We all know some students that go to school with leggings on or clothes that may not look like they would be approved, but still get away with wearing them. But when certain students walk in with frowned upon clothes, they are sent to the office, or are told they have to change right away. It seems unfair that some students get dress coded and not others do not. If the dress code does not apply to all the students, then there should not be a dress code. Even during the different seasons, students should be able to wear what is appropriate for that weather especially since the school building does not have air conditioning. When students are dress coded for the way they look, I think it is ridiculous. Students may feel self conscious when they are told that they can not wear what they have on, especially if they can not afford something else. It breaks them down especially when they are being judged or made fun of for trying to be their self. “The outcome is that girls begin to see their bodies as …show more content…
something that must be hidden away — or the opposite. Girls will no longer look and strive to be what they want to be but what they perceive others want them to be” (Molina). When Michigan weather changes seasonally, students should be able to wear what is appropriate for that season.
When it is winter and cold outside, students should be in warm clothes and not much skin should be shown. But, when the weather is hot in the Spring and Fall students should be able to wear appropriate clothing. Especially when the school does not have air conditioning and it is seventy five degrees out. The classrooms get very warm and students get overheated. Therefore, I think anyone should be able wear shorts or tank tops. However, if there is a dress code, some clothes are prohibited to be worn. Girls may wear shorts to school, but if they are not an arm’s length down their thigh, they will be dress coded. And when that happens, girls will usually wear capris and then it’s too hot. Even when they are wearing tank tops, their bra strap can not be showing, or else they will be dress coded. Layering shirts or tank tops can be too hot
also. Another problem is that some families may not have enough money to buy appropriate clothes for the school dress code. “If schools didn’t have dress codes some of the money issues may be solved (in small families at least). The other clothes that parents buy for their children (for dress codes) just go to waste. There is no need for a kid to have two sets of clothes” (Savarese). When families cannot afford all the appropriate clothes, students may go to school with old clothes on or some that be handed down to them and therefore should not be judged. Overall, the dress code should not be in schools. For the sake of some families money being spent on clothes to wear in school, when their kids will not wear out of school. Or when the weather is warm out, students should be able to wear shorts and tank tops without being dress coded, because it is hot outside and too warm inside. Most important, I feel the dress code is not fair, because not every student is treated the same. Some students get dress coded and others not for the same style of clothing. “Female students are frequently sent home to fix the violation, they have to change. Not only is this embarrassing, but it disrupts her education” (Guertin).
The Dress Code is also to help from distractions like weird, strange clothes, it often distracts the students from learning. Not only that, but in High School there is large groups of gangs, and they can’t wear clothing that represents them and wear anything offensive, because then less violence will occur.
...e effects of dress code in schools helps prevent bulling and allows them to be themselves and keeps negative advertising out of the classrooms. Enforcing these rules impacts the students on a daily basis without them even realizing it. In addition, this makes students feel safe from being bullied or treated differently depending on what they wear. The feeling of being able to be unique and diverse leaves teens feeling like they have the upper hand in the dress code policy, which is a feeling that all teens love.
Rheanne Sargent was given in-school suspension last October for dying her hair pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and she isn’t the only one. All over the country students are being sent home or punished because their hair color isn’t “natural” or their clothing is “unprofessional”. This is unfair and unjust punishment to students who are just trying to express themselves through clothing or hair. Schools should only be able to enforce a clothing dress code if it is proven that it is distracting or harmful.
First of all, if students want to attend class in the clothes that make them feel comfortable, then they should be able to do so. In the 2015 article on The Atlantic on The Sexism of School Dress Codes, stating that "Many of these protests have criticized the dress codes as sexist in that they unfairly target girls by body-shaming and blaming them for promoting sexual harassment. Documented cases show female students being chastised by school officials, sent home, or barred from attending events like prom. "
Ensuing President Bill Clinton's State of the Union address in January of 1996, more and more public schools are implementing dress codes and uniform policies in their schools. As a result, there has been an increase in legal controversies dealing with the issue. The reason that dress codes are not conclusively enforced is due to the application of the First Amendment to juveniles in the public school setting. The First Amendment states that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Should children in public schools be able to wear whatever they want because of the freedoms classified in the First Amendment? I feel that the answer is no. Institutionalizing dress codes in public schools would do a great good for students and the entire academic community. I base my opinion on the fact that the pros of imposing dress codes outweigh the cons of the argument. By imposing dress codes or uniforms for students, it would eliminate opportunities for the ridicule of less popular or less fortunate students based on their attire, help prevent gang violence and gang members from wearing gang colors and insignia in schools, and generate an overall better academic concentration and discipline in the educational community.
