Do Women Deserve Equal pay or Prize Money? Issue Analysis Introduction Do women deserve equal Prize Money and why? It is outrageous that today women are getting paid 77 cents to a men’s dollar for doing the same job every day and it’s disappointing that women are getting less prize money for winning the same championship sports etc, tennis, football and other sports because of the definition of a women’s physique. Its understandable that a women’s physique may show less definition, but this does not mean that their time in the playing field and prize money should be cut down a few cents less, it’s sexist and stereotypical that this is happening in todays society. Women do the same job and play the same sports to men and they deserve the right to have equal prize money. 3 Sports earning the biggest Pay gapes in today’s society …show more content…
Two of the best Tennis players today, Serena Williams and Roger Federa have a completely different pay gap and yet they play the same sport and play the same number of sets and matches. Serena’s pay is $495,000 and Rodgers pay are almost double Serena’s pay of $731,000. Men and Women play the same Tennis all around the world and women are paid significantly less than males in the sport of Tennis. In Basketball the pay gap between men and women is ridiculous, the women playing in the WNBA are paid $38,000 and the Men playing in the NBA get paid $525,000, yes women only play a season of 34 games and the Men play an 82-game long season but its sill outrageous that women are paid one fifth of the lowest paid player in the NBA. Two years ago, 52 players in the NBA were paid more than the women in the WNBA. Men and Women both play the same basketball game for four 10-minute quarters and they should deserve equal
The NBA generates far more revenue than the WNBA; as such, it's no surprise that the former's players are paid a higher salary. It's tempting to assume that when we account for the revenue disparity between the NBA and WNBA, the gender wage gap disappears. Unfortunately, that seems to run counter to the data. Even when we consider differences in revenue, there remains a significant gap between the wages paid to WNBA players and their NBA counterparts.
Women have progressed from house wives to business women over the past hundred years. In 1948, 28.6% of the people in the work force were women. In 2015, this percentage has increased to 46.8% (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015). Progression is visible and very possible, but it seems that our chances for equal pay are very improbable. From a person perspective, I had the opportunity to focus on basketball, let my efforts and love for the sport pay for college, and continue on playing in the WNBA. With in-depth research, I quickly reconsidered. Phoenix Mercury’s Diana Taurasi made a maximum salary of $107,800 one season after winning the championship. The NBA team, Phoenix Suns, picked up Dionte Christmas who only played for 198 minutes during the whole season and he obtained the minimum payment of $490,800 just for being a bench warmer (Berri, 2015). It is bad enough that he made $300,000 more than Taurasi, but it is more inconceivable that an NBA starter will receive $14.7 million a
There is a pay gap between men and women in the U.S. The pay gap affects women of all educations levels, and backgrounds. But white men are the largest demographic in labor forces so they possibly favor each other as opposed to women. The graph didn’t specify the type of jobs, or whether they were working parts time or fulltime. But in 2016, women working full time in the U.S. were paid 80% of what men were getting paid. There are some occupations that have not reached the equity but some have like retail, banking and real
According to the Women 's Sports Foundation, they claim that paying men more for the same sport gives women in the sport less incentive to push themselves and discourages future female participation in the sport. Which is true, why would women want to play the same sport as men and get paid less money. A good example where women get paid much less money for the same sport is a WNBA. Women’s Sports Foundation says that players from the WNBA in the 2015 season, the minimum salary was $38,913, the maximum salary was $109,500, and the team salary cap in 2012 was $878,000. For NBA players in the 2015-2016 season, the minimum salary is $525,093, the maximum salary is $16.407 million, and the team salary cap is an all-time high of $70 million. David Berri’s article on, “Basketball’s gender wage is even worse than you think,” he talks about that in 2013-14, the Phoenix Suns employed Dionte Christmas for 198 minutes. For those minutes–the only minutes Christmas has ever played in the National Basketball Association–he was paid the league minimum of $490,180. However, Diana Taurasi made the All-Women 's National Basketball Association First Team in 2014 and helped the Phoenix Mercury win the league 's championship. That season, she was paid the WNBA maximum salary of $107,500. This is huge difference between the two
Traditionally men have dominated the world of sports however in recent year’s women’s sports have become popular and with their new found popularity, women’s sports have evolved into marketable leagues of their own. Although women’s sports took a huge leap forward, women players still don’t receive the same financial compensation for playing the same sports in the same arenas as their male counterparts. In Purse Snatching by Donna Lopiano, she points out sexism may have a huge effect on this financial discrepancy between women and men athletes. Analyzing sports economics may point to a different reason why women are receiving such a compensation disparity.
