Women have faced gender wage discrimination for decades. The gender pay gap is the difference between what a male and a female earns. It happens when a man and a woman standing next to each other doing the same job for the same number of hours get paid different salaries. On average, full-time working- women earn just “77 cents for every dollar a man earn.” When you compare a woman and a man doing the same job, “the pay gap narrows to 81 percent (81%)” (Rosin). Fifty-one years ago, in order to stop the gender gap discrimination, Congress enacted the Equal Pay Act of 1963. The act states that all women should receive “equal pay for equal work”. Unfortunately, even in 2014 the gender pay gap persists and even at the highest echelons of the corporate; therefore, the equal pay act is a failure.
The Equal Pay Act (part of the Fair Labor Standards Act), forbids employers to compensate women differently for jobs that are “substantially equal”, that is, almost identical. Traditionally, women have worked in different occupations than men; these occupations tend to be substantially different, pay less and confer less authority.
Lilly Ledbetter once said, “We sought justice because equal pay for equal work is an American value. That fight took me ten years. it took me all the way to the Supreme Court. And, in a 5-4 decision, they stood on the side of those who shortchanged my pay, my overtime, and my retirement just because I am a woman.” The gender pay gap is a problem that many women, like Lilly Ledbetter, face everyday because it has many different causes, and it has a large impact on the economy in the United States.
A huge problem in the working world is the issue of equal pay between men and women in the workplace. Once stance taken is that women are specifically targeted and that they are payed less than the average income of a man who has the same education and who works in the same profession while the other stance states that men and women are paid as close to equal as possible considering the careers taken. Do women deserve equal Prize Money and why? It is outrageous that today women are getting paid 77 cents to a men’s dollar for doing the same job every day and it’s disappointing that women are getting less prize money for winning the same championship sports etc, tennis, football and other sports because of the definition of a women’s physique. Its understandable that a women’s physique may show less definition, but this does not mean that their time in the playing field and prize money should be cut down a few cents less, it’s sexist and stereotypical that this is happening in todays society. Men get paid more than women even if they have the exact same job; however, if both do the job great and have the same education, then they should get paid the same. If someone is a woman, would she want to get paid less than a man, even though she does the exact same job and has the same education? Why Are Men Payed More Than Women? April 4, 2017 was this year’s Equal Pay Day, the day that symbolizes how far into the next year it takes for women to earn the same as men from the year before. It has been almost five decades since John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act in 1963 saying it was illegal for establishments to pay employees different wages for the same job based on their gender, race, or age. The wage gap still exists today because of gender inequality, the motherhood penalty, and each state’s difference in percentage of the pay gap.
According to recent news reports, women earn about 70-80 cents for every dollar a man makes. Even when a man and a woman work in the exact same fields with identical job titles, women are still paid less. Additionally, women are often denied opportunities for advancement simply because of their gender. Some employers are still stuck in the outdated beliefs that women are inferior to men and believe that their pay should mirror that. Others justify paying women less by saying that women will go on maternity leave or quit all together when they get pregnant, making them ‘less reliable’ than men.
One argument concludes that while there may be unequal pay in a said work place, the equal pay has nothing to do with gender. Kate O’Beirne, an author who addresses the feminist movement, says in her novel, “The claim that women face widespread wage discrimination is myth.” Instead, she argues that the idea is simply a tool used to boost the movement for feminists. She argues that since the Equal Pay Act of 1963, it is illegal for any businesses to not equally pay their women workers to their men workers if they are doing the same work. While this might be a valid point, it does not mean that businesses will not break the law to take the cheaper route. It was found in 2014 that women that were working full time were paid 79 percent of what men earned. The gender gap has progressed since the 1970s but has since slowed down. Progression does not mean resolution; the gap has not completely closed.
