Thomas Decker once said, “Sleep is that golden chain that ties health and our bodies together.” Sleep is one of the most important puzzle pieces in our bodies. Without it, we’d be completely lost. High school zero period should be shorter because the students who chose orchestra, for example, would get more sleep, they would be healthier, and they wouldn't have to worry about being late for sleeping late due to homework.
Many high school students are sleep deprived. For instance, staying up too late and having to wake up early are both reasons that contribute to lack of sleep. To begin with, according to Ann Pietrangelo, those who are sleep deprived are more likely to gain weight. More importantly, lack of sleep can increase your appetite, which makes you feel like you need to eat more. Also, gaining weight increases risks of problems in your cardiovascular system, leading to high blood pressure and even stroke. Secondly, in children and teens, the hormones that promote growth are released during sleep. Thus, if adolescents don’t get enough sleep, they won’t grow as well as they should. In addition to that, those growth hormones also make repairs to cells and tissues, meaning that if a child doesn’t get enough sleep, their cells and tissues may not be repaired. For example, according to Ginny Sugimoto and Kate Stone Lombardi, some students can’t control themselves and play on their electronic devices all day long and start their homework at 10 o’clock or later. However, what contributes to that is that they have to wake up at 6 o’clock in the morning! Even if they don’t use their device excessively, they still have to wake up extremely early on a daily basis! In addition, although zero period is optional, some students have no choice but to participate in zero period or they will not have permission to be in other after-school activities! For instance, in some schools here in Bakersfield, if you are not in orchestra, you cannot participate in Bakersfield Youth Symphony or Honor Music Festival! Messing with these sleep cycles in the long run and lead to sleep disorders. Research done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests teenagers 13-18 years old should regularly sleep 8-10 hours each night for a healthy sleep. Sports, extra-curricular activities, and Fine Arts programs play an important role in students’ lives and require a significant amount of commitment and dedication. Social life aside, some students have taken the additional endeavors of acquiring jobs, participating in volunteer activities, and taking extra Advanced Placement classes. With too many tasks to fulfill in a twenty-four hour day, high school students are forced to substitute for the most essential condition of all: sleep.
School days should be shorter fro students because they do not get enough sleep, have to much homework, and have barley have time to participate in extra curricular activities. A majority of students have sleep depravation due to school. If school would either start or end late students will have a greater opportunity to get more sleep.
