I. INTRODUCTION
Everybody that is in business is there to make a profit (some firms are just tax shelters) and there are only so many products and services available. What sets the competition apart is how they execute their business practices. This is where a mission statement becomes the “blueprint” for doing business. “The mission statement needs to be longer than a phrase or sentence, but not a 2-page document” (David, 2003). This document not only points the managers in the right direction, it also gives the employee a sense of why they are working for this company. In addition, the mission statement not only gives purpose and direction, it should also give motivation and pride not only to the employees of the company but also their customers. The bottom line in any business is to make a profit and in order to do this; the business must find a way for their customers to spend money in their firm. Whole Foods Market ® incorporates many of the guide lines discussed in the readings; however, their mission statement exceeds the two page recommended length.
II. BODY OF WORK
(a) The importance of a mission statement. Whole Foods Market ® follows the basic guidelines for a mission statement with the most important aspect, motivation. This motivation was not only just for the customers to shop with them but also for their employees. “Business Week reports that firms with well-crafted mission statements have a 30% higher return on certain financial measures than firms that lack such documents” (David, 2003). In twenty-five years, Whole Foods Market ® was able to extend their business concept to “157 stores in 28 states” to include “the District of Columbia, Canada, and Great Britain” (WFM, 2004). ...way of life. Whole Foods Market ® has an intrinsic value; they are trying to sell a better, healthier life style that relates to becoming a better member of society. Whole Foods Market’s ® mission statement is a little long; however, it is motivational to both the customers as well as the employees.

The mission statement of an organization should clearly communicate the purpose and values of the organization. Whole Foods Market varies their products based on location, focusing on local products and any unique products to promote a neighborhood market feel for their customers. The company strategically chooses its locations, placing them in educated areas, and then focuses on products to sustain a competitive advantage.
It places more value on how many stores they have opened. The last two sentences of the first section say the founder is responsible for many grocery innovations. Perhaps in that time period of the 1930’s, selling produce by the pound and putting nutrition labels on food (Safeway, n.d.) was innovative. There are not any current examples showing new innovation as the mission statement claims should be ongoing.
A mission statement is important because it creates the general big picture of the company and every employee can relate to it no matter what their job within the company is. With a list of values and norms the Ivanovics create a level of expectation when it comes to attitude and behavior. If the owners follow the same values and norms as the employees, the employees will feel like they are a meaningful part of the business. This will allow the employees to feel more committed to their jobs.
As a mother and wife, I'm always looking to save time and money. I can sometimes achieve that by choosing to shop at our local Dollar General. Because I am a frequent customer of their company, I was interested in learning what their mission statement contained and whether or not they did a good job relaying that message in their “About Me” section of the company website. An article discussing the importance of a mission statement states that a mission statements’ job is to outline the organization’s unique purpose and establish the basis of its values and traits, as well as describe the attitude that is to be expected of those a part of the organization. Furthermore, this philosophical foundation sets the “tone” for physical actions, meaning that the content of the mission statement can determine the behavior of personnel (Hitt & Ireland, 1992).
The mission statement must be clearly defined to determine the basic goals and philosophies that will shape the Food Bank’s strategic position. The purpose that identifies the scope of its operations in product and market terms and sets it apart from other firms in the same industry is the company’s mission (Pearce & Robinson, 2004). The statement of the Food Bank’s intent encompasses the firm’s strategic decision makers, the image they want to project, the firm’s self concept, the principle product or service areas, and customer needs the firm will strive to satisfy (Pearce & Robinson, 2004).
Whole Foods has several FaceBook pages depending on the store however they do have a corporate page where they clearly state their cores values. These mainly encompass a well being for the community while spreading the knowledge of healthy living as well as their commitment to high quality and organic foods. They have over 1 million likes and share content from their Pinterest, Twitter, and Instagram on FaceBook. The FaceBook content mostly has recipes and pictures that buying a certain product will help fund a good cause. Whole Foods has several CSR initiatives to fight poverty inside and outside the US while also giving micro loans to farmers in need. I viewed several other local FaceBook pages of theirs to get a feel for the overall message. The local pages include specials, cooking classes, pictures, and of course they continue to be very engaging of the audience; overall the message remains consistent throughout the different pages.

Developing an organization is usually determined during the initial start up and can be changed due to changing environment demands. Whole Foods Market is a dynamic leader in the quality food business. We are a mission-driven company that aims to set the standards of excellence for food retailers. We are building a business in which high standards permeate all aspects of our company. Quality is a state of mind at Whole Foods Market. (Whole Foods, N.d.) Before getting to the end of the mission statement it is clear that Whole Foods is focused on quality. From there Whole Foods builds on its mission statement with its vision and values aligning some of its components such as organizational culture.

The mission statement for Harley Davidson is shorter than one might expect based on the components that are contained within an ideal mission statement. The breakdown of the eight characteristics of an ideal mission statement is fairly comprehensive despite the brevity of the statement. Although as will be discussed there is room for improvement in addressing all the components of an ideal mission statement. Aguinis (2013) points out that at times vision and mission statements can blend together; this is evidently the case with Harley Davidson as well as will be discussed.
Mission Statement: As an educator I will provide for students the opportunity to make a positive difference in their lives to help them accomplish unexpected goals. I will enhance learning to support my students in achieving their highest potential by integrating technology into the curriculum. I will integrate conceptual technology learning techniques that will implement concrete knowledge of technology that will emphasize mastery of understanding. Through committed support from educators, faculty, staff, parents, and the community, I will advance learning to support my students. This will allow students to become confident, creative, motivated, technology-ready students. I will provide leadership to achieve these standards of excellence each student deserves for a technology driven society.
