For as long as sports have been around sports fans have focused on male sports more than female sports. Even with the inclusion of female sports to the world, male sports still receive more recognition. But don't you think women deserve more recognition when it comes to sport? The lack of recognition received may be caused from the stereotypes that are imprinted into the minds of sports fans that men are faster, bigger and stronger and deserve to get paid more money for doing their sporting job. Media coverage of women's sports on television and newspapers are low compared to mens sports, but some people may argue that mens sports are more entertaining to watch. Why would this be the case if both men and women's sports receive the same recognition? Well this is not the case and is proved through the information gathered. Statistics of how much coverage women's sports receive from free to air television show that male sport is highly focused more on compared to women. The overall coverage for women's sport from channels SBS, ABC, 7, 9 and 10 is 7.4% compared to male sport coverage which is 81.1%. These stats are insulting and prove that women receive less recognition and deserves more. A study last year conducted by year 10 students found that less than 2% of the sports section in a local newspaper was filled with women's sports. If women were focused more highly in the media there would be more money to be made. This is from women's sporting event sales, media coverage and news reports on games and events, this would not only gain money but also give an identity for women's sport. You can look at world records for 100m sprints, the male world record is 9.58 seconds, and the female world record is 10.49 seconds almost a whole second faster the male time is. Take cricket for another example the WBBL was introduced to Australia last year, this is a modified version of the BBL a 20 over cricket game where the objective it too hit as many runs as you can in the short period of time. The boundaries are shorter, bowling pace is slower and less 6's are hit in the WBBL compared to the male BBL. In a game of tennis, for a male match to be determined at least 3 sets have to be played and 5 sets at maximum, but for a women's match to be determined at least 2 need to be played and 3 sets at maximum. So if men are playing more sets in tennis, hitting bigger 6's and bowling faster in cricket and running faster in the olympics why should women get paid the same amount as men?

The future of male sports is higher compared to female sports purely based on the fan base around kids. This is the reason why media gives more recognition to male sports compared to female sports through television programming, news timing and the amount of newspaper articles. If male sport has a higher fan base it is believed that it has a higher chance of growing in the future and is the main reason why media and news crews report more highly on male sports compared to female
