Thesis: Young athletes are more prone to injury when specializing in one sport, due to overuse and repetitive motion within the singular sport. By playing multiple sports the athletes strengthen different muscles and limit the risk of overuse preventing injury.
By having your child engaged in organized sports there are many positive benefits. Those benefits can range from giving your child structure, participating in physical activity and giving them opportunities to socialize (Youth Sports 1). But in any level of sport competition injuries are always a risk. An estimated 3.5 million children suffer sport-related injuries in a year. Around 40% of those injuries occur to children age five to fourteen require emergency room visits. These statics are on the rise as youth sports injuries are becoming more common. The process can be defined as “intense year-round training in a specific sport with the exclusion of other sports at a young age”(Caruso 2). Within the process, there are many different kinds of specialized athletes, some are just moderately specialized and others are highly specialized. A way to tell if an athlete is highly specialized is if they can answer certain questions such as “Have you quit one sport to focus on another? Do you consider your primary sport more important? Do you train more than eight months a year for your primary sport?” (Aubrey 2). By answering yes those questions athletes are considered highly specialized in their sport. By being highly specialized athletes hope to gain skills that make it possible for them to become professional athletes (POSSIBLY CITE).