Dress codes are biased towards girls. Also, dress codes are kinda sexist towards girls and when it comes to a dress code they tend to look at girls more. At my school dress codes are unfair towards girls because girls get dress coded for having holes above there thigh but boys can have there underwear showing at the top of their jeans or you can see there underwear through there hollie jeans. “Students don't hate dress codes they hate the unfair enforcement.”
Why should schools modify their dress code? All throughout the United States of America, schools have dress codes. Some dress codes have meaning full and low dress code rules, others have rules that make teens feel uncomfortable and get punished for. Daily, students are judged on how they dress. Dealing with a dress code takes time and effort for a teen to understand why they are being punished because they have the right to express themselves.
I personally believe that all students should have different dress codes because the styles of men and women are different from each other and there shouldn't be any unfairness to any dress code policy. Equality in dress codes is low because women get targeted the most for what they wear.
I believe schools should not have dress codes because students should be able to get to chose what they get to wear to school. cost too much to buy special things (ex. school uniforms, Polo shirts, Khakis, etcetera).
“ Excuse me young lady, you are showing way too much skin with that shirt! Please go and change before you distract those boys from getting their education.” The struggle of being a girl is difficult. You live your whole childhood not expressing your wardrobe because you don’t want to get in trouble at school. Sometimes when we forget all about the dresscodes, we are called out by teachers or faculty staff and are labeled as a “distraction”.
Choosing what to wear for the day. This is what most students are thinking about when they wake up. Students need the latest fashion in order to fit in, but some clothing may not be acceptable to wear in school. School dress codes are denying students their right to dress how they want, but the dress code is important for the students and their learning. Students are beginning to stand up and want to be heard. Some students are taking action and want the dress code to become less strict but some schools are doing the opposite for safety issues and for the students healthy learning environment. Dress codes are important for a strong and healthy learning environment and is also reducing violence in many schools around the country.
Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue, once said “Create your own style… Let it be unique for yourself and yet identifiable for others.”, Students are not able to do this because of school dress code.School dress code has certain rules about what students may and may not wear. Students who wear clothes under school dress code cannot express themselves or their religion, students may get embarrassed that they are getting dress coded and most dress codes are targeted at girls. Here are some of the reasons why I think they need to loosen up on dress code.
A student’s right to express themselves, as long as it’s not harming someone, should never be denied. Not every student can easily write a poem or paint a portrait about how they feel, but all students can use clothes to show who they are and how they feel. When a student is told that they have to change, it’s almost like saying they have to change who they are too. Clothes are the most important part of a first impression. They allow a student to pride, not only in what they are wearing, but for their school, or their sports team, or the play they got cast in.
While dress codes are a necessity in schools to regulate what is and is not appropriate for the learning environment, the fact that they place blame on females for how they are treated because of their clothing is completely sexist and unfair. Hardly ever is a boy busted for wearing athletic shorts or bro-tanks when he should not be, but as soon as a girl wears leggings or shows her shoulders, she is persecuted and given punishment. This is about as unfair as school systems can be, and it also sends the message to girls that what they perceive as being cute and fashionable is perceived by others as “offensive” and that it is their fault for anything bad that happens to them. These ideas should be changed so girls do not have to feel guilty and boys can stop thinking that their behavior in these situations is acceptable.
Do you agree with school dress code? Well I do not agree with it. So I am going to be telling you some of my opinions and what others think and some information about dress codes. Did you know that it cost a lot of money just to buy a school uniform and it also does actually have some safety benefits that some students or any trespasser can mess up so technically they are not completely safe. School dress codes limit an individual's rights and therefore are unconstitutional.
