Experiencing Fatal Sensations The sound of music can fulfil someone's ears with the rhythm of the beat or the sweet tone of the melody. Some people enjoy music with a little more “experience.” Rock, rap, and heavy metal are examples of music genres that has a reputation of using drugs to enhance the experience of the music. One other common music genre that has a reputation of drugs is EDM. Electronic Dance Music. It is a type of music typically created by using electronic devices, like a laptop, generated by a person with some talent. This music genre is known for it’s “club drugs” like ecstasy, methanamine, or magic mushrooms. (“CRC Health”) Some people use drugs at raves to “enhance” the experience and also people have tried or are trying to push the usage of drugs at rave to a certain that you can take. Ecstasy is mostly one of the drugs that they want to push the legalization use of it. Many people outside of raves think it would still be a horrible idea to include ecstasy at raves due to the effects of what the drug does. People who attend raves said that they should wear bracelets and sell the drug to people over the age of 21. The problem with that is many people have health issues and they just ignore the fact that the drug can cause serious injuries or damage the brain. Ecstasy has a lesser rate of death and overdose issues, but probably would not happen. If it were to happen they should the limit or the usage of the drug so people would not over dose or cause a lot of health issues. It doesn't only make musicians creative, but it is also used in movies and shows. It is usually pretty easy to tell if they had been taking these drugs (). They had first used these drugs to help them write song lyrics. They not only had wrote the lyrics but they would put a hint in the lyrics of what kind of drug they use. They would use a nickname of a drug, use the word in general, or describe it in a way for others to tell. It also helps improves performance when the band plays. Beginning with the late 1960’s counterculture in San Francisco, music and drugs will forever be inter-linked. Hippie bands such as the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers, and Phish are associated with marijuana, mushrooms, and LSD. Modern electronic “rave” , or club music is associated with MDMA or Ecstasy. When one thinks of rock and roll, sex and drugs immediately come to mind. While the use of drugs is not essential for the creation or performance of all new music, it was certainly in important factor for the counterculture music of the late 1960’s. While some of the most important and influential music was made with the help of psychoactive drugs, it was often to the detriment of the artist. Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, and countless other tremendously talented artists had their lives cut short due to drug use. Drugs were most often good for the music, but deadly for the music makers.
We’ve all seen them before. Maybe at a bus stop, in our schools, or at the coffee shop. “They” look odd enough to frighten a circus clown, but for some reason, they always smile when you look their way. Perhaps it’s that their hair is the color of the sunset or that their pants look like they could house a small family. It could be that their headphones seem permanently glued to their ears and that they’re never afraid to groove on the sidewalk. Whatever the reason, you know that “they” are not quite normal. You may call them “freaks,” or “punks,” or simply “those crazy kids.” But if you did, you’d be misled for “they” are not you’re average young people, no, “they” are ravers.
Hallucinogens or psychedelics are mind-altering drugs, which affect the mind’s perceptions, causing bizarre, unpredictable behavior, and severe, sensory disturbances that may place users at risk of serious injuries or death. Hallucinogens powerfully affect the brain, distorting the way our five senses work and changes our impressions of time and space. People who use these drugs a lot may have a hard time concentrating, communicating, or telling the difference between reality and illusion. Hallucinogens cause people to experience - you guessed it - hallucinations, imagined experiences that seem real. The word "hallucinate" comes from Latin words meaning, "to wander in the mind."
So began my two-year ethnography on the American rave subculture. The scene described above was my initiation into the underground subculture where rave kids, typically under twenty-one years old, are given secret invitations to attend private warehouse parties with dancing, drugs, and thousands of their closest friends. Because of my youthful and unorthodox appearance, I was invited to join the then-highly-exclusive underground scene and attended numerous raves in several major cities in North Carolina. Although my chosen subculture was not typically examined by academia, I conducted an academic ethnography of what Maton (1993) describes as a "group whose world views, values and practices diverge from mainstream North American and social science cultures" (747). As a result, I received three graduate credit hours for "supervised research in ethnography" and conducted what may be the only academic ethnography on raves.
Yes ecstasy is used at “raves”, but not by everyone. Natural “ravers” (sober ravers), are given a bad rap because their title “raver” is automatically connected to ecstasy. Yes many people at raves drop ecstasy but just as many do not. Many people have been permanently effected by “ecstasy “, but those people say that the drug “ruined their life” when in actuality “they ruined their own life.”

But it wasn t until around the early 1980s that MDMA showed up in trendy nightclubs, and it came around as a common drug of choice in the Dallas area under the name of Adam. From there, the drug spread to rave clubs all around the country and then into mainstream society. It wasn t until the late 1980s that MDMA became known as Ecstasy . Upon the time when MDMA was being called Ecstasy, it was beginning of being widely used in portions of Europe such as the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Netherlands as an essential constituent of rave culture and its subculture music scenes. Ecstasy became widespread among young adult attending universities and, later, among teenagers in high schools. MDMA then became one of the four widely used illicit drugs in the United States, second only to cannabis for first-time users.
Throughout America's music history, the use and abuse of illegal drugs has been widespread, and some great musicians' lives have been utterly devistated and ruined by drugs. Often times it seems as though, in studying their histories, many musicians are falsely led to believe that if they use certain drugs, their playing will improve, or become more creative. Many great musician's lives have been tragicly cut short because of their drug use, and God only knows where some of them would be today had they not fallen into the trap of believing a chemical substance can improve their musicianship. The tragic thing is that by the time they realize that the drugs are only hurting their performance, the addiction has already taken control of their lives and their music.
The music performed by DJs at EDM festivals consist of remixed songs and some that are original. The beats, bass, and rhythms are what people seem to really enjoy about this type of music, myself included. Because EDM is so different from conventional music, it is in some ways, breaking normal conventions that surround “typical” music. For example, some songs focus so much on the bass and sound, that there are no lyrics or singing at all. Although this aspect can be said about other genres of music, EDM is still quite different. Over the past few years, EDM has slowly started to enter mainstream music as well. Perhaps, this has helped with the surge of EDM festival popularity. Although the festivals are now quite large, one of the most popular festivals, EDC (Electric Daisy Carnival), took quite a few years to gain the popularity it has today. The popularity of these festivals has also lead to EDC festivals being held in Europe, Mexico, and other countries.
Rave Music is made up of technologically advanced beats that are mixed with other beats to form music. Rave Music has a culture of its own, as so does any other music type. The history of Rave Music is hard to sum up, but here it goes...
Legalizing recreational drugs does not mean making drugs accesible to all people. The drugs that are legal today, alcohol and tobacco (nicotene) aren’t available to just everyone; they are regulated. Only certain people are allowed to buy them. Since the drug trade is unregulated, drugs are sold anywhere they can be (e.g. schools), allowing children to have access to them. If these drugs were illegal, than that trade would stagnate, and children wouldn’t have such easy access to them. It makes sense… do you ever see people in schools selling beer or cigarrettes? Also, the usual cause of drug overdose is the fact that a person cannot know the potency of the drug he/she is taking. There are no standards because the trade of drugs is illegal in the first place. If they were legal, there would be a standard of quality for all drugs, regulated by the FDA.
One of the ever growing issues in our society is the use of drugs. Drugs come in many different shapes and sizes and can be consumed in a variety of ways. The drug epidemic is taking over our society and resulting in several drug addictions. There are a multitude of drugs that are used throughout the world and there is also a multitude of these drugs that are being abused.
