Why to pick a Major in Accounting The reason I decided to pursue a career in accounting is because I have always been interested in the business world and accounting is considered a basic tool of business. I have worked for small and large business firms; also in private and public sectors which helped me develop a strong linking with the industry as a whole and solidified my interest in accounting.
Pursuing the degree in accounting would definitely open up the doors for me. It can prepare me for advancement and give me the foundations to become a CPA, to pursue a career in finance or corporate management, to work in government, or become an entrepreneur. Most accountants and auditors work full time. Longer hours are typical at certain times of the year, such as at the end of the budget year or during tax season.
Finally Looking back since I returned to school maintaining a 3.8 GPA, I felt that my first semester in the accounting program has been difficult and grades have been hard to attain, but I realized that my work experience has been helpful as it allows me to return to school with organizational skills and the intense desire not to give up despite the difficulties and perform well as I continue the journey to my degree. I hope that I can get practical experience in the field though part time internships and volunteer as well.
I feel that this major is of a great interest to me because its diversity. Both career paths have advantages and disadvantages. Public accountants have greater variety of exposure in working with different clients and industries; also, advancement opportunities may become sooner. On the other hand, private accountants can reach management levels without a CPA license and advancement opportunities may not come as quickly. This overview presented me a better idea of where a degree in accounting could take me. Knowing that I have a variety of opportunities and room for growth give me the confidence I need to Pursuing the degree would definitely open up the doors for me. I had a different pursuit in careers in becoming an Accountant. The reason I wanted to pursue being an Accountant was for my love for math. Math was always my favorite subject, and I was excellent in it. Some teachers would even ask me to help others in the class that was struggling. At first, I did not take Accounting serious because I was still focused on wanting to play baseball. My goal of becoming an Accountant started because I not only stopped playing baseball, but ended my baseball career mentally in order to focus on my education. I had to make a choice, whether go to college only focusing on baseball and worry about student loans or go to a community college for free and focus on my education. I could see baseball would only get me so far, compared to receiving a higher education. My mom and grandparents helped make that decision, so I did not want to let them down by going after an unrealistic dream. In this competitive business world, understanding what is truly valuable to me is a major step towards achieving my goal. My strengths are my languages, technology skills, education, work ethic and the ability to follow directions. My weaknesses are communication skill, lack of U.S culture and working experience. The job environment for an accountant would be mostly done in a typical office setting (“Accountants and Auditors”). Some people may be able to work from their homes, or if the business has more than one facility they might have to travel to the different facilities (“Accountants and Auditors”). The typical hours for an accountant depend on what type of accounting they do. The normal hours for a week are between 40-50 hours, but a tax & financial and auditors may put in 70 hours in a week (“Welcome to Careers in Accounting”). Individuals would also be working as a team with others on an important account or on financial statements (“Welcome to Careers in Accounting”).
Every day, many people question my passion for pursuing accounting as a profession and the first answer I think of is that I am good with numbers. However, advancing in the field has made me realize that my passion is not only based on figures. Growing up as a kid, I was privileged to have a piggy account where I would save as little as fifty cents per week. Since my parents rewarded me in monetary value as a positive reinforcement in cases of good behaviour, I was motivated to maintain good manners so long as my savings increased. As time went by, I realized I had saved way “too much” money for a little child. The challenge came in the management of the funds because I was focused on spending more on pleasurable activities. However, the guidance of my parents enabled me to prioritize on the more important things and save more. I took interest in managing may own account as a child and even pursued accounting courses in high school. The interest grew deeper because I gained more insight on the facts about accounting and the career. Also, I believed that it is career that one would be self-employed thereby avoiding the dilemmas of lacking jobs after graduating. For instance, one would easily start their own business and manage their finances comfortably.
My first goal is to continue my education by earning a Master’s degree in Accounting right after completing my bachelor’s degree. The MSU’s Accounting program attracts me for both its reputation and its career opportunities available for international students. It is my responsibility as a future accountant to be really familiar and proficient at the tools accountants use regularly. Achieving my master’s degree will also help me achieving my second goal of becoming a CPA by meeting the requirement of curriculum. Thus, I am professionally and academically motivated to earn a Master’s degree of Accounting at the Broad Business College.

My interest in Accounting and Finance stems from wanting to understand how governments and businesses make their vital decisions to be profitable. Studying this degree, will allow me to gain an understanding of financial accounting, management accounting and taxation providing me with skills to analyse data and develop my decision making.
