People should not be able to have exotic animals as pets because someone can end up getting hurt or worse. Kim Haddad is a great source to look at when it comes to this subject. She is very detailed about the animals in her video and also states her opinion strongly on having exotic animals as pets. These animals will usually attack when they feel threatened or scared. Haddad explains the dangers that these animals put out to the public (Haddad). If an individual’s exotic pet leaves its home and gets loose, there is no telling what harm they will end up doing. She talked about many recorded deaths from exotic animals that have occurred in the past years. Most of the deaths are said to come from the pets that are big cats, chimps, and bears. Haddad sounded harsh and could make people feel offended, but from a different perspective, it can open an individual’s eyes and let …show more content…
Lauren Slater who is being used as a source in this paper mentions individual’s own personal attacks. Slater states how “a four year old boy was mauled by a mountain lion his aunt kept as a pet… ” and how “a 55 year old woman’s face was completely disfigured by her friend’s lifelong pet chimpanzee” (Slater). This shows how an individual’s “loving, friendly” exotic pet can change in a minute and harm other people not knowing any better. Jodi Kendal also mentions an incident that happened in Ohio with exotic pets. Kendal states from the news report “Four deputies... found doors of dozens exotic animal cages… are wide open” and from the “48 animals- 39 of them were big cats- are deemed a serious threat to public safety and shot and killed by officials” (Kendal). This statement shows how easily something can go wrong and how many lives you can put in danger in a matter of minutes. Accidents can occur anywhere you would not expect it happening, to anyone of any age, at any
1301 El Dorado Street Crescent City, CA 95531 17 January 2017 Los Angeles Times 202 W. 1st St. Los Angeles, CA 90012 Dear Jeremy Rifkin: In, “A Change of Heart about Animals,” Jeremy Rifkin is wrong with his belief that animals are “much more alike us than we had ever imagined”, however, I strongly agree we need to treat animals with a better atmosphere. Jeremy’s article hasn’t changed my point perspective about animals because he only stated a couple species in his article while claiming all biodiversity are, “ much more alike us’ than we thought. As of today, I have owned nearly 20 different animals in my lifetime, mostly cats and dogs but also some unique animals such as; horses, mules, raccoons, pythons, etc.
Born Free USA has tracked 2,682 incidents in the United States involving exotic pets since 1990, and this is only a partial list since they can only track incidents that they hear through media reporting (“Exotic Animal Incidents”). Due to people keeping exotic animals as pets, humans and exotic animals are suffering unnecessary injuries and death. Although some people believe that exotic pets are wonderful companions to own, it should be illegal to keep exotic animals as pets because exotic pets pose potential threat to the safety of their owners and the public, are dangerous to human health, and are treated improperly. First thing to remember is exotic animals pose threat to the safety of their owners and the public. According to
Why Not Own Exotic Pets? Tragedy of exotic animals ownership has been breaking out over the years, such as the incident of Terry Thompson. The person who released dozens of wild animals like lions, tigers, bears, and other wild creatures into the public. So the question still remains of weather private ownership of exotic animals should be legal and the simple answer is yes, private ownership of exotic animals should be legal. The actions of someone like Terry Thompson shouldn’t decide if owning exotic animals should be legal.
Thesis Statement: Exotic pets should not be banned in the United States because some of these pets are used for at-home experiments, people sometimes get attached to them and they become like family, and some pets are used for special needs.
Why Owning Exotic Animals As Pets Is Unethical By definition, an exotic pet is an animal that does not adjust well to a captive environment. Wild animals living as domesticated pets is actually more common in the United States than you might think. As a matter of fact, more tigers live in U.S. backyards than out in their natural habitats. This is a very prominent issue thanks to illegal animal trafficking and the lack of protective laws in our country. Did you know that only 17 states have banned owning exotic animals?
