As I look at my past I can’t say that any of my career/academic counselors were ever really effective in my life. This is one reason I chose to go into this field as I feel I can help individuals better than what I received as I was going through school. I can’t say I remember my counselors in highschool. However, I can remember my counselors at the community college and when it came to determine my class/degree choices they were unhelpful all the way through. I’d go into their office for some help and guidance on what to do and during my time I felt like I asked all the questions and they never seemed interested in helping me. I’d ask about a specific career path and they had no idea what direct would need to be taken to pursue that career. I was hoping the counselor would be someone I could brainstorm ideas with and have career options to look into. When I think of a counselor, I think of someone who is helpful, one that is not waiting on the student to ask the questions, one that is good enough to be able to pull out the most useful information from the student and can help them see their future how they want to see it by providing resources, and
From the time a child enters preschool, teachers begin asking a common question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” That dreaded query has always haunted me, mostly because the way it was redundantly asked put a ton of pressure on me and my peers. The question was like a rusty nail being hammered into our head’s by society. I continuously had the cliché answers of becoming a doctor, teacher, or a police officer, but with serious reservations. After years of not having a clue, I started to think about what I like to do after the stresses of work and school were gone at the end of the day.
Deciding to become a Student Guidance Counselor was not a fly by night decision. I did a great deal of reading and research before making a decision. I knew once I started a graduate program in School Guidance Counseling, it would be both challenging and a commitment until the end. I am somewhat nervous about this new journey that I am about to partake; however, I am ready to accept the challenge and make the commitment. I am a newly licensed teacher and there will be areas and terminology which I am not familiar. But, what I have found out thus far is that a teacher and a student counselor have quite a few things in common. They both work with other teachers, parents, school administrators, and the community in an academic setting. The skills I have acquired as a preschool director and teacher will be integrated into my career as a guidance counselor. I will have the skills to guide and enhance the social, academic, and personal growth of my students by using a variety of strategies which will be my primary goal. I will be able t...
Choosing a career path that is right for you can be the most crucial decisions you make in your life. Not only is making the right choice important for the present, but it is especially important for your future. When choosing a career it is valuable to consider things such as growth potential, monetary benefits, strengths, weaknesses, and your happiness. By doing that it will help clarify the benefits and tradeoffs for each opportunity you are given. That being said, making such a weighted decision that will impact the rest of your life can be nerve-racking, extremely scary, stressful, and outright frustrating. However, making this decision is not impossible and can become less complicated if you are given the right tools. Gathering information
Counselors are open-minded and do not pass judgment verbally or physically at anytime while assisting students. Prejudging minimizes responses from distressed or problematic students. Giving advice and assistance should not be based on counselors’ personal opinion. Good counselors will refrain from bias and therefore communicate effective skills to empower students. Counselor should become listeners, observers, and advisers.
I cannot recall a more rewarding experience than helping facilitate a child’s education while enabling parent participation alike. These experiences have drawn me to my current position as an Educational Assistant where I am constantly interacting and establishing relationships with students, learning about their goals and aspirations. It is that same desire to empower our future students that has steered me towards a career as a school counselor. By enrolling in the Masters in counseling program, I aspire to develop methods and experience to become an effective, experienced, and adaptable school counselor that promotes self-awareness, allowing students to realize their full potential and impetus them towards a promising future. I want to learn skills that facilitate personal and career development, ensuring that our students grow accomplishing their goals and ambitions.
Counselors Supervisors! After graduation, I will need a counselor supervisor before I start my internship. Therefore, I am glad for this assignment to interview a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC-S) the process can be empowering and enlightening. There are good LPC-S, and there are bad ones. Some are ethical and some or unethical. Some are all about the money, and some actually care about the clients. I believe I met an LPC-S who cares about her clients. It took me a while to find an LPC-S who I could get in touch with. I called many, left messages, sent emails, and I received no response. I finally found Sally Daniels who is passionate about her work. Sally has her private practices, and her passion is serving victims
I have wanted to be a counselor since my freshmen year of high school and in the counseling field there are many specialties that I can focus on. I am fairly certain that I want to specialize in helping people with substance abuse and their families. I have always focused my studies, interests, and work on things that will help me in this field and I have a lot of qualities that help to enhance me in my eventual career. There are difficulties when I get to practice also like what people perceive as correct counseling style, challenges with my gender and race, and finally creating my own counseling style and plans.
Sometimes individuals consider becoming counselors after overcoming some major life challenge such as addiction or a history of bad relationships. Perhaps an individual has encountered a particularly effective counselor or therapist and has a desire to follow in those footsteps. Others may have had a bad experience with counseling and concluded that it can be done better. People do not think of this work so much as a job, or even as a career. More typically, a constellation of life experiences that demand explanation and a sense that others seek one out for assistance and emotional sustenance become driving forces leading one toward the counseling profession” (An invitation to). .
