For parents the main concern is the safety of their child and which sports to avoid, athletes are more so concerned with how to avoid injuries while continuing to play the sports they love. Well studies have been taken to answer many of the frequently asked questions by parents and athletes about sports and injury prevention. Many researchers, scientist, and doctors have come together to find the answers to why their is an increase in sports injuries amongst children. Many parents believe football to be the most dangerous sport, well football is very dangerous but it is not the number one cause for injuries. Because football is a high impact sport injuries can be a lot more serious than injuries caused by other sports. Basketball is also a contact sport like football, which is believed to be the most dangerous sport, yet football results in less reported injuries than basketball. Al Toon, father of Saints receiver Nick Toon, was forced to leave professional football after sustaining nine concussions in eight years of professional football. Football is one of the most dangerous games. As the years go on, more and more rules are being written to prevent the danger, but danger is the nature of the game. Most of these rules are for the protection of the players, but there are times when injuries can be a good thing. The Philadelphia Eagles were 3-5 to start the year, but Michael Vick was injured and the backup quarterback led the team to be 10-6, win the division, and almost beat the New Orleans Saints in the playoffs. "About 1.7 million Americans suffer a traumatic brain injury (TBI) every year, about three-quarters of them mild TBIs, or concussions" (Clemmitt). Traumatic Brain Injuries are used as the main form of evidence in Richard Cohen's claim that the end of the NFL is near, and quite frankly, his argument is pretty solid.
ACL Injuries in Athletes The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) attaches the femur, which is the thighbone, and the tibia, which is the shin, together (northstar). A torn ACL is one of the most excruciating experiences in an athlete’s life. It is the first thing that comes to mind when they hurt their knee on the field; for many it is their greatest fear. A torn ACL can sometimes mean the end of an athlete’s career.
Children who are active recklessly engage in activities where injuries can occur. Nobody can predict when or how seriously anybody will get injured during an activity, however, the risks of children playing tackle football is prevalent where the dangers are imminent. The game of tackle football on a youth level is dangerous for children since they are developing physically and mentally. According to an article from The Atlantic, “America’s most dangerous football is in the peewee leagues, not the National Football League” (Barra, 2013). According to a journal article, “sports injuries account for approximately 23% of pediatric emergency department injury related visits” (Podberesky, Unsell & Anton, 2009). “Of these sports injury-related
Since football’s inception, it has been considered a manly sport. Young boys have been encouraged by their parents to participate in the game. For many boys, it is considered a rite of passage. However, football is a dangerous sport. A study conducted by the Center for Injury Research and Policy found, “an estimated 5.25 million football-related injuries among children and adolescents between 6 and 17 years of age were treated in U.S. emergency departments between 1990 and 2007. The annual number of football-related injuries increased 27 percent during the 18-year study period, jumping from 274,094 in 1990 to 346,772 in 2007” (Nation 201). These reported injuries include sprains and strains, broken bones, cracked ribs, torn ligaments, and concussions. A concussion usually happens when a player takes a hard hit to the head or is knocked unconscious on the playing field, and if not diagnosed and treated quickly, a concussion can result in death.
Every sport has its tricks and ways of doing things the right way. You can assure anyone that the sport their child is playing is safe, because there is always a stronger, bigger, faster player than them. Personally, I believe football is a demanding sport that requires a lot of strength, and stamina. If you read the article “Hard Knocks” by Alan Schwarz, it gives a brief story about a young football player. “The autopsy showed that his brain was in the early stage of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, more commonly known as C.T.E.” Many football players die from this condition.