The pay gap between the NBA and WNBA argument needs to stop because WNBA players already have higher pay raise percentages. People argue that the WNBA players need higher pay because the NBA players have way higher pay, but they have
A Woman may work in the same career as a man and work equal time but in the end the woman is still getting paid less. The statistics are even worse for women of color. Women of color are paid 55-64 cents compared to every dollar earned by a man. According
Messner, showed that women’s sports took up only 6.3% of airtime while men’s took up 91.4 %.(1989,2004,p.4). And the hit show Sportscenter was showing men more than women at an astounding ratio of 20:1 (Messner, 1989, 2004, p.4). Also the coverage and the after game interviews are far less than men. They don’t get enough exposure showcase the talent and entertainment of a women’s game. If a man is highly masculine and highly skilled at what he is doing, he gains that respect and popularity so easily without really doing a thing. For men this brings money, merchandise, media coverage, and fans. More fans means more and more money. Which conclusively brings more success to the franchise, and that’s one example why male professional sports overpower female. Women have an extreme disadvantage when it comes to this because they are not popular in means of sporting events, they don’t have as many fans, don’t have a lot of people to buy the merchandise, and they don’t have the money to treat you with a higher salary. You don’t see contracts in the WNBA like you do in the NBA, for example the salary cap for each team in the WNBA is $878,000, while the NBA is $58 million. (Garland, 2012). That is a huge difference for playing the same sport in the same country. This also goes hand in hand with endorsements. Men make millions and millions extra from endorsements which women don’t usually get. For example, LeBron James at 18 years old signed a deal with NIKE for $90,000,000 just because he was good at basketball, Nike is lucky LeBron wasn’t a bust, but you would never see a company risk that type of money with a female athlete that young. (USAToday.com,
Women and men get the same amount of education; so why are men getting payed more than women? Jeanne Sahadi stated on CNN Money that, “In 2014, the median income for men who worked full-time was $50,383. For women, it was $39,621.” Women always being looked as the minority as mentioned in the essay by Heiman and Bookspan. Women work just as hard as men to get the same level education to obtain the same job; if not harder because there are some women that are single moms taking care their child without any help from the father. This is really unfair towards women not getting equal pay as men and sexism somehow needs to be demolished from
Women are capable of doing the same jobs that men do. Many women do work in higher positioned jobs that are seen more as jobs for men, but just because they’re higher up doesn’t mean they get paid the same as the men doing their exact job. “High-achieving women are paid less than men even when they have similar levels of experience and are in the same fields,” (Bloomberg Businessweek). This means that women who have been doing the same job for the same amount of time as a man, earn less than him. Even a woman who was completely
“A woman is human. She is not better, wiser, stronger, more intelligent, more creative, or more responsible than a man. Likewise, she is never less. Equality is a given. A woman is human,” Vera Nazarian. Unfortunately now in the United States, women are being treated less than their male counterparts, especially when it comes to professional athletics. In an article entitled, Taking a Closer Look at the Gender Pay Gap in Sports, written by John Walters on newsweek.com, he exclaims, “Each player on the USWNT earns $99,000 per year provided the team wins 20 “friendlies” (exhibition matches), the minimum number of matches they would play. By contrast, each men’s player would earn $263,320 for the same feat and would still earn $100,000 if the team lost all 20 games.” Not only does this topic relate to the difference in pay for women and men in soccer but it also relates to all of the other sports like, basketball, tennis and the many other were males participate too in separate organizations. The topic on whether female athletes should be paid the same as their male counterparts, is a massive debate with two opposing sides. On one side of the debate, people believe male driven associations produce more revenue than female driven associations, the competition in male sports is more intense, and more fans want to see thunderous dunks and the athletic ability of males over the lesser abilities of what females can do. On the contrary, female athletics aren 't given the same recognition or praise, females go through the same types of workouts males go through and they participate in the same types of events, and females don 't have the same abilities as males due to the way they ar...
Throughout Canadian history, discrimination in all forms has been a constant battle; whether its race, gender, religion, beliefs, appearance or anything else that makes one person different from another. One significant inequity problem the world’s population is combatting occurs during employment. Women, who are equally trained, educated, and equipped with the same skill, as men are not getting equal, pay. This form of injustice dates back for centuries and derives from the common belief that men supply for women and women stay at home with the children, thus it is assumed that men therefore are more efficient in their career. This is also
There are many problems why men and women are not equally paid the same. One of them is the President's perception of economic inequality in labor markets. Having the same education does not matter when it comes for men and women to be equally paid. "Obama states that a woman earns less than a man even when she's in the same profession and has the same education" (Epstein). This happens because men are still thought to be the head of the house and the one that has all the power in many cases. Obama's double use of the word "same" overlooks the wide varieties inside any given occupation classification, and similarly wide varieties in the instruction that men and women convey to their work both inside and across the two genders (Epstein).Using
From the beginning of history and to this day women still get paid less than the average man, but why? Whoever said that women are incapable of good work performance? Whoever said that women do not have the same responsibilities to maintain? What really makes a women’s work inferior to men? The answer is nothing. Today, women are depended on just as much as men, and are capable of performing at their level. However, a full-time working woman earns only seventy-seven cents for every dollar a man makes. These days women make up half the workplace in our society; they work just as hard and for the same reasons. Women deserve to be paid at an equal rate as men because they are relied on to uphold the same responsibilities and are just as qualified to perform at a man’s level.
The issue is that male athletes are getting paid a higher amount of money than female athletes. Female sport has developed significantly for 50 years. Women now play a wider range of sports and have access to playing at a professional level. Even though the sporting world is still hugely male dominated. Women and men rarely play each other, and women are paid less when compared to men who play the same form of professional sport.
