“Fine, then I’m not gonna go to college”
The room fell dead silent.
Normally an obedient child, even I was surprised at the threat that came out of my mouth. However, I had to stoop extremely low to prevent them from taking basketball away from me. It was just a game to them, but it held a much deeper value to me. Basketball served not only as a means of enjoyment but a place for escape. I glanced at my father, who was so angry there was a red vein popping out of his forehead and then glanced at my mother who was on the verge of tears. Not realizing that I would never carry through with this threat, they reluctantly allowed me to continue to play basketball. Raised in Wuhan, China, my parents grew up being taught that ghitting the books was the only way to better oneself. Because of this, they were particularly averse to

Three years of varsity basketball has taught me the qualities it takes to succeed. As the eldest of four boys, I was held to a higher standard and expected to lead. My brothers looked at me for guidance and instruction. Basketball was what truly helped me learn to step up and take responsibility. Being the point guard, it was my responsibility to manage the players both on the court and off the court. On the court, I had to make sure all the players knew the plays and calm their nerves in tense situations while off the court I would try to help them maintain their grades so that they could meet the standards to participate. Basketball has further provided me with the opportunity to work with younger children through Buddy Ball, a program that pairs teens up with those that have learning disabilities to play sports and develop social skills. These experiences provided me with leadership skills which translated to my life at home whether it's helping my brothers with a difficult homework problem, keeping them out of trouble, or simply leading by
I have been a four year letter-winner in volleyball and basketball. Athletics have been a crucial part of developing my character and work ethic. In sports, you must work together with your team to reach your goals. Trust and communication skills are vital and are tested every day. The failure and setbacks I have faced through sports have helped me to believe in myself and have the self-confidence that it takes to be successful in athletics and in life. As a senior captain of the volleyball and basketball teams, my leadership has improved tremendously as high school has progressed. Being a leader holds me accountable and I aim to be a role model for younger teammates on the court, in the classroom, and in the community.
My dad used to say, " be part of something that's bigger than yourself". He always uses to force be to play sports. I chose to play basketball after seeing the all start game of 2009. Ever since I wanted to jump, shoot and Run back and forth. My dad thought it'll help be grow taller, which wasn't the case. Basket ball is more about communication but that's not true. It is about hard work, percesion, trust, being punctual and most importantly dedication. Through ethos, logos and pathos I will elaborate how being on the team change my
Starting my freshman year at County High School, I played basketball and loved every minute of it. I wouldn’t be conceited enough to say I was good, but God did bless me with the talent to play. My life revolved around the sport of basketball; some would say I slept, ate, and breathed every part of it. I spent all my time training and practicing to make myself a more dedicated athlete. This dedication not only helped me as a player, but also molded me into the person I am today. It somehow helped to prepare me for what defeat I would face with back surgery in the future.
Basketball is a great sport for people that like to run because basketball involves running up and down the court.. Some people like basketball because they like the idea of the sport or the competition. Most people have something specific that they like about basketball. For instance: Some people like free throws better than threes. Everyone has a different opinion about the game or perspective of the game that they like or dislike about it.
Each game, my passion grew. Each team, new memories and lifelong friends were made. Sports sometimes make me feel disappointment and at loss; but it taught me to be resilient to a lot of things, like how to thrive under pressure and come out on top. Being the team captain of my high school’s football and lacrosse team showed me how having a big responsibility to bring a group together to work as one is compared to many situations in life. Currently playing varsity football, varsity lacrosse, and track I take great pride in the activities I do. Staying on top of my academics, being duel enrolled at Indian River State College, working three nights a week, and two different sport practices after school each day shaped my character to having a hard work
“The odds of a high school basketball player making it to the “next level” to play college basketball (DI, II, or III) is slim. In fact, only 3.4% of high school players go on to play college basketball. Taking it even further, only 1.2% of college basketball players go on to get drafted in the NBA” (Winters, 2016). There are two types of players in the game. There are the kids who play basketball because they are athletic, and all they are seeking to gain is the recognition and awards. They want to be known. Those players are self-centered, they do not play for the team, and generally don’t play because they love the game. These are the types of players who don’t usually go on to play at the next level. On the other hand, there are the players that absolutely dedicate their life to the game of basketball just because they love the game. That is what coaches are looking for in a player, and that is the kind of player I am striving to be.
I remember the first time I played basketball when I was eleven years old. Seventh grade was an epiphany to me, I started trying different instruments, joined different clubs, and learned a bunch of other things about myself in the process. Uneducated, I didn’t know a single thing about what I was doing and ended up running around the court equivalent to a lost puppy. But as the season went on, I ended up having a few of the utmost exciting times of my life, and ended up trying out for the team again in eighth grade. Losing just about every game didn’t matter to us, us girls just kept laughing, smiling, and playing the whole time, despite the score on the board.
In ten years I would like to be a basketball player when I grow up. The reason why I want to be a basketball player. Is cause it is the best thing to do to me. The average basketball player get 5 million dollars a year. Being a basketball player is really fun.
It is easy to pick a favorite player coming from College and going to the NBA. Staying with that one player throughout their whole career is admiring and respect for that individual person. Since I started watching basketball, Michael Jeffery Jordan was my all-time favorite player. Every time I watch, his old basketball videos made me go harder in practice every day. Michael Jordan made me believe I could be somebody in the basketball world. His height wasn’t the tallest or strongest on the court but he had a lot of skills and heart. His basketball IQ and skills made me “Want to be Like Mike”. As I studied all his moves and watched him drop amazing numbers on different NBA teams; However, those were not the only thing that made me love Michael
Since I was a kid it was always my dream to play in an arena filled with tens of thousands of people. NBA arenas can hold anywhere from 17,000 to 22,000 screaming fans and to me nothing can compare to that. I have been inside an arena and the excitement and pressure you can feel is unreal. Millions of others share and have shared this dream with me. I feel that professional basketball has pushed kids to be better in school and be better people because to be able to play you have to be eligible. High school sports and the NCAA have done a great job on ensuring that athletes are well educated before they leave to go pro. If you don’t go to college it is very tough to go pro unless you are a for sure first round pick. These select few could end up playing overseas for a year and make some money instead of having to go to college
Growing up, I always settled for complacency and never tried to be successful in different facets of life. Although, getting cut from the team revealed to me that basketball wasn't the only way for me to be successful. Success in one area doesn’t define one’s worth or potential in other areas of life. As aforementioned, I wasn’t going to let my unsuccessful basketball career define who I am. So, I focused on having success as a student and in extracurricular activities like volunteering, but I also found success in little things.
Growing up as a Muslim black girl navigating the difficulties of identity in a diverse world, basketball has been the unexpected spark in my life. In a society often marked by misunderstandings and barriers, basketball became the only sport that really helped me through everything and helped me view the world differently. High school came around and freshman year I told myself why not try out for the school basketball team. I was excited and nervous at the same time, so I made my decision and tried out for the school basketball team. I was afraid I would be rejected or treated differently because of my identity, even though I was really excited to show off my skills and prove my value on the court.
Many people around the world enjoy different things. It could range from sports, videogames, art, or reading. Sports are one thing that people may enjoy, whether they play them, or watch them. There are a variety of different sports in the world, with all of them being different. Most people like a sport because it challenges them, it's exciting to watch, and because it's fun to play.
Basketball is one of the interesting sports I have always wanted to engage myself; even as a little child. It was a dream come true when I started playing basketball in my high school. Moreover, I was very good in it, and I became the team leader. Of course, I enjoyed every bite of the time I spent playing basketball.
Basketball is my life and the focus of my dreams. Ever since my father introduced me to the sport, I have been passionate about it.
