Since the earliest days of human civilization music has been a key tool for communication of stories which carried emotions through them. If we think back to our youngest years of life music has surrounded us whether it was from our parents singing us lullabies or from some sort of toy that played music we can say that musical melodies have helped shape or lives one way or another. Once we start growing up and figuring out who we are our musical preferences change; some people like classical and some like punk. We start to befriend people who like the same music as us and eventually we may attend a musical event. Our lives somewhat revolve around the music that we listen to. We play music loudly with our friends and families at social gatherings and ultimately it creates a friendly and open atmosphere. Now the last thing we would think about would be that at one of these social events one of us may die. In recent years there have been more and more deaths and injuries at musical festivals all throughout the United States. Although the number is much lower than deaths and injuries from automotive accidents they should not be over looked. Music festivals are becoming more and more popular and people are flocking to festivals all around the United States. These music festivals in today’s society have turned into drug infested parties in which people’s live are endangered and people themselves are exposed to drugs and unsafe festival conditions. A hand full of the most popular music festivals in the world are based in the United States of America. Today ultra is one of the biggest music festivals in the world. I think music has a way of explaining something or telling a story. Music can bring up happy times, it can also bring up sad times as well. Certain songs can remind someone of troubling issues from a past, can be the reminder of someone you have lost, it can also be a reminder of many happy times; such as weddings, high school dances, or even just hanging out with friends in the back
Now a days, we are used to shocking lyrics and eye catching looks. It seems that every artist now is fighting to be so different that everyone is drawn to them. It was not always like this. In the late nineties and early two-thousands, most artists tried to fit in with the other blonde, processed pop stars that the industry was spitting out. When there was an artist who was not always happy and did sing about PG rated topics, they were blamed for what was wrong with the world, especially teenagers. In his article ‘I’d Sell You Suicide: Pop Music and Moral Panic in the Age of Marilyn Manson”, Robert Wright delves into and debunks claims that rock music, especially that of Marilyn Manson, is a main cause for teenage suicide.
Ecstasy is mostly one of the drugs that they want to push the legalization use of it. Many people outside of raves think it would still be a horrible idea to include ecstasy at raves due to the effects of what the drug does. People who attend raves said that they should wear bracelets and sell the drug to people over the age of 21. The problem with that is many people have health issues and they just ignore the fact that the drug can cause serious injuries or damage the brain. Ecstasy has a lesser rate of death and overdose issues, but probably would not happen. If it were to happen they should the limit or the usage of the drug so people would not over dose or cause a lot of health issues. Raves should allow a health of the people who is going when they purchase the tickets and should be prepared of what they are doing and what is going to happen. (“Drug
Music has been around since the very beginning of time. The human body flows in a rhythmic syncopation. Music is used to change one’s mood and to inspire those who open their minds. It has the potential to cure diseases such as Parkinson’s disease. Humans, of every culture and society, function with a type of rhythmic music. As humans, we are hard wired to respond to music (Mannes). The human brain responds to music in such a way that the brain becomes more open to new rhythms, ideas, and values. Music has the power to take over the human body. This makes it easier to overcome conflict and change the ideals of somebody while using music (The Power of Music).
Beginning with the late 1960’s counterculture in San Francisco, music and drugs will forever be inter-linked. Hippie bands such as the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers, and Phish are associated with marijuana, mushrooms, and LSD. Modern electronic “rave” , or club music is associated with MDMA or Ecstasy. When one thinks of rock and roll, sex and drugs immediately come to mind. While the use of drugs is not essential for the creation or performance of all new music, it was certainly in important factor for the counterculture music of the late 1960’s. While some of the most important and influential music was made with the help of psychoactive drugs, it was often to the detriment of the artist. Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, and countless other tremendously talented artists had their lives cut short due to drug use. Drugs were most often good for the music, but deadly for the music makers.
