I’m currently enrolled in Montgomery College, located in Maryland. Montgomery College is a community college. Community colleges are different in comparison to four-year universities. I had a choice of either getting a job or going to college. There are many reasons why I choose to go to Montgomery College. I chose to go to college because I want to pursue a degree in Psychology. When choosing a college, there are a lot of decisions to make and you have to choose what’s best in your interest. Sometimes I think about how America’s founding father’s intended to guarantee everyone a free education; not a professional education, but the basics anyone needs in to be accepted in society. Unfortunately, I think the standards have changed. College is now just as necessary as high school. Does that mean it should be free? This has been a quiet issue going around in America among our youth because they the financing of college. Lowered, yes. Free, no. College is a privilege, not a luxury. It is only mandatory to get a high school education for most basic jobs that should be able to let you survive on your own. Today in our world, parents put a huge emphasis on college and its benefits but no one is willing to lower the price or allow a full ride as in high school. Society wants us to go to school but they continue to raise the price which doesn’t make any sense.
There are parents out there that has a child that’s about to enter the adult world and citizens that are paying taxes even though they don’t have a child in school. Would citizens want to pay more taxes for ungrateful and unappreciative students? Would parents want to see their child’s life thrown away because of the wrong crown? Or even seeing their own dream getting thrown away because of the parents? College teaches students responsibly, independence and many more life skills that they need to know in the adult world. They learn to work hard for want they want in life; the easier it comes, the easier it goes. If college is going to be free, most students will not appreciate it as much as if they worked for it for their selves. College should not be a free program that careless and irresponsible students can take advantage of.
The double standard of aging is, as women get older they are seen as less useful, less attractive, you could even say “washed up”. Whereas, men are seen as mentally and financially stable, wise and powerful. Society see’s women as this “young spring chicken” who can do anything, take care of others, create life; typically young women are seen as sexier, more fun and livelier. As women age, they are portrayed as mean, boring, not as sexy, or even useless. On the other hand, society sees men as they age as strong, powerful, sexier, and even wiser; typically younger men are seen as immature, broke, and useful for great sex as “they are in their prime”. The article “What is Successful Aging”, thoroughly explained the author’s thoughts on what aging successfully actually means. I think it is extremely vital to try our best to be content with our lives and what we have done at a later age. Integrity versus despair, as we learned in class kept coming to mind while reading the article. It is important that when one reaches this age he or she doesn’t feel like there is more to look back on than to look forward to.