Sports injuries can affect bones or soft tissues such as ligaments, muscles, and tendons. When playing in a sport there is always a chance you might get an injury. Children ages from five to 14 years old have the highest rate of injuries, children are more likely to suffer injuries due to their immature reflexes and are less likely to recognize risks. Of course as you know contact sports are one of the highest rated, and with that being said most injuries happen during practice rather than in an actual game. When dealing with sports 95% of the time injuries are minor soft tissue traumas, like bruising
In fact it is more likely than not that player will get injured playing sports. Players suffer sprained ankles, bruises, broken bones and concussions. It is part of the game, an unfortunate likelihood. Sports in itself is dangerous and football is amongst the top of the list in terms of danger. It is up to the parents to decide whether or not it is a risk that they are willing to take. Does a boy channel the passion he inherited from his father to a different type of sport or activity? Does a parent pull their child form the sport because of the fear of injury? The fact remains that football needs changes to make it
Bounteous doctors, trainers, and even N.F.L players also believe is dangerous to play. Countless of people usually won’t want to play a dangerous sport, but countless are coming up with ideas to lower the risk and cause football to be safer to play. As explained in “How dangerous is high school football?” football is the highest leading cause of sport-related injuries. Secondly, teens are more vulnerable to receiving concussions from playing football. Furthermore, N.F.L players that have had concussions has made people worry about teen football players head injuries. The copious amount will suggest football is dangerous, but there are doctors, trainers, even N.F.L
The number of girls and women participating in all levels of sports has risen greatly in recent years, and the way they play has changed too. Women's sports used to be played by a slow defensive style. Today, the sports are played with speed, precision, and power. With these changes have come increased injuries, and female athletes have higher injury rates than men in many sports. Knee injuries have been rising in female sports. Anterior crutiate ligament (ACL) injuries have become the most common injury in the knee to female athletes. Females are four times more susceptible to injury then men.
If there are many injury reports then the sport has to be pretty dangerous. “Based on almost 1,900 injury reports submitted to the RIO, the researchers estimate there was 517,726 football-related injuries during the 2005-2006 season at the high school level across the United States.” (High School, College Football Comes With Risk) High school sports are more dangerous because the athletes are still growing. “High school athletes are less physically mature and have less muscle mass than the collegiate athletes, for instance. They also have incomplete growth plates, meaning their bones are still developing.” (High School, College Football Comes With
People may wonder, "out of all the sports there are, how can football be the most dangerous? Research has shown that many football players suffer from head trauma while playing. Football can cause these young boys and men to have health issues dealing with their brain which can led to mental health problems. A concussion is simply brain damage. This happens when two football players hit head on. Some may think this is
The only difference between the past and present of contact sports is the safety. “In the following viewpoint, the authors discuss youth contact sports and the risks of concussions, arguing that the benefits of youth sports outweigh the injury risks. They examine the health risks associated with football and compare those risks to the benefits of playing, both for children in youth football programs and professional football players. Maroon and

Football isn’t even the most dangerous contact sport that you could play. Other high school sports have recorded just as much, or even more concussions than football. In an article on WebMD.com Robert Preidt writes that, “Between 2010 and 2015, the concussion rate was higher in girls' soccer than in boys' football, the findings showed. During the 2014-2015 school year, concussions were more common in girls' soccer than in any other sport in the study.” Despite being viewed as one of the most dangerous sports, football does not even have the largest rate of concussions or the most serious concussions. In fact, in another study on Fox Sports.com, soccer was seen to be responsible for more of the serious concussions. Concussion numbers can be dropped with attentiveness and responsibility as kids play the game of football. Most concussions in youth football are a result of the player being irresponsible or intentionally violent while they play. But, new rules are in place that diminish this style of play. The amount of concussions can be reduced, and organizations are working on making football a safer game to play. In an article on the New York Times Marvin Washington, a former NFL player, says, “I know this is contrary to public opinion, but the game of football is safer than it has ever been, and is evolving into an even safer game.” The safety of football players at all
The life of Emily Dickinson is eccentric and is characterized by crazy things and activities. She first adopted the spelling of her name as ‘Emilie' that this showed how she loved to remain a child forever. She was in white attire during her life, and she became reclusive in her thirties and never left the house. She spent most of her time in the room than spending with her friends or in social gatherings. Her seclusion helped her write most of the poems because it gave her time and space.
