Growing up, we are introduced and raised around cute fairytale Disney movies such as “Cinderella”, “Sleeping Beauty”, “The Little Mermaid”, and many more. As children, we believe that everything we see in movies good or even sometimes bad, will happen to us, at least once, during our lifetime. We don’t realize but as we get older, we have become completely oblivious as to how these movies have corrupted our views on how to live our lives, romantically and socially. For example, as little girls most of us believe that we will grow up to be princesses and live in our own kingdom. As we get older we come to realization that that’s impossible but we still hold on to the idea and hope for our perfect endings. As writer David Derbyshire states in
his essay The Notting Hill Effect: How Romantic Comedies Can Harm Your Love Life, “The problem is that while most of us know that the idea of a perfect relationship is unrealistic, some of us are still more influenced by media portrayals than we realize” (228). The authors of this short essay warns us of the potential negative outcomes of just simply watching a movie. For decades, women around the world have been impacted by the idea that romantic movies portray. Those being the ideas of finding the perfect man, riding off into to the sunset and living a happily ever after. But that is totally delusional. Unfortunately, there’s no such thing as a perfect anything, not man, not relationship. Predestined love is not real.
Every fairytale seems to have the usual prince saving the poor girl from harm or servitude or whatever horrid situation she may be in, and then companies like Disney add their movie magic and make it into a franchise. Others may add a twist or two, such as the film Ever After, directed by Andy Tennant. Yet no matter how the story goes, there is the same feminine ideas imposed upon the female lead. She has to compete with others for the attention of her “prince,” gender roles are a must, and morals are taught in some way or another through some kind of stereotype. These tend to cause some feminist outrage and even maybe a small outrage among parents who must deal with the children that watch these movies and read the stories because of the behavioral

A little girl sits on the floor with her gaze fixed on the television screen in front of her, watching magical images dance before her eyes and catchy songs flow through her ears. Even though she had seen it at least twenty times before, she still loved The Little Mermaid just as much as she did the first time she watched it. As she watched it, she longed to be a beautiful mermaid with a curvy body and wonderful singing voice like Ariel. She longed to be saved by the handsome Prince Eric, and fall in love and live happily ever-after like Ariel did. In today’s society, women strive to achieve equality between the sexes. Despite the tremendous steps that have been taken towards reaching gender equality, mainstream media contradicts these accomplishments with stereotypes of women present in Walt Disney movies. These unrealistic stereotypes may be detrimental to children because they grow up with a distorted view of how men and women interact. Disney animated films assign gender roles to characters, and young children should not be exposed to inequality between genders because its effect on their view of what is right and wrong in society is harmful to their future.
Everyone knows and loves the enchanting childhood fairytales of magic, princes, and princesses, but very seldom are privy to the detrimental impacts of “happily ever after” on the developing youth. Fairy tales are widely studied and criticized by parents and scholars alike for their underlying tone and message to children. Peggy Orenstein, feminist author, mother, and fairy tale critic, has made it her personal mission to bring these hidden messages to the surface. Fairy tales portray wonderful, elaborate, and colorful worlds as well as chilling, frightening, dark worlds in which ugly beasts are transformed into princes and evil persons are turned to stones and good persons back to flesh (Guroian). Fairytales have long been a part of our world and have taken several forms ranging from simple bedtime stories to intricate plays, musicals, and movies. However, these seemingly simple stories are about much more than pixie dust and poisoned apples. One could compare fairytales to the new Chef Boyardee; Chef Boyardee hides vegetables in its ravioli while fairytales hide society’s morals and many life lessons in these outwardly simple children stories. Because of this fairytales have long been instruments used to instruct children on the morals of their culture. They use stories to teach children that the rude and cruel do not succeed in life in the long run. They teach children that they should strive to be kind, caring, and giving like the longsuffering protagonists of the fairytale stories. Also, they teach that good does ultimately defeat evil. Fairy tales are not just simple bedtime stories; they have long been introducing cultural moral values into young children.
When the word “fairytale” is mentioned, nearly everyone thinks of light-hearted stories with friendly characters and happy endings. However, these are not the ideas that classic fairytales originally sparked. In fact, numerous modern Disney movies were based off stories that were not so sugar coated. In the 19th century, the Brothers Grimm were responsible for multiple of these popular children’s tales. The Disney remakes of classic fairytales such as Cinderella, Tangled, and Snow White exclude the dark, twisted themes that are significant in the Brothers Grimm fairytales, because society tendencies continue to evolve toward sheltering and overprotecting young children.
The first thing to pop into one’s mind when they hear The Little Mermaid is most likely the Disney animated movie starring the beautiful red haired mermaid, Ariel. However, as with most Disney films, The Little Mermaid is an adaption of an original story written by Hans Christian Andersen in the 1830s. The creation of this classic fairytale into an animated feature required alterations from the Disney corporation, leading to a final product that is reminiscent of Andersen’s original story with added layers of American culture, sexism, and musical numbers. The initial release of Disney’s The Little Mermaid was highly successful both domestically and overseas, resulting in a total box office revenue of about 180 million. Although the film received rave reviews and substantial profit, I argue that the Disney adaption loses the fundamental elements of Andersen’s original story and presents a new narrative laced with negative values and inferior moral lessons. The changes in the Disney remake are closely connected to cultural and social aspects of America in the late 1980’s, making it arguably more relatable and successful for current audiences of the time. However, Disney’s adaption of The Little Mermaid perpetuates negative American ideals and incorporates classic Disney fairytale elements, ultimately erasing the positive moral overarching theme of Hans Christian Andersen’s original story.
In today’s modern age, young children are being raised by their TV screen. Reining from the original tales of Perrault and the Grim Brothers, the Disney princess line has been a staple on the screens since the 1930s (Do Rozario 1). However, these princesses have gone through dramatic changes to remain relevant to todays youth. The effects that can be influenced by the roles expressed in these types of films send mixed messages to the audience, causing them to ask themselves whether or not they should believe what the princess is expressing on the screen.