Have you ever wondered about how did Woodstock change how we look at a concert?Well i am going to tell you a little about how it did. Drug usage at Woodstock changed how we look at concerts. First, “every concert that people go to some people try to sneak in drugs.”Therefore, People try to do drugs outside and inside the concert.. Also, when people here that there is a concert they always think that they are going to bring drugs there. “According to History.com people sold drugs and smoked drugs all the way throughout the concert.” To explain, the people at Woodstock basically got to do whatever they wanted there. The people were happy that they could get
Thirdly, while China has an affinity for live music with 57% of fans attending concerts compared to US’s 51%, it mostly the affluent who attend the concerts compared to the low income households (Savage, 2016). On record, 72% of the Chinese population listen to music per week although it trails behind the US where 91% of the population listens to music weekly and the UK where 85.5% of the population listens to music (Savage, 2016). Although China’s percentage on concert attendance is high compared to other countries, the bottom-line is that it does not reflect the whole society but rather a small portion. The high figures can be partly attributed to China’s approximately 1.3 billion inhabitants, but who showcase high levels of income disparity (McGregor, 2011). The high disparity between affluent consumers and those from lower income households is restrictive in terms o...
When we think of pop culture, many things come to mind. Celebrities, music, movies, and the occasional sex tape scandal. However, there is one thing that is so ubiquitous, we often forget its there; drugs. Drugs in pop culture heavily influence the lives of everyone in one-way or another, whether we choose to recognize it or not. From things like music and movies, to loved ones battling drug addiction.
Throughout America's music history, the use and abuse of illegal drugs has been widespread, and some great musicians' lives have been utterly devistated and ruined by drugs. Often times it seems as though, in studying their histories, many musicians are falsely led to believe that if they use certain drugs, their playing will improve, or become more creative. Many great musician's lives have been tragicly cut short because of their drug use, and God only knows where some of them would be today had they not fallen into the trap of believing a chemical substance can improve their musicianship. The tragic thing is that by the time they realize that the drugs are only hurting their performance, the addiction has already taken control of their lives and their music.
...ck." This blessing is typically given to the "virgin" by seasoned rollers. All of the body and hand rituals can occur in the "ambiance room." The ambiance room is away from the music, so people can talk to each other and be in private. The room has fantastical art, typically painted on the walls to look like psychedelic graffiti. Ravers report seeing hallucinations such as faces on the walls speaking to them, or watching the walls as if they were cartoons. The drugs and the rituals work in conjunction with the music to create the total rave experience.

The most significant down side to technology is the loss in revenue from album sales. Illegal downloading of music has become prevalent in today’s society, and many artists—major or independent—receive little to no profit from album sales. Many companies, such as Apple, have tried combating the issue with protected file formats, but a loophole has always been found to bypass the protection. Unsigned and independently signed artists hurt the most, as they pay almost everything out-of-pocket to produce their music. The only feasible response to the loss in revenue, artists have found, is to increase tour dates. In today’s age, it is not rare to find artists who tour more than eight months out of each year. Touring has become one of, if not the only, reliable source of income for many
The main stage stood proud and center of the 330-acre polo club in Indio, California. The entire crowd, washed in beautiful neon lights, had been cheering in utter excitement in hopes of their favorite band would enter the stage. The high tech equipment of all different shapes and sizes assisted the artist in putting the audience in a musical trance. To get the crowd pumped up, a voice would often say,” One…two…one…two… let’s go! as it projected across the venue from huge speakers vibrating the message. Throughout the concert, you’ll be able to feel your body respond naturally to the rhythm of the song and the only thing you can do is to let loose, and dance. The crowd, filled with a range of young teenagers to adults all add to the ambiance. This describes one of the the largest music festivals known as Coachella.Past the chill vibes and unforgettable experiences, there are several consequences of attending a large music festival. This includes the amount of waste, air pollution, and energy consumption.
Music is an essential part of life because of the expression it allows people to have, its entertainment, and its therapeutic ways for the world.
I will answer my research questions using mixed methods approaches including ethnography, participant observation, interviews, and textual analysis. I will conduct interviews with workers in the touring music industry, including: artists, promoters, technicians, and venue staff I have an extensive professional background in the live music that will allow me to carry out participant observation by going on tour. The department of Geography at The University of British Columbia is an ideal institution to carry out this research. Trevor Barnes has agreed to supervise this research. Vancouver is an ideal city for this research as many tours start, pass through, or end here.