If people want to keep exotic animals the owners should be responsible for any sort of injury or incident. If the animal goes rogue, the owners should be fined because not lot’s of people are comfortable with tigers walking in a park or chimpanzees not in a cage. If the animal goes missing, then the possessor of the exotic pet should be forced to look cause leaving a exotic pet all on its own is a bad idea and can lead to shots fired by the police and panic. Keep in mind lot’s of incidents in the past have lead to shots fired by the police because they didn't know how to control the situation in a secured way
Who wouldn’t want to own something as cool as a chimp, tigers, or even a grizzly bear as a pet? Exotic animals such as these are owned all over the world, but should they really be able to be owned as pets? Thousands upon thousands of these animals are held in captivity in the US alone but is this the most safe or ethical choice for the animal or person who owns it? Exotic animals should not be allowed to be owned as pets because they can carry deadly pathogens, can attack and kill their owners or others without any warning and these animals suffer terribly when being housed and transported.
If you watch the news often you would know how some people have exotic pets like, Deer, Big cats, Snakes, etc. I would never own/take care of an exotic pet because they could harm you at any second of the day (Or night). Exotic animals are called exotic for a reason, they are very dangerous animals. If you own a exotic animal you need t be very careful because if you make one bad move they might attack you or do worse. Exotic animals shouldn't be held captive because they need to learn new skills (Running, Climbing, Hunting.)
As of the last 10 years having an exotic animal, like reptiles as pets, has become extremely popular. Many people own them because they are truly committed into owning and caring for these types of animals. Others simply for the fact that they “look” cool and say that they own a reptile. The people that keep reptiles for this reason are a huge problem because they do not know how to care for the animal, as in provide a life for them in a way that is comfortable nor by providing the right type of care since each reptile is unique in it’s own way, like a dog or cat is. Reptiles can be just as loving, picky, and capable of sharing a bond with their human, just like our furry four legged friends can.
Born Free USA, nonprofit organization that advocates for animals, states that there are between 5,000 and 7,000 tigers kept as pets, which is more than 3,500 tigers found in the wild. As the number of exotic animals kept as pets keep rising, there are going to be less and less exotic animals, especially tigers, in the wild. The popular trend of keeping exotic pets has caused thousands of exotic animals to be captured and forced to live in an environment that does not meet their needs. It has also led to many incidents involving the injuries or deaths of humans and exotic animals, which has led some states to pass tougher laws on ownership of exotic pets. The incidents have raised questions about whether or not it should be legal to keep all exotic animals as pets.
Visualize this: Someone is trying to rob your house. If you had a guard dog, that could help, since guard dogs are supposed to protect you. What about a three-hundred pound, ferocious, carnivorous, Siberian Tiger? Too bad they are illegal in most states. I believe that exotic animals should be allowed as pets because some exotic animals are naturally quiet, most of them are hypoallergenic, which means that they do not cause allergic reactions, and they live longer than common household animals.
When thinking about owning a pet, one usually thinks of a dog or a cat. According to Robin Micheli from CNBC, more than 20% of American citizens have decided to switch to exotic pets. Many people are getting bored of the same old house pets and want something new from the wild such as a dik dik, a zorilla and a kinkajou. Sadly, most people don't realize the risks of owning an exotic animal. Keeping exotic animals as pets poses physical and mental problems for the animal and its owner.
Every year, thousands of exotic animals are taken from their environments and thrown into cages and treated as if they’re domestic animals. This is not right, a domestic animal is born into captivity and trained to behave. Majorities of exotic animals are born in the wild and trained to behave and, be associated as a domestic pet. We do not agree with this. Exotic animals should not be kept as pets.
Amber Michelle was contacted by the Animal control department in Texas to notify her that the cage she was keeping her furry friend in was too small and the gaps in between the bars were too wide.Amber ignored these warnings because it was never a problem. One day when Amber's nephew got too close to the cage Ambers 150-pound lion reached out of the cage and punctured and lacerated the child's face.Ambers mountain lion was later put to death. In other words exotic animals are too dangerous and should not be kept as pets.
Have you ever had a exotic pet? Do you think that you could take care of a wild animal? Do you think that anyone can? Why would you have an exotic animal in the first place? I believe that you should not let citizens be allowed to keep or own a exotic animal as a pet?
