stories and providing comfort and advice when needed. These moments helped me realize the power of simply being there for someone, and it increased my interest of pursuing a career where I can support those who need it most. I want to become a social worker so I can provide direction to those who may not be able to get it from other sources, just like I have done for various people throughout my life.
Currently, I work at the Foster Knox Day Care here at UCM. Being a Social Work major has enhanced my love of helping children. After taking Human Behavior, I can cue in what is going on in the developmental stage of the child life. Now I understand that a two-year may not say No to be defiant. Being able to interact with children has made me more aware that I want to work with children as a social worker.
My passion to become a social worker began when I was pursuing an undergraduate degree. From a young age because of my compassion and empathetic nature, I knew that I wanted to work inside the human service field. I wanted to use my personal characteristics to improve individual’s lives. Social work was my calling because of the many different areas in the field that are all primarily focused on making a difference. I am interested in clinical social work, working with individuals and families.
Social workers are described as “helpers,” because they help others resolve problems, obtain resources, provide support during crises, and facilitate social responses to needs. In my opinion, to be a social worker, you need to have a passion for helping others. Having personal experiences in the field of social work you want to work in is also good to have.
All through my sophomore to senior year of high school I knew that was what I wanted to do. Everything about psychology just intrigues my mind. I specifically would love to work with children, like I said I love them. Part of my goal is to become child and adolescent psychiatrist. To get there I will of course study hard in my major and strive to do the best I can. I will take lessons on how to interview professionally. It might be a difficult path and take a while to get there but I know it will be totally worth it in the end and I feel like that is where God is leading to be. I really believe that I am meant to help people and that is what I plan to do. I just really want to make an impact on a child’s life and be someone that they can talk to and feel comfortable with, because a lot of children do not get to experience that kind of safe place. So I would say that my professional goal is to help children more than anything else. But, if something changes about what I want to do with my life I will be very open to
I love working and being around children. I have several experiences with children, I worked at a fitness studio as a child care taker for 3 months, at the high school my second period class was at a preschool and I got to help teach the children, and I watched two kids a few days week for a couple months. This year I am taking a CTE class at the high school where I am able to go to Mark Twain hospital and help out in the ER and learn more about what a nurse does. After I graduate I plan to move to Alabama and go to a community college. After that I then want to transfer to a four year school, and major in nursing and pursue my career of becoming a pedatric nurse.
