Sixth grade was like a constant nightmare continuing to my senior year of high school. I grew up in a small town where bullying became common in my school. The beginning of my sixth grade year became the year where the majority of my so-called “friends” would make fun of me for different reasons. One major event that happened to me during my sixth grade year occurred during my physical education class. My classmates and I were outside for the day; however, I was not able to participate due to medication prescribed to me by the doctor for my medical issues. The medication I was taking had a major side effect, heatstroke. If the heat index was up, I could not participate outside. When my classmates were outside running around, I stayed in the …show more content…
One needs to recognize the warning signs of a student who bullies someone else because it is important. This is important because there may be a reason for the people who bully their peers. Students who bully others lash out on other students, because they want attention in which they lack from home (Why Do Kids Bully). The reason students may lack attention is because their parents are divorced, their own parents neglect them, or their parents may be abusing drugs (Why Do Kids Bully). Another reason could be his or her siblings who become victims of bullying need to have the feel of dominance over someone else (Why Do Kids Bully). Regardless a teacher, a parent, or a coach can be bullies in which the child may learn the behavior from them (Why Do Kids Bully). When another student sees someone who is more susceptible he or she feels the need to be powerful over his or her victims (Why Do Kids Bully). At this point one needs to recognize the warning signs of someone who bullies another peer. One way to notice if a child is bullying someone else is if he or she has more money or new belongings than before, are highly aggressive, worry about the popularity reputation, blame problems of theirs on others, or end up going to the principal’s office for getting into trouble (stopbullying.gov). Not every example listed here means a student bullies their peers but, one would definitely need to look at it as if a student was bullying another peer so a responsible adult will take action if necessary. Students who bully their peers have issues occurring in their home, at school, or somewhere else, which causes them to lash out in order to feel superior. In this case, one needs to see the warning signs before other issues come into the victims life which may be life
Research by Rachael Wayne conveys that “bullying has gained notoriety as a type of behavior, becoming increasingly common.” In the novel Lord of the Flies Piggy is faced by a fellow crash survivor, named Jack, who embodies this “notable” behavior. The bulling faced by Piggy in Lord of the Flies, is similar to the bullying experienced by people today.
Even though I work in a school district where we are expected to watch videos on bullying annually, this series was eye opening to the real problem of bullying. According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development three out of ten children are a bully, victim, or both. Another statistic from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development reveals that 3.2 million youth are bullied and 3.7 million youth are the bullies. These statistics are staggering. The characteristics of bullying is repeated aggressive behavior that is carried out over time with the intent of inflicting verbal, nonverbal, or physical harm to another individual. Normal peer conflict happens infrequently between two equal
Bullying in school arises as a global issue, and people are becoming more aware of its essence and its consequences. Going to school should be like a second home, a safe, compliant place, but for some student, school can be a social nightmare. Some may view bullying as a harmless act, but it is in fact a dangerous act. Students that have been bullied tend to be emotionally unstable, depressed, loss of interest in school and they have a higher risk of becoming drug addicts and school dropout. Bullying does not only affect the person being bullied, but also the bully himself. Persons who are bullies are usually the ones with the most problems and they use bullying as a mask to hide all their problems. Students who bully are more prone to abuse alcohol and drugs, they usually engage in risky sexual activities and are more likely to grow up as criminal
Over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year. Schools are suppose to be a safe haven for children, a place to go to be taught and to learn, but when someone is constantly
Bullying is a horrible trait to have. There are many reasons why kids bully other children. In my opinion, there is never a good reason to bully. I believe if we come together as a nation, and educate our younger generation on how to avoid becoming a bully, and then the issue will slowly resolve on its
Nerds, low income youngsters, kids with allergies, or overweight kids. Although we frequently see nerds getting mocked on the tv show, most kids say that academic ability was the most common reason youths are bullied. Anyone can be the target of bullying, even strong, athletic and popular kids. Too many times, people assume that victims of bullying bring it on themselves. They wrongly believe if the targets were different in some way that they wouldn’t be bullied. People also believe that if targets want to be accepted by society and free from bullying they should change themselves. Others believe that targets deserved to be bullied, which is just ridiculous. They think they are too sensitive or whiners and that if they
Bullying by definition is a form of aggressive behavior in which someone intentionally and repeatedly causes another person injury or discomfort. Bullying can take the form of physical contact, words or more subtle actions. [Why] Bullying has grown new outlets over the last decade. With social media outlets and text messaging added to the game, bullying is not just about getting tormented face to face anymore. Cyber bullying can include sending out mean or threatening emails and instant messages about a person, spreading rumors about someone and also include photos that a person would consider to be humiliating. [Chamberlin] Bullying can have many outlets. The most common form of bullying is still face to face confrontation. But the other outlets, such as cyber bullying are definitely not something to take lightly or consider low on a scale of importance. Sexual harassment, racial differences, not being “cool enough”, or just simply being viewed as a weaker individual may attribute to many of the reasons a person is preyed on.