Fairy Tales have been around for generations and generations. Our parents have told us these stories and we will eventually pass them down to ours. In this time of age the most common fairytales are Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and The Beast and many more. Children idolize their favorite character and pretend to be them by mimicking everything they do in the stories. The character’s behavior is what is viewed as appropriate in society. However, have you ever really looked at what makes up a fairy tale? Many things are unrealistic but the most unflattering aspect of these tales is how women are depicted in them. Fairy tales give an unrealistic view to how women should look and behave in real life.
Society is immersed in popular culture; music, television, art, film, books, fandoms, and fads surround us. Due to its constant presence in women’s lives, women are shown the ideal standard of beauty through multiple outlets of popular culture. This constant bombardment goes into their subconscious and sticks with them in their everyday lives. These standards of beauty pop up in every situation and cause women to compare themselves to other women. One example of popular culture that affects young girls as they are growing up and sticks with them into younger adulthood is the impressionability of Disney’s princesses. As Lamb and Brown put it, “Disney girls are women with Barbie doll bodies” (Hobbs & Rice, 336). Disney places these unrealistic standards of girlhood onto growing girls and show them how girls “should” act and look in order to be considered pretty, get a husband, and live a happy life. Through their research they found that “Disney girls are incomplete without a man, are innocent, have lovely voices, and can’t resist a mirror” (336-337). What Disney also does is deem what characteristics are “ugly,” “evil,” and “abnormal.” These “unattractive” Disney characters are found to be vengeful and cruel, while “female power is itself evil” (337). Disney teaches young girls that if you are “unattractive” or powerful, you will meet your demise, whereas if you are “pretty” or submissive, you will be awarded a handsome man. This type of imaging in popular culture perpetuates the unrealistic beauty standard for women and encourages them to pursue disorder eating in order to fit into society and feel attractive for

Many of Disney’s original movies such as snow white, sleeping beauty, and Cinderella all present perfect examples of a strong issue that has been the controversy of the 21st century. These movies bring on an obvious trend that even small children could point out. The beautiful girl is stuck in some kind of sad imprisonment(either brought upon by herself or by others) and a handsome prince sweeps her off her feet and saves the day. Which, raises an important question as to why some women wait for their prince charming to come rescue them, instead of putting on their metaphorical belt and boots and clearing their own path to the future they desire. Over the years, fairytales have been distorted in order to make them more family friendly. Once these changes occur, the moral and purpose of the stories begin to disappear. The tales featured in the many Disney movies - beloved by so many - have much more malignant and meaningful origins that often served to scare children into obeying their parents or learning valuable life lessons.
To begin with, romantic movies mold expectations of what love is really like. They portray that love is the only thing that matters. In the past, love was secondary. Relationships were arranged by parents because they wanted their children to join lands or kingdoms, and whether or not the couple actually loved each other was irrelevant. Today, parents have almost no say in who their children fall in love with. Romance movies over-emphasize love when it comes to “falling in love at first sight” and the idea that “true love conquers all”. I’m sure that almost everyone knows that real-life love doesn’t work like this, but that doesn’t mean that those illustrations of love that movies characterize doesn’t affect viewers’ hope for romance and true love in their own life.
