According to ABC news, in October 2013, bullying is on the rise. The last couple of years the news and social media have been filled with stories of bullying. Just last week, there was a story on ABC news about a fifteen year old autistic boy from Ohio, who was deceived into pouring a bucket of urine and feces on his head. The pranksters told the boy that it was for the ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) ice bucket challenge. The boy trusted the pranksters and in return he was mortified. After finding out about this story, I began to wonder what makes someone bully others. Kids tend to know the cool crowd of kids that they have always wanted to be a part of. More than likely most kids will do anything that the cool crowd tells them, just to be a part of their group. For instance, I was in the seventh grade, and there was this girl named Megan, who was the coolest girl in school and it would be a dream to just be her friend. On volleyball picture day, Megan came over to me and told me that if I would poke Sumer Fisher in the face until she bawled, I could sit at lunch with her. I was totally in; it was nothing to make Sumer cry just so I could hang out with the cool crowd. It was not until the coach walked in while I bullied Sumer that I realized this was not the right thing to do. Of course I did not bring Megan into the situation. My punishment of running twenty miles in a week and detention for the succeeding two weeks taught me that what I did was wrong. Another peer pressure can come from social media. Social media has opened a new way of bullying which is known as cyberbullying. I have been the victim of cyberbullying when I was in High school. I started dating this boy from school whose name was Colby. We were both freshman at Whitesboro High School. I thought we were perfect together, until I posted a picture of us on Facebook, and this girl I had never met started commenting me mean comments. A child might experience shame about certain things about their self’s. If he/she believes that they do not match up with what he/she thinks are good enough. Shame makes a child want to hide or just disappear from life. Shame can be experienced as a strong self-loathing that child to become a bully, because they tend to interpret what other children are ashamed of more easily. It seems easy to pick on another person who is ashamed of the same things as another person is. For example, I am ashamed of my weight and in return, I sometimes make fun of my husband Joey’s weight. I personally will make a remark to my husband about his shirt is too tight and he might need to lose a few pounds. I only do this when I’m feeling fat and or ugly. Bullying is a horrible trait to have. There are many reasons why kids bully other children. In my opinion, there is never a good reason to bully. I believe if we come together as a nation, and educate our younger generation on how to avoid becoming a bully, and then the issue will slowly resolve on its