Being a teenager in today’s world can be tough. Adolescence is about friendships and fitting in. Bullying is a problem and can affect that. Students should reach out to those that don’t have friends and help them. Kids that don’t fit in also need to make an effort to do so. If bullying is stopped, which it can be if we tried hard enough, teens would feel much better about themselves. Will you make an effort to stop bullying and help those that don’t fit in?
Bullying within an elementary school begins right from the very first day of school. By the end of Kindergarten, over 20% of students report being bullied within that year. By the end of elementary school, 9 out of 10 students report being bullied at one time or another. The students, who bully during elementary school, are more likely to have it carry on with them for their middle school and school years. The aggressive and violent behaviors towards students in elementary school not only carry on after graduation from high school, but they end up having criminal records.
The first tier and arguably the most important is the students. Students should have an expectation of how to treat others and feel comfortable telling a teacher if there is a situation they need help with. Teachers should look out for early signs of bullying and think of an effective strategy to stop it. Personally, I believe that ‘team-based’ learning is the most effective method of reducing bullying. By creating a team atmosphere, students should be more encouraged to work together and give each other support to achieve a common goal. Offering incentives for everyone to perform well could distract students who are likely to bully their classmates. Next, administrators carry the important task of monitor student behavior trends and implement school policies to combat bullying. My suggestion for administrative policy against bullying is the ‘zero-tolerance’ method. Bullying in any form is unacceptable and should not be allowed on school
Many factors in a child’s life may lead him or her to have such emotional distress that they begin bullying other students at school. Social factors are usually the easiest aspect to identify that would cause a child to bully their classmates. The child may have been bullied them self, which leads to pent up aggression which leads to the release of this aggression on other students. It may also be simp...
Bullying is a devastating issue that threatens the well-being of today’s youth. Those who are most likely at risk are those who; have a learning or physical disability i.g., autism or ADHD, are underweight or overweight, are gay/lesbian/transgendered, or speak a different language. Of course, there are no specific guidelines of who will become victims of bullying. Children who are bullied experience lower self-esteem, greater loneliness, greater anxiety, and more depression in addition to the already stressful adolescent years. The longer the bullying occurs the more profound the symptoms can become. As a low-level, subtle form of violence, bullying creates an unsafe school environment and can lead to more serious types of violence among students (Whitted & Dupper, 2005).
Bullying is a repeated harmful act that continues to affect millions of students every year. There is no stereotypical person that is a target for bullying; anyone can be its victim. There may not always be any signs of physical harm during these attacks, but our children always suffer emotional harm. Educating students, teachers and parents seems to be the only valid solution to this problem. There are many organizations that can educate the schools on this subject but for it to work people must care. Maybe one day, when enough people realize that this problem will not go away with out their help, we can eliminate bullying from our schools. In a perfect world there would be no bullying, but if you could ask Rachel Scott she would tell you we do not live in a perfect world, only a hopeful one.
Bullying of students in school is an abuse that affects and produces a number of negative experiences on the victim. It is proven that those students who bully do so merely because they see themselves superior than those being bullied. They use this as a tactic to make juniors fear them and show them that they are not equal in any way. Some will even bully as a revenge of the bullying they suffered in the past. I have been bullied before and I know some of the effects it could have on a person. Bullying is a serious cause of many issues and has effects that may be long lasting.
The lack of parental attention causes a feeling of insecurity leading someone to acquit bullying. Unfortunately, adult role moles, parents, teachers, coaches, can build up tension in a student to generate them to bully. Students that are neglected, have divorced parents, or are around the influence of drugs/alcohol are more controlling and impulsive by nature. Those who have younger siblings are more suitable to bully in order to feel empowered. When children have an inadequate amount of supervision from a parent, they suppose they can get away with anything, like bullying. Bullying is more known in schools due to a student trying to fit in, and act “cool” in front of his or her classmates. A lot of people believe that in order to acknowledge power and popularity, you need to push the people around you to gain control. However, some children bully others because they used to once be a victim of bullying. Bullying can also arise from peer pressure through manipulation. On the other hand, bullies do not need a reason to hurt another, they seek fragile targets, and intensely desire attention. Also, bullies are not aware of their wrong behavior, and how gruesome it makes a person
